love this series - it accurately depicts every upgrade I've ever done. Remember though, they're not "mistakes" they're _features_. e.g. I didn't accidentally drill all the way through the headstock - I created a "resonance pocket", I didn't break off a drill bit when making a hole for the pickguard - I reinforced the body with a steel inlay, etc. 😉
There's nothing like a bit of forward planning to make a job go smoothly. And that was nothing like a bit of forward planning. That's what makes this channel one of the best, funny, entertaining and informative. And to top it all, the look on Colin's face when the first bit of wax dropped. Loved it.
I have watched all 3 epsiodes of this mod & it has been really entertaining. The bits were it goes slightly pearshaped are the best bits. Keep em coming Colin
Thank you for an hour of entertainment. Truly is what I look forward to each week. That guitar will become a labor of love. You could name your price for it but unlikely to part with it.
Looking forward to part 3 with my tea and nibbles, by far the best guitar show on UA-cam, you deserve all the success that comes your way, plus love your guitar 🎸 skills..
Old carpenter's trick, use soap or candle wax to lubricate wood screws for 1st time in screw hole in wood. I use Bee's Wax. This especially works great on the tiny tuner machines mounting screws As far as I'm concerned, all Squires have their own size parts, too small! After staring a while, if you put on a scratch plate, put on a black one.
Output socket was the word you were looking for Col! I have noticed over the last 3 episodes that you have a mischievous grin of satisfaction, which made me chuckle! Only certain guitars can carry off gold hardware, I thought this one did it OK, however, I much prefer the changes now I can see it.
Foe strap buttons lube your screws with a scrape from dry soap bar or Monty's guitar wax go in like a dream. Danger with larger screws is poly finish cracks and chips very easy so drilling hole to correct size absolutely necessary.
For Gods sakes, Colin…just put the screws back in the pick-guard’s holes!! I do it, and it looks great! Oh, great videos on this Squire. Pure entertainment!
Tip for securing the neck: screw in the screws diagonally until they won’t go any further, give all the screws a little slack and fasten them again firmly.
Schadenfruede- taking pleasure in the misfortunes of others. I try to avoid it but when you said the scratch plate won’t fit because the f*cking pickup rings are too big I had to chuckle. Sorry Colin I feel ashamed of myself! That was a great series and, in the end, a great results. Thanks I really enjoyed it.
The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things, of shoes and ships and SEALING WAX. of cabbages and kings, and why the sea is boiling hot ,And wether pigs have wings. Loved all 3 vids. Awesome!
Colin, I've upgraded three Squiers and have never had anywhere near as many set backs as you. Perhaps you should name this guitar "Murphy", as it seems if something could go wrong, it did go wrong. Thank you for sticking with this project ... most people would have quit long ago.
I've enjoyed this series a lot. I mean, it comes at the expense of your sanity, but you're a UA-camr, I feel that likely comes with the job. For screw holes on a black guitar, I go with black screws. You can still see them, but much less, and our brains are used to seeing screws, so it often just... works.
It’s like watching the movie “a bridge too far” well you already know that it’s going to end bad but you have to watch anyway because the actors are so good!
Really enjoy these sorts of videos, Col. It's refreshing to see an actual human attempt these kinds of mods, rather than what you get in most guitar UA-cam videos where it's someone who's a guitar tech or a luthier and expertly does all this stuff. Some of us have barely ever picked up a soldering iron! :)
as my aussie mate davo would say: "the guitar gave you the sheets but you ended up winning in the end hahaha!!!" now the question is will this one be kept or sold when you do your "year end rotation" film....... i hope you keep this one and possibly "fix" the headstock issue.....its truly a hybrid now....fender and gibson bits.....what a work of art!
What I do with bolt on neck guitars is once it’s fully strung and tuned up is loosen the neck screws a quarter to half turn, as you loosen the 3rd or 4th screw you hear a “Ping” as the string tension pulls the neck tightly into the pocket! Once you’ve done this retighten the screws fully! It’s said to improve sustain which I think it does…ever so slightly!
I kind of wished I hadn't even started on my MIM Standard Tele. All I've done so far is mount the Vega Trem II and drill 4 holes in the guard to mark where the WRHB is going. I need to cut the hole and drill holes for the pickup screws so I can mount the pickup. Rout the body slightly so the pickup fits into it. Wire the stacked pots - upper knobs for the bridge, lower knobs for the neck. Find the .022 cap for the neck tone control. Then a full setup. I really dislike intonating a new bridge and setting 12 friggin' saddle height screws. And after all that, put on a new set of 9-42 Fender strings and select an amp for testing. I think your Tele sounds really good, Colin, even if it's unTele-like haha. I've enjoyed the series.
Love your films and your adventures, because they are from the real world and very entertaining! Always looking forward the next one with any guitar you can find 😃😉
Thanks for the peak into your work at the fender custom shop. Seriously though I like it. It sounded great, seems to be remaining in one piece. Almost a disaster-caster but with plenty of brute-force and ignorance you got a good result. Thanks Colin
The all black choice makes it look metal as hell… kind of something Iike Metallica would have played if they would have ever dared play a Squier. Nice, job. It was clearly a labor (of love?).
I feel your pain. Trying to change a kill switch. The old one had 3 wires, and the new one has 2. But I've been playing my gold top troublemaker, and it's becoming one of my favorites!
Hi Colin, what I would have tried for concealing the pick guard holes would be to melt the wax in them as you did, then level the wax using a razor blade with scotch tape on the corners to prevent scratching the finish, then give it a light once over with a blow dryer, just enough to melt the wax at the surface so hopefully it will then set up smooth and shiny. If you care enough you might try the blow dryer on yours to see if it shines them up. I was tempted to laugh at some the boo boos that happened here but then realized that I have no idea how I would fare if I were doing work in front of a camera to send out to the world at large. Anyway it's good to see someone take on a project like this. It shows that with some care one can make something better than it was and get a feeling of accomplishment doing it. That guitar sounds great with the new pickups and wiring. Thanks for the videos.
I must say this series has been quite emtertaining and fun. It shows how things actually go when doing upgrades, but I have decided having you do upgrades on one of my guitars might not be prudent. LOL
As a note for the future. Either cut the springs you have down. Or use shorter ones next time. I've got at least 3 different length pickup ring screws in my stash. Makes battling the tiny screws and prone to cracking pickup rings, much easier to assemble. Plus, having all that tension on the pickup adjustment heights. Usually makes them sit cockeyed. Having the proper length springs and screws on both pickups(they require different lengths) allows them to sit flush. Its the little things that matter in the end. One of my pet peaves is crooked pickups. Peace!
FYI, you don't have to melt the wax into the screw holes, just rub the candle across it to fill it in. We used to use "Crayon" brand crayolas for this in the (American) shop I worked at. Even though I lived in England for a year, I don't know if crayola is an English language term, and Americanism or a Britishism. At any rate, "Crayons" work for filling screw holes pretty well, just rub it back and forth over the hole until it fills in.
i think the wax or soap on screw threads is to reduce friction and maybe splitting. and i was reaching over to stop you putting long screw into the top strap button lol. the wax is great. use different colours for a spotted tele 😁
Enjoyed watching your troubles with this project Col! I think I might dig out my modern player tele I don't use and 'upgrade' it. Wonder how I'll get on, never done it before.
Such a simple idea, upgrade a Squire Telecaster with materials you already own...Three vlogs later, and it's now done - and so is the host! What a palaver, anything which could go wrong, did, so the fact you continued, soldiered on, is great credit to your tenacity (and, ability to express frustration as it happens!) and sheer bloody-mindedness. A great series, a very honest series and a satisfying conclusion - so, the question now is, are you keeping the cursed thing?!
To fill the holes I use a crayon. Find a close matching colour then push and twist it into the hole then push hard left or right and it’ll snap off at the surface. Can then polish any excess away and leaves it basically flush. Can also use a touch of nail varnish on top of it to match the paint closer.
I've enjoyed your journey - bloodied but unbowed! not sure if "victorious"' applies, but the darn thing plays and looks better than before - well done!
Nice to see you overcome the innate peril involved in your endeavor, Colin! The final results are very nice! BTW, another way to deal with the open scratch plate holes is to just get some black pickguard screws and use them to fill the holes and give a finished look that remains reversible. I think a black scratch plate would look good too! Nice job!! 👍
I'm a Tele guy and you made this look like an EVH Wolfgang took a dump on this guitar. 💩👍✨ I like the witch hat knobs and I like chrome parts over gold but the zebra humbucker and the black humbucker make this look like a knockoff. Honestly a Les Trem and some Filtertron style pickups would redeem this guitar.🤔
Yep, just as Epiphones with bolt on necks and tuno-matic bridges, the neck pocket itself has a fallaway angle. Various forms of Jazzmasters now come with this feature,... but the correct vintage spec is essentially an ill fitting joint in need of a fairly thick shim for a playable neck angle.
Passion 🎉 your abilities as a luthier exceed my own still it adds to your interest if you’re hands on in maintaining your own guitar. Nothing more adaptable than a Tele. There are some instruments I prefer to have the best luthier I can afford work on when needed but that’s from knowing my own limitations and where “experimenting” isn’t wise ❤Guitarista’s❤ you help us expand on what we can personally do wisely Thank You for that ya Limey 😊
Recently, I bought a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top from my instructor. I spent three and one-half nights putting it through a full setup, using Gibson's specs. The G string still buzzes, so I have to check the fret heights. Previously, I did some upgrades on a gifted Squire Affinity. It's still a mess. I understand the frustrations and cursing, Colin!
I'm not sure whether you've inspired me to mod a guitar or inspired me to never attempt it, but either way, it was a blast to watch, Colin. Great stuff!! 👍
Random shit episodes are fun Col. Man I had some laughs - we've all had similar experiences. Good to mix things up. Well done on getting it finished, sounded alright mate.
Cheers Colin, really enjoyed this series, yeh there were challenges as sh*^ happens as we know. The thing is, us nerds get as much joy out of tinkering, modding and fixing guitars as we do actually playing them! Its all part of the addiction mate. Guitar sounds damn good to me!
Well done Col, you perservered and it's making sounds rather than splintered in the bin. Rather see this than watch you try and convince yourself to like a PRS ;)
You should give ICON PLATES a look. I'm not affiliated or sponsored by them😅 but I have bought 5-or-7 of them for almost all my bolt on neck guitars. Again thank you for keeping all us Buggers 😂 entertained 🎉
Yo Ho Ho and 'me' bottle of rum is "half-full" ! Great job... Is now a work-of-art ! Customized 'Colin' Guitaristas Squier ! Wax ? 80/20 in favour... although think a Black Pick-guard would be the (black) icing on the cake ! Didn't test your "Henry's" ?? Maybe with new strings and when you match this against other contenders ? Bought a 'Beauty' One-of-a-Kind Acoustic 0000001 'irreplaceable' and the Manager caught the headstock on the counter and knocked a chip in it. He was gutted and profusely apologized... (So was I) ... and so... I thanked him for leaving his 'signature' on it ! He really is a good caring bloke... Don't notice the 'chip' now... Won't sink a big ship as 'they' (old sailors) say ! Kettle ON and looking forward to next Friday 🤠...
love this series - it accurately depicts every upgrade I've ever done. Remember though, they're not "mistakes" they're _features_. e.g. I didn't accidentally drill all the way through the headstock - I created a "resonance pocket", I didn't break off a drill bit when making a hole for the pickguard - I reinforced the body with a steel inlay, etc. 😉
🤣👍
Happy little accidents.
I created a "resonance pocket" on a Peavey Predator I have but I didn't know it was called that at the time. Sounds better now.
There's nothing like a bit of forward planning to make a job go smoothly.
And that was nothing like a bit of forward planning.

“ Don’t try this at home boys and girls” !
Great Series well worth the price of admission!
Bravo Col !

A "Black Scratch Plate" would look good !!
Or clear. Sans pickguard, black screws would look good, IMO.
Output socket was the word you were looking for Col!

An apt conclusion, Colin, with a suitable number of small problems. It wouldn't have been so much fun without them. Thanks.
For Gods sakes, Colin…just put the screws back in the pick-guard’s holes!! I do it, and it looks great! Oh, great videos on this Squire. Pure entertainment!
Thanks Colin. Your adventures always give me a great start to the weekend. She sounds great!
Colin's "adventures" and misadventures! 😆
My favorite genre of Guitarista film! Reminds me of any time I work on a guitar.
my word cl she sound perfect, and so it should the amount of effort and cusses you put into these three vids, but she speaks to me.
Watched on the TV channel earlier, terrific fun, I'd like more of these sort of vids. 👍🎸😄
I love watching your triumphs and muckups. It's all educational and good fun. 👍👍👍👌👌👏👏👏👏

Captain Scarlet! Despite his fatal injuries, he's returning to life!

Lucky his fingers are not bleeding while playing. Cool name for a Guitar "the cursed one"
as my aussie mate davo would say:

Top job all round Colin and I really enjoyed the series. Would love to see more transformations like this. Brilliant mate.
I'll never skip a second. Love every second of every episode. Watching part 3 right now. Curious how it ends...
Really, really enjoyed this. Please do more. Thinking about a partscaster project myself.
Don’t do it😂
You have way more patience than I do. I probably would have smashed it in episode 1 of this saga
I hope we get another 4 episodes 👍 I always thought it was just me that had this much trouble lol 👍 Cheers Colin for everything you do .
Put the pick guard screws back into the holes. Looks cool and neat..
Or use black screws?
Cracked headstock and candle wax all fit with the paranormal theme, dang thing is haunted!
This is the voice of the Mysterons. We know that you can hear us, Earthmen. Now we're going to fuck up your Telecaster...
Sounds sweet. Worth all the blood, sweat and tears. Looking forward to your next sonic adventure.
Fair play Colin....ya stuck with it.
I've been that soldier...
I felt your pain and swore along with you...
See ya next week..🤟
You're a brace man, Col ! Loved this series ! Sounds fantastic btw.
Thanks as always Colin, welcome to the real world of modding guitars
Love your films and your adventures, because they are from the real world and very entertaining! Always looking forward the next one with any guitar you can find 😃😉

Just love it and keep em coming
No friday is complet whitout guitaristas thank you ever so mutch 😊
An oddly fun watch. Cheers, Colin.
Great! Like the look with no scratch-plate.
The all black choice makes it look metal as hell… kind of something Iike Metallica would have played if they would have ever dared play a Squier. Nice, job. It was clearly a labor (of love?).

Man , i been waiting , i have a , lp, tele , and strat on my bench right now , i'll have to watch this later tonight , can't wait , love this show !
Whaou ! It's been a long trip Colin ! All the good things come to an end... ;-) Thanks for sharing with us that !

Cheers I definitely think with a bit of finesse and finishing the wax could work 😁👍
Hey Colin, Good Job. These candles are new to me. I usually use Titebond and Dowels then sand it flush and touch it up with a Furniture Marker 🍺🇨🇦
I must say this series has been quite emtertaining and fun. It shows how things actually go when doing upgrades, but I have decided having you do upgrades on one of my guitars might not be prudent. LOL
Funny enough have decided all mine are great as they are as well 😂
Strong Intro, Colin. This axe would be a fabulous rhythm guitar 👌💫
That's quite the Star Trekky looking drill machine you've got there!
Peace!
I liked it. Live and learn and all that. You got there in the end. Thank you for the video!
For all the frustration it looks much better now.
Great job!!!! Grats! Do not afraid to do distressed version of guitar. It is modern path.🎉
That thing is cursed.
Don't stop modding Col, it's a great watch
Honestly I think a 2 or 3 ply black/parchment or black/parchment/black pickguard would look amazing on it it.
The guitar sounds great and looks the business! I love gloss black guitars!
FYI, you don't have to melt the wax into the screw holes, just rub the candle across it to fill it in. We used to use "Crayon" brand crayolas for this in the (American) shop I worked at. Cheers yes crayola is a brand here too… thanks for tip!
i think the wax or soap on screw threads is to reduce friction and maybe splitting. and i was reaching over to stop you putting long screw into the top strap button lol. the wax is great. use different colours for a spotted tele 😁
great video , a little sandpaper on those gold screws will turn them silver pretty fast , works in a pinch anyway 😄
I enjoyed watching this project. Thanks Colin.
IMHO it sounds pretty wonderful...
Hope it sounds as good from your POV
Cheerios, laddie
You did great as always! And what would a film really be without the “shit happens” part lol!
Enjoyed watching your troubles with this project Col! I think I might dig out my modern player tele I don't use and 'upgrade' it. Wonder how I'll get on, never done it before.
This guitar cost you more than a top line Gibson SG ‼️ Hopefully you got a good education in this episode ❗🤣😂
No wonder you shouldn't mod it. He's going to modify it even
More?
I never kept up with the pricing due not to beig a fan . They didn't impress me when they first came out
I would use a sharpie to color in the piece of maple headstock poking through, you'll hardly ever notice it again....
That sealing wax trick had me thinking… there must be a proper way of doing this.
I’m sure there is… needs a bit more finesse but it could work for sure 👍
well then, Devilbob's your uncle now! I like it without the pickguard, and it sounds really nice. Good job Col, see ya next week! CHEERS
Such a simple idea, upgrade a Squire Telecaster with materials you already own...Three vlogs later, and it's now done - and so is the host! For a while at least.... got to really after all we've been through haven't I? 🤣👍

“I’ve opted for the destructive option” on this project? Thought you were inviting a part 4 with that Col.
Trouble Maker = You ain't kidding !
Well done Col, you perservered and it's making sounds rather than splintered in the bin. Rather see this than watch you try and convince yourself to like a PRS ;)
Colin I and most of us absolutely love and appreciate you! But yes, this should have been done on a Squire Sonic.....not this one.....🤕🤒😷😴😪🤤
You should give ICON PLATES a look. I'm not affiliated or sponsored by them😅 but I have bought 5-or-7 of them for almost all my bolt on neck guitars.

It's experiments like with the wax that ultimately lead to good ideas, you're not an idiot for experimenting.
Cheers 😁... with a bit if finesse there's a solution to be found here somewhere I reckon 👍
Colin V Troublemaker Round 3!? Best get stuck in wit a tea and watch the brother lose his marbles hammering in some poles or tuners ha! Good luck
