Blair Mayne died in a car accident at the age of 40, two years before I was born. But in 1970, my dad took me with him to visit one of his old friends from their Queen's University days - he was Dougie Mayne, one of Blair's brothers. My dad told me of this famous war hero & I've been fascinated with the story ever since.
RIP to all of them, RIP to the Greek Sacred Company who fought together with SAS warriors under the command of Colonel Tsigantes a Greek officer and a French legioner too.
Just been reading about his North African service a remarkable man, loyal to his friends and fellow soldiers brave beyond words , yet well read and very reserved away from front line.Wrote personally to all the families of the troops who died.
@@samca4472 In my country, a family member or close acquaintance must submit a request to the Ministry of Defence. I know, for example, that Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands made a case for posthumously awarding the highest military decoration (Willemsorde 1st class) to Polish general Sosaboski (Market garden) in 1999, which he then succeeded.
This man deserved to have been awarded the VICTORIA CROSS.......THOSE RANKS ABOVE HIM SHOULD HAVE PERSEVERED WITH THIS GALLANT AWARD.......SHAME ON THEM.......HE WAS THE BRAVEST OF MEN AND DEMONSTRATED THIS BY HIS ACTIONS AND LEADERSHIP
Blaire never got the VC simply because he was Irish I’d imagine, if anyone ever deserved it was this man, a hero for all eternity, a shame he died so young
I enjoyed 'SAS Rogue Heroes' and Jack O'Connell is a fantastic actor. I just wish they had cast someone who better reflected the physical presence of the legendary Paddy Mayne.
@@amulyamishra5745not only that: he's a lot closer heightwise to the 6'3 of real Mayne, O'Connell is like 5'8. HE would have had to grow muscles though
Watched the series last night, amazing brave men, all of them were hero's, we have so much to thank them for, it really touched me how lucky we all are to have men of this calibre keeping us all safe, thank you all past and present for your service to us ♥
Absolute legend. My grandfather was in the allied 1st airborne and an Irishman from Limerick. Never talked about his time but had the short forces knives etc on his wall.Have a photo of him at Suez in the 40's. Paddy M. was a true leader of men and highly regarded. Let's ensure his story and that of the special forces is told correctly and remembered.
The description ’brave’ and ‘’heroic’ can be bandied about too easily. Mayne defined that description and a posthumous VC would a fitting tribute to the great man
We all owe these warriors a great debt of honour, the complete disregard for their own safety in the pursuit of the objective and the irrepressible defence of the men under their charge, Paddy thoroughly deserves a posthumous VC, this weekend would be a deserving time for the Crown to instruct the M.o.D. to right a unforgivable wrong.
I suspect his combativeness and natural belligerence, towards enemies and his own side, was because he was what we would now call bipolar. He didn't feel fear or respect for authority in the same way that most people do. An ideal quality for a soldier though, and a rugby player.
Watching the program about the sas that's on TV at the moment. If anyone has ever seen Dick Strawbridge on escape to the chateau. Then that is closer to the accent, that the program makers should have given their character, instead of that Belfast accent.
Yes a great hero of the war but like another great hero Alan Turing, a tortured gay man who, unlike Turing who committed suicide, Paddy turned to alcoholism and self destructed. The journalist Mary Kenny documents how Paddy frequented gay bars in Dublin during the 50s.
I think he was Gay at a time when it was not acceptable ? I have met Gay men who hide there true feelings and give themselves a tough time They present a real Macho person to protect there real personality He was bravest of the brave but i think inside there was a gay guy fighting the biggest battle with themselves I hope he is at rest now
True hero. Brave and totally courageous. Should have been awarded the VC even now posthumously.

Rest Easy Paddy.
Lest We Forget.

Paddy Mayne should be given the Victoria Cross posthumously! That's the least the Department of Defense can do.
Ministry of Defence you mean
@@allenomalley4014 Yes, indeed Allen.

Just came across you Paddy.
Wow what a man.
Full respect you deserve so much more .xxxx

A real warhero for sure!
His immediate superior spent a lot of the war in Colditz, so difficult.
For me, you made a valid comment but the use of capitals doesn’t enhance but rather detract from the value of your words
To be honest I doubt if Paddy gave a flying fxxk!
Been there several times the statue of Paddy outside the old town Hall of Newtownards.🇬🇧🏴🇬🇧

And his accent was bloody awful too.
Tom Hiddleston looks like him... don't you think?

@@amulyamishra5745TOM Hardy. He sure has that rugged physique.
I highly recommend reading the book by Hamish Ross for more about his legendary rugby and military career.
This guy was giant among men greater than any medal you can pin on someone's chest.
I did read something that 2005 the subject of Blair Maines "Missing " VC was discussed again in the UK . What happened ? Its long overdue !

If he had been English or American Holywood would have made a film about him! Legend!!
@Delta 1 Ireland has more Victoria Crosses on a per capita basis than any other country
Just watched season one of SAS Rogue Heroes, what an incredible story about heroic and half crazed men.
A fine example of the Ulster fighting spirit! A great leader of men and never asked his men to do anything he would not do himself! A hero!🇬🇧
Paddy Mayne is still a hero of mine....and will continue to be when, even when in time, I meet with him!
I salute you Pilgrim.
Paddy will welcome your presence bro
The description ’brave’ and ‘’heroic’ can be bandied about too easily. Mayne defined that description and a posthumous VC would a fitting tribute to the great man
Paddy mayne my complete hero
Very interesting and strong persons...
Great respect for memory, honor and dignity 🕊️
Paddy mayne a giant among men his glory lives on for eternity 🙏
Paddy Blair Mayne was a warrior and one of the originals and he was a true warrior
Seemed like a troubled man. Hope he found peace.
He 100 percent deserves the vc
Great man , a true warrior
Paddy mayne should have the VC for Valor several times over
Hero...........
Agreed he should have been awarded the Victoria cross

His name was Blur and he played for the Liaans...got it.

Ballicks.
Lol
I agree totally
A real hero
👍🏴
Such a shame he was depicted as a mindless thug in the TV series. Courage, fearlessness, maybe recklessness (required), but not a lout.
They left out the bit where he murdered the unarmed German pilots in North Africa.
Goes thru the whole war and ends up dead in an auto crash
Only 40 years old maybe he should have kept his fitness up and avoided
Cars!

No evidence he was gay.
I wanted to see this series but the sound and the broken transmission were dire, TV zero, Books 10!
My missus is tougher!

He was certainly a hero and such a brave man. I have watched the series, fascinating!
