I flew Qantas 737 from Brisbane to Melbourne and then connected to Vietnam Airlines A350 to Hanoi, did a tour down to Hue & Hoi An by train & Bus and then flew Vietnam Airlines A321 to Ho Chi Minh City, spent some time there before heading back home on Vietnam Airlines A350 to Melbourne, where I also spent 2 additional nights. Then I went back home to Brisbane on a Virgin Australia 737.
I've flown on Vietnam airline's premium economy on a flight from Delhi to Ho chi Minh city. The service, seat and other amenities were phenomenal. The crew was soo kind and the food was splendid. I really suggest you to try their a350 Premium Economy! It should be a pleasant surprise
Same here, last year I flew Vietnam airlines a350 premium economy. My expectations weren’t necessarily high, but the service is great, and the crew are very caring people.
*Hi, thanks for appreciating Vietnam Airlines! I am from Vietnam myself, and I also flew on this airline. I mostly like the design of the planes and the cabin at Vietnam Airlines. I flew from Hanoi to Seoul, for 6 days. Tickets from Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore are quite expensive, but I liked it. The plane I flew was an AIRBUS A350. Thanks again, and greetings from Vietnam 🇻🇳*
Vietnam Airlines is often one of the best value carriers in Asia from my experience, offering intra-Asia connecting itineraries for much less than neighbouring flag carriers. I especially love their A321 economy, the seats are plush and bar the lack of IFE, perfect for a short hop. The cabin colours are very nice too. Looking forward to flying with them again, this flight to Sydney had a surprising number of amenities. Singapore Airlines had only just brought back their signature hot towel service, so very nice to see VN was doing it almost a year ago.
I think the fact that VNA uses dual-hub model is because of the demand, not by their choices. Because the route between Hanoi and HCMC is by far the 3rd busiest flight route in the world, and Hanoi and HCMC are both important cities in Vietnam, so they chose that model.
Thank you so much Simply Aviation for yet another amazing, non-biased, pure #BrutallyHonest review of my flag carrier. I am really glad that you had a great experience flying with VN between HAN and SYD. My minor correction: VN currently operates 4 B78X (per Planespotters), the rest are yet to be delivered and still stay in USA, in VCV iirc. From my perspective, the reason why VN doesn't operate its long haul network from a large single hub like SQ, CX, TG or JL due to the geographical, economical and demand difference. SQ and CX operate from a single airport in its country, SAR respectively. Thai has a single outstandingly large financial center and JL shares the same story (Tokyo and its surrounding cities are much larger than its second metropolitan). Vietnam, on the other hand, has 2 comparably large cities: HAN and SGN, which shares many similarities in economy, population and demand, thus the long range network is somewhat equally divided. SFO, by shorter flight distance and less payload restriction, shall be a route from HAN but the demand from SGN is much much larger since Vietnamese in California are mostly originated from the South. Nonetheless, VN used to operate a divided flight network in the 2010. All Australia-bound flights originated from SGN (passengers from HAN had to fly a domestic leg in order to make the connection - and that internal flight was on the golden rush hour), whereas 2 Chinese destinations (KMG and PEK) were exclusively served from HAN. The story is different now: SGN has direct flight to PEK by VN (and also CZ), while both hubs to KMG are operated by MU. I hope this can partly explain your question. P/s: I posted this comment yesterday but was unable to see it on the video.
I took VN for the first time several years ago going from KUL to TPE via SGN. They blew me away with outstanding service on two rather short flights. Glad to see they still do it right 😊
I have flown VNA from Frankfurt to Ho Chi Minh City and i really have to admit it was my best Economy flight ever and I have tried many Asians carriers from Europe to Asia such as Thai, Singapore and Cathay Pacific. As you have mentioned many times times I felt like flying Premium Economy Class, the crew are phenomenal and very attentive, food is great (i had appetizer but I understand they removed on certain shorter flights) good legroom and fair prices. I think other SE Asian airlines decreased their service quality to be honest meanwhile VNA improved a lot and deserved to be a 5 star airlines. Even though im a big Thai Airways fan, but what VNA deliver in Economy TG is way far from that.
Living in Vietnam, I have a healthy respect for VN. Always found their long haul to be good, maybe the entertainment can be lacking for 13hrs, but overall I've never been disappointed. Only tried their 787s though, maybe their A350s are better.
This video is a real eye-opener for me. I will definately put Vietnam Airlines high on my list for flying with in the future. Their service looks superior to any of the other Asian carriers, including Singapore Airlines.
You were commenting that VN is unable to be a good connecting airline due to its dual hub network. I admire their dual hub policy, unlike QF, MH and TG which abandons the rest of the country and focuses primarily on their capital (or largest city for QF's case). VN does the best job as a national carrier: Serving the interests of their citizens traveling in and out of their country by having a dual hub. Btw they seem to be starting a small third hub at Da Nang as well. Also I would recommend you to fly Garuda Indonesia. I flew with them pre-Covid and the flight was the best short haul flight I have taken. So I am interested to know how is their service post.
They need the dual hub, due to the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh route being the backbone of their ops. Their whole widebody fleet works the route just to keep up with demand, and the long haul routes for now is just secondary. At least until both new airports in Hanoi and Long Thanh is finish then they would expand
That;s because unlike Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Philippines, Vietnam has two mega cities so that's why there's two hubs. Both Vietnamese cities are like Australia's version of Melbourne and Syndney. Other ASEAN countries has only one large city and everything is prioritized.
@@fadhilhm Goood but we're not talking about flights. We're talking about a major operational hub or headquarter. Everyone knows in ASEAN, Vietnam is the only country with two mega cities (Hanoi and Saigon Aka Ho Chi Minh City) and both are almost the same size. Other countries, it's just one huge city.
Did this flight about 2 months ago, great airline, good food and service. Unfortunately my wife's in flight entertainment screen was broken and kept glitching. Apart from that it is a great airline
Well this is a great video. That was not the average economy seat for sure. Beats my AF flight to Paris by miles. The livery is also one of the best. Hope to visit VN in the coming years.
Every single member in my family enjoys flying with Vietnam Airlines as they do pay attention to our needs in details during such long-haul flight. I love how they hand a bottle of drinking water to the passengers for a night flight like that. Top notch service!
Flew with them 2 weeks ago from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City return and I was also stunned by the quality of service. Hot towels, food was great, regular handouts of water and more. Definitely value for money, I would 100% recommend Vietnam Airlines.
I’m flying Vietnam airlines from San Francisco for the first time in a few weeks on my way to Bangkok. Everything I’ve heard is great. Looking forward to it
Flew PE and J with them recently. Fantastic service and hard product for the price. Moved our travel to Vietnam away from Singapore to them now and into the future.
Oh i love Asia so much David, it is the home of very, very beautiful and intelligent people. I know i will pay a visit one day and i will stay for weeks travelling to all Asian countries and having great fun. 👍😊
I’ve flown both short-haul and long-haul with Vietnam Airlines and I was impressed to see that they flew 787s from HAN to SGN and SGN to HAN. Maybe I’m not used to Asian carriers using long-haul planes for short haul routes but still impressive nonetheless (although on reflection I assume it’s because they need to take their 787 to the Saigon Hub from the Hanoi one, and vice versa.) Only criticisms I have was the IFE was a bit slow at times, you can’t change the map settings on the IFE, and one of the plane’s overhead bins started shaking like crazy. Other than that I rate them pretty well.
Just flew them From Sydney to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh to Sydney and they were absolutely fantastic! Legroom was phenomenal! In an 8 hour overnight flight to have A full dinner and breakfast service! I will definitely be flying with them again! Plus the price was brilliant!
9:00 Those are not fishing boats but lights from dragon fruit farms. Mui Ne area (Binh Thuan province) is probably the most famous region in Vietnam that grows this fruit.
Wonderful job David! Simply Aviation have provided a superior objective view on airline routes, unlike other channels. THANK YOU DAVID AND FELIX! Greatly appreciate it my friends!
I'm about to book my first flight on Vietnam Airlines and wanted to see what my experience will be. I've used Bamboo and Viet Jet inside Vietnam, and for international I really enjoyed Korean Air. I like that Vietnam Airlines is offering nonstop flights now to San Francisco-Saigon.
Btw on Vietnam Airlines from my flight from Paris to Ho Chi Minh City, during the flight, the crew offered instant noodles and water for everyone for those that was still awake
Next week, I will be flying Vietnam Airline's Airbus A350-900 from New Delhi to Hanoi, I have already flew on Thai Airways A350, it will be interesting to compare the both offerings. Indeed the small gestures like hot towels, menu cards, amenity kit makes a small but significant difference. Also, I recently flew twice on Cathay Pacific 777's but the service is pretty bad specially in economy class.
Cathay Pacific is definitely going downhill, I flew on them from Auckland to Tokyo via Hong Kong and back, the service was was pretty bad compared to the previous flights I flew with them.
The many times I have flown Vietnam airlines the have been really good we fly from Sydney to HCMC and then through out Vietnam. The only negative thing I have to say about Vietnam airlines is their IFE screens didn't work on both 5+ hour flights. Outside of that, they were pretty great.
Great flight, the duality hub is still great, but I think one of them should serving different route than another hub. I think Hanoi is great for Flying within Asia, where Ho chi Minh is can be use for Outside Asia.
Vietnam Airlines has slowly been improving. Have flown Vietnam Airlines a number of times. Incheon to Ho Chi Minh Ho Chi Minh to Ha Noi Hai Phong to Ho Chi Minh Ho Chi Minh to Phu Quoc and return Vietnam is actually pretty good. My wife, from Vietnam was surprised. Vietnam Airlines used to be iffy. Not anymore! BTW they even has appropriate to keep my 3 years old nephew out of trouble while in flight.
Awesome trip report, as usual - keep up the good work! Looking fwd to my upcoming trip with them from HND to FRA via HAN in premium economy; both legs are going to be operated by the B787 though.
I’ve flown VNA 3 times on short haul in the past year and every time they’ve blown me away. Considering that they don’t get that much media coverage I was amazed by how good they were. In my opinion the level of the food, seat, crew, lounges and modern planes are well on level with Qatar, Emirates and SIA.
It looks a bit different to flying Garuda Airlines in the 1980's from Darwin Australia to Denpasar Bali. If too many of the seats in the plane were broken they strapped you to the top of the wing.
Thank you for the video. I have got to explore these premium economy seats in our family trip next Summer 2024. I just hope they have this aircraft for the US to Vietnam flight.
Hi, I’m relatively new to the channel. Love the Brutally Honest series, I binged through so much of it! Can someone explain what the difference between Tripreport and brutally honest is? Cheers!
Trip reports don't have narration, just video clips with subtitles, brutally honest videos have narration and really cool graphics. I think these guys save the latter for more interesting flights.
I used to fly Vietnam's business class between South Korea and Vietnam frequently. Very often I had a feeling that they provide different levels of onboard service based one people's race, if you get my drift 😂
Fantastic video, as usual. I wouldn't have thought that Vietnam Airlines had such a great product. If you ever find yourself flying to Aruba (we have a local airline that flies from Miami), just let me know and I'll buy you a beer (local one). I would love to chat in person, if possible. .
Service on their long-haul flight is awesome. I'd love to try their long-haul in the future. However, their mid-haul flight, for example to East Asia isn't as good. Still a very nice product, but no amenity kit as well as hot towel are served.
Simple question, why aviation vloggers always mention the coat hook ? I never saw anyone use that coat hook on my travels and neither on any aviation vlogs. Thank you.
@@phunk8607Clean bright light? Florescent light has been around for a very, very long time. Nothing luxurious about it. Still a good flight overall though.
Last year I flew on Vietnam airlines from Paris to Hanoi to see my family after 5 years due to covid there are a lot off adds and the guide video was very different from before and everything else was the same it was a 12 hour flight I was very hungry when boarding and I ask for some food and they gave me a sandwich it was not that good but service was good but they didn’t give the wet towels first i watched some movies and all games were boring like before but I like them it was night and sleeping was really hard because of everyone talking and talking otherwise food was good cabine crew was nice thank you for reading this if yo read it the whole way but if you didn’t that means your lazy :)
I've enjoyed my recent VN long-haul flights. The main problem is Ho Chi Minh City airport, in my experience. Long queues to enter the country, and then long queues to leave again, plus pretty outdated toilet facilities.
Ho Chi Minh City airport... existing airport...Tan San Nhut....is operating at 130 percent capacity. Can't wait until Long Thanh International Airport comes online. BTW Tan San Nhut dates back to the French and American colonial times in Vietnam.
yeah honestly VN Airlines could’ve had more long-haul destinations if they have a larger and better hub than HAN and SGN. hopefully by the time Long Thanh Airport opens this will be improved
Recently i traveled emirates , they advertised about the amanitykit but i didnt receive even travelling in two flights which one had 6.5hrs and the other 5.2hrs
Turns out, this sea of lights in Southern Vietnam were dragon fruit farms and not fishing boats. 😬 I apologize for the confusion!
it's ok
But the fishing boats do make lots of light polution as well.
Interesting, I grow dragonfuit and am perplexed!

Service on their long-haul flight is awesome. I'd love to try their long-haul in the future. However, their mid-haul flight, for example to East Asia isn't as good. Still a very nice product, but no amenity kit as well as hot towel are served.
@simply_aviation- VN airlines safety video is one of the best . No doubt
Simple question, why aviation vloggers always mention the coat hook ? I never saw anyone use that coat hook on my travels and neither on any aviation vlogs. Thank you.
Do they fly Ho Chi Minh City to London direct ?
Yes they do, with the 787
SAD that SFO is not reachable from HAN, so I have to backtrack to SGN.
The lighting in the aircraft is so old school. It made the cabin look like the waiting room of a clinic.
in asia bright light seen as clean and luxury mate...
@@phunk8607Clean bright light? Florescent light has been around for a very, very long time. Nothing luxurious about it. Still a good flight overall though.
WOW! Better than SQ!
Dragon fruit glows in the dark .. WOW 😮😮
I hope you enjoyed your time in Australia.
Thanks for the video!!
Last year I flew on Vietnam airlines from Paris to Hanoi to see my family after 5 years due to covid there are a lot off adds and the guide video was very different from before and everything else was the same it was a 12 hour flight I was very hungry when boarding and I ask for some food and they gave me a sandwich it was not that good but service was good but they didn’t give the wet towels first i watched some movies and all games were boring like before but I like them it was night and sleeping was really hard because of everyone talking and talking otherwise food was good cabine crew was nice thank you for reading this if yo read it the whole way but if you didn’t that means your lazy :)
suggestion: review singapore airline's mid haul business class
They used to have the B787 for HAN-SYD route. Quite funny😅
Yeah because it's over crowded. Our government spent $16b to build a new international airport which hopefully resolve the issue
I flew Vietnam airlines many times and it was amazing compared to North American airlines.
yeah honestly VN Airlines could’ve had more long-haul destinations if they have a larger and better hub than HAN and SGN. hopefully by the time Long Thanh Airport opens this will be improved
Can you please fly from Abu Dhabi on Etihad through the newly built Terminal?
yea vietnam airlines is good but sometimes its automatic disconect from the atc
Recently i traveled emirates , they advertised about the amanitykit but i didnt receive even travelling in two flights which one had 6.5hrs and the other 5.2hrs
