  • This is the three-minute introduction video of Robert G. Roeder, a Biochemist and Molecular Biologist who received the 2021 Kyoto Prize Laureate in Basic Sciences.
     The Kyoto Prize is an international award of Japanese origin, presented to individuals who have made significant contributions in the fields of science and technology, as well as the arts and philosophy.
     This year, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Presentation Ceremony and other related events have been cancelled. Instead, videos of the Commemorative Lectures will be presented online with the aim of disseminating the achievements and ideas of the laureates to many people. In addition, three-minute laureate introduction videos will be presented as well. Please enjoy.

    【Discovery of the Principle of Gene Transcription Mechanisms in Eukaryotes】
    Robert G. Roeder has revealed the principle of the regulatory mechanism of transcription in eukaryotes through his over 50 years of transcriptional research, by identifying functions of a series of factors such as three distinct RNA polymerases, basic transcription factors, one of the first gene-specific factors, and regulators in transcription from chromatin. Through his achievements, he has made significant contributions to develop present life science.
