In my opinion, I don't think the elements/elementals exist only to serve humanity. The 4 elements are also within animals and plants, who are just as much of God as we are. The elements and elementals can support life but also destroy it (think of wildfires, tornadoes, earthquakes and hurricanes). They are not passive background characters as we like to think.
