Most midsize pickup trucks have ventilated seats which I'm use to in my full size truck. This is a must option for me and would keep me from buying one. Also another feature that I wished they'd have is heads up display. I'm glad they don't have a moonroof, I have it on all my vehicles and rarely use them. Okay, pardon me while I vent. I've been driving for 55 years without lane-keeping assist. And I'm sure it's nice to have, but if you don't know how to stay in your lane...stay home. That is not a necessity, just something more to go wrong. I also find that there are way too many people on the road today who aren't paying attention to what's going on around them. David, I think you've made a fair assessment regarding driver distraction. We shouldn't need technology to keep folks in their lane but, as you rightly noted, many drivers just don't pay attention. The smart key access definitely isn’t important to me, but I do like lane keeping assist. Didn’t think I would , but other than in heavy rain I appreciate it.
I have a v6 XLT on order and it doesn't have the e-shifter. Many people don't like the 'lower' vertical screens, however the day is coming for regulations on automotive screens and distractions.
Briefly considered one of these. Checked one out at the dealer. Build quality was questionable. There was a bundle of wires on the floor protruding out from under the front driver's seat.
Looks like a great mid size pickup, great review Micah. If I didn't need the room or towing capacity of my F-150 I wouldn't mind having one of these. Makes parking it easier I'm sure lol. I live in Denver and there has been a couple of times where I had an extremely hard time parking my truck.
I like the style. Your test vehicle was equipped perfectly in my opinion… the best paint color, the best color, leather seats, the lariat option packages with the FX package and the side step. But…The only truck I would want more, is a Ranger **RAPTOR**! So I bought one! 😅
The Chevy, GMC, and Toyota midsize option all look better, IMO. But I seriously don't like the Ford gauge cluster with the GIANT RPM and MPH digits. 10:57 Should all digital gauge clusters come with multiple display options?
Great review! Can you add where the battery location is in the vehicle to the Brian Test? I think this will be helpful to know in case you ever need to jump a vehicle.
Muzios - your Lariat should have come with--or maybe it's an option--the Ford Copilot 360, which comes with a lane-keeping assist feature (my 2020 Ford Escape AWD S has this). It detects when you're drifting out of lane, and does a 'yank' of the wheel to pull you back in, so to speak.
Hate the vertical screen. You’re always looking down instead of up and the screen is way too busy. Minimalism or better organization of the infotainment screen is best. For that Chevy really hit a home run with the Colorado. The portrait screen is unnatural and belongs in a Tesla.
What do you mean by unnatural and belongs in a Tesla? I get the ergonomic argument somewhat, though all our smart phones are used mostly in a portrait orientation so seems like that is natural aside from the point about looking down when in this context.
A 50k plus truck in CAN and it comes with an old key on the XLT. Because of that, they will not see one dime from me. And no one else should tolerate that.
100% true. I went back and forth on whether to include it because it's such an esoteric observation. That said, at some point in the future we'll review a car with a consistent switchgear feel. When that happens, the Ranger will be my point of comparison. :)
Try getting a Tacoma or a Colorado for less with some of the features the Ranger has. For a comparably equipped Tacoma it is several thousand more. The Colorado doesn't have trailer backup assist, offers only a black interior, and the front passenger seat only has manual 4 way adjust regardless of trim level level while the Ranger offers both a manual or power 8-way adjustable front passenger seat. You also have to go with convenience packge 3 on the Colorado with leather seats to get a fold-down center arm rest in the back seat. The option packages for the Colorado are also needlessly complex and the price runs up quickly the more options you get. I say this because I did a thorough comparison between the Ranger and the Colorado. There are mostly minor trade-offs in options between them. I ended up getting the Ranger because the price was only slightly more than the Colorado, but offered more options that I wanted. As for the keypad on the door, I thought why bother when you get Ford Pass that let's you unlock it with your phone.
A top of the line Maverick is in the 36k range. Unless you tow, this is minimally more capable. An EcoBoost F150 is not hugely more expensive and should have some incentives and is way more capable with a 1 mpg penalty. It also has a gigantic back seat instead of a penalty box like mid-sized trucks. Mid sized trucks are lousy value and honestly fitting in a garage is their sole advantage.
Yes, I could not agree more. You should not have to buy a lariat model to get keyless ignition or smart key entry. I had a XLT Ford maverick hybrid and it had a physical key to start it. Ford hello if someone is going to spend a minimum of $34,000 they do not want to stick the key in the ignition. And I’m sure that the XLT Ford ranger is well over $40,000 for a XLT 4 Wheel Dr. No one wants a key . No I do not own a Ford maverick anymore because I got tired of getting a recall notice in the mail. Every other month I had seven recalls in the short eight months that I had this vehicle was terrified to take it on a trip because it may turn into a brick. #FordBuildingSomeQualityIntoYourProduct.
