*I admire George's praise for Linda. In 1977 at Ry Cooder's show at the Roxy, Linda sat near the front door with Ronnie Wood and I shook her lovely hand. Linda is the goddess Isis in the flesh, and that's an understatement!!*
Linda once said that when she listens to George Jones she "cries like a housewife". I love this! She is totally unrehearsed, even directs the band a few times and does a marvelous job. It's basically a solo until George finally comes in towards the end.
I was at this gig. The fact that George showed was a relief, his performance was great and Linda was thrilling. Will never forget it. Thanks for this gem.
Craig Mann, if you're still YouTubing, please mine your memories of this spectacular performance and share them with us. You all were a great audience, too-sounds like you ate it up!
This is lovely - pure country. I loved Linda in her rock queen incarnation but her voice really suited these old time ballads and I gather it was what she really liked.
The Net, and UA-cam in particular. are so great. Here you have a recording of George Jones begging LInda Ronstadt to sing with him. We are lucky to live in this era. You can find Hank Williams, Jr. doing versions of If You Don't Like Hank Williams, in which he mentions 10 male singers and bands, and then says "I'm in love with Linda Ronstadt". She is the only woman that he mentions. In Glenn Campbell's last video in which he looks back at his life, he says that he most enjoyed singing duets "with Linda Ronstadt and other singers". She is the only woman -- the only person -- that he names. Why isn't this country singer's singer in the Country Music Hall of Fame?
There is much talk about the "dark web" but the "light web" is much more powerful. Thank you for shining a light on this moment in time in a club in NYC and immortalizing two immortals.
Is it any wonder that she’s lent her vocals to over 100 albums of other performers. Highly underrated for her country music contribution. I wish George had filled in for Emmylou from the first chorus.
TJ Wash, this was without a doubt, my favorite rendition of this song. Ever since, I saw the documentary in the theater in September, I have searched, and pretty much found, all the recordings of her as a lead singer or when her name is "featured" in the title, but you are so right about all the unknown back-up vocals. I am a very uncool 62 year old snd don't have extensive knowledge of my own generation's music. I was an old movie buff back in the 70's and 80's who was thrilled when Ms. Ronstadt's career veered off into the American Songbook. I depend on UA-cam commenters to tip me off to these backup vocals-the other day, someone mentioned her harmonizing on Chesapeake's Bed of Roses. It was glorious. Please keep commenting on her performances and mentioning her more "obscure contributions." I'm home alone a lot with my old gimpy dog, and Ms. Ronstadt and her collaborators are keeping us company. As I ask Alexa at least once a day to play such-and-such a song by Linda Ronstadt, I swear, if my dog, Lucy, could talk, she would say, "Who the heck is Linda Ronstadt?!!!"
Actually, the title should be Linda Ronstadt with 6 words from George Jones. Drunk again George.....you had an opportunity sing with the most successful female singer of the era....and you didn't show up.
And to think she’s been snubbed by CMHOF because she dared to do other genres besdides country. It’d be intetesting to review the list of inductees to see which were less successful in the genre. RRHOF was the same way but it was OK for them to induct Madonna. MA-FKN-DONNA

He was in pretty bad shape at this point in his career.

So did LR have no idea he was going to ask her to do this? Unrehearsed, not warmed up etc.?????
Linda Ronstadt is one of the top female vocalist my ear's have EVER heard.
Trina McLauchlin I agree I love her so much..
Trina McLauchlin Nobody else is even close as far as I’m concerned.

George was in awe of this stunningly beautiful singer and let her out on her own
At first I read top female socialists lol. Yes, you have good ears and I have bad eyes.

TJ Wash I know what you mean. I was there and OMG Linda was as COUNTRY and WESTERN as any female voice ever. We should thank Tucson.
Agree big time. She should be in the CMHOF. George begged her to join him.

@@lnl3237 Here's a website devoted to listing all her backing vocal work.

@@Linkmeister518 Thanks!
I would have loved a double album of these two singing together. So good together.
too bad they didn't on this one
Superb -live, raw and the real deal. Luv how Linda attempts to direct the band.
She normally sings this quite a bit faster but this tempo shows off the strength of her voice
Lord what a voice!
What a gem! I love her studio version but this one is over the top...all bar room shuffle and all! Thanks for the post.
Fantastic duet. Great song. Just love it. Thanks.

So did Jones just disappear and make her sing this all by herself? Talk about grace under pressure.

MARTINA MCBRIDE SOUNDS SIMULAR TO LINDA (ON MY SON'S APP). BRENDA.
Mc Bride says Linda is her main influence.
