Quick Hands vs Mustangs; Brains & Shifting; Emira Review - TST Podcast
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 сер 2024
- On this episode Matt and I are driving TO the Lotus factory IN a Lotus Emira.
We give our take on the cars, events, and cost of Goodwood. Then we discuss the pros and alarming cons of the hale bale safety system.
Plus, roundabouts versus stop signs, and a somewhat scientific breakdown of our personal difficulties driving from the right-hand seat.
Lastly we answer Patreon questions regarding: which car we would drive up the Goodwood Hill, why “quick hands” won’t save Mustangs from Cars and Coffee mishaps; the Ineos Grenadier; which UK cars caught our eye; the deal with eggs; which 2+2 delivers a “roadster-like” experience, and more!
Oh, and I (Zack) pronounce Al-peen wrong, despite pronouncing it correctly a month ago. I’ll blame the lack of sleep.

The in car podcast format has been great the few times y'all have done it. Thanks for this, boys.
great new format style, would like to see this done again every couple of months. love from the UK
Matt is correct on the Alpine/Alpina pronunciation thing.
I think Kapalan hates Farrah.
When pronounced with an American accent, yeah.. But Zack was correct when he said it's somewhere in between, at least when pronounced with a proper French accent. ua-cam.com/video/pLelpHVLdxI/v-deo.htmlsi=bI26E9qySlrMI61P
Just got back from from two weeks driving around France and Spain. The roundabout is so superior. Coming back to stoplights everywhere is just miserable. Even my fiancé was frustrated after coming back.
As a UK resident I wouldn't agree on the crossovers not taking over. As an experiment, it's worth taking a look at a handful of manufacturers' UK websites and looking at the new models currently being sold. More traditional cars are being replaced by small and medium sized crossovers left right and centre. One indication of the trend is that Ford have killed of the Fiesta, of all things. Remember that the Fiesta was the best selling car in this country for a solid decade, but nah they're killing it off.
totally agree. One weird side effect I've found is that the ticket machines at car park barriers are also getting taller because of crossovers etc. If you are in a low riding car, getting the actual ticket can be a strain.
Here in the US it's insane tho. Like 80% of vehicles are crossovers and trucks. I even wanted a car or hatchback but couldn't even find a used one that was decent, had to buy a dang crossover if I wanted a hatch, at least that wasn't a terrible ticking time bomb.
There are no less than three dozen roundabouts within 15 minutes of me in central ohio but likely more. It is really great and they are constantly removing intersections and replacing them around here so it gets better and better every year.
Was just about to say something similar, in Ohio as well.
Enjoyed this. As a current US resident but from the UK, it's very nostalgic watching you drive around roads I'm very familiar with. I grew up being jealous of European roads, but I do miss driving in the UK! I'm used to it now, but there is just a lot more general chaos on US roads. And the stop signs... I'm convinced half the traffic in the US would disappear overnight if stop signs were swapped for yield or roundabouts!
Sitting in the back of that car listening to them banter about cars would be my favorite roadtrip ever
Zack, going forward it would be good to check that the ad read volume levels are the same as the podcast levels. The sudden jump in volume btwn the podcast and ad read feels like when you get suddenly woken up in the 90s at 2am to those booming compilation mixtape infomercials
Because of the quality of English food and women, English men became the greatest sailors the world had known.
😂😂😂
Such a great idea, I usually consume this podcast on my comute, so it feels very apt to have a few car episodes.
Love the on the road format, Peace from Australia gents.
Great to meet you both. Funny to see Matt driving on U.K. roads. Fyi we call the sidewalk the ‘pavement’.

Thank you kind sir!
Anyone see the Ineos Grenadier conversation? Listened twice and didn’t hear it.
I laughed out loud during your discussion on breakfast. You guys are most funny when unscripted and candid.
Great idea a podcast recorded in a car! Especially as I know the route you drove: A429, A46, M6, A14
French: Al-pine German BMW: Al-Pee-na
Nice to see that VW Amarok truck in Zak's window. This podcast is so clear for being in car! Well done!
Neat car show. I dig and would enjoy more road trip in review shows.
The more I see Lotus cars i feel like they would be a cool car to own, especislly the older ones like an Elise SC/Series 2 or whatever or a Exige S. Toyota engines etc - basically a modern super MR2 in my head in a way lol.
That felt very casual and like a roadtrip conversation. Pretty cool. Thanks guys! Have been enjoying the Goodwood FOS episodes. 👌🏾
(to Matt's comments about driving the RHD Emira) the thing I found curious about learning to drive a manual was that it doesn't really matter which side the controls are on. Strangely enough, when it comes to shifting you're programming muscle memory for both sides at once, even if you're mostly only using just one hand. For example, my first manual car was a JDM Honda Prelude with the controls on the right side of the car. I did learn to drive manual in driving school way back, but I wasn't good at it by the time I bought that Prelude. When going full throttle in first - I couldn't perform a quick upshift to second, my movements were very deliberate and slow. But after a few weeks the skill came to me, it's all just a matter of practice. And here's the interesting part. At about the same time I bought that Prelude a buddy of mine got himself a manual Passat CC with the controls on the left. I borrowed his car from time to time and would hop between his and mine pretty often, and I found that I had no trouble at all quickly and confidently shifting with my right hand as opposed to my left which I was used to (and actively programmed in my Prelude). For whatever that's worth.
Roundabouts are amazing. When I moved from The Netherlands to South Africa I noticed not every country understands roundabouts. People in NL understand roundabouts, so it is amazing. In SA they don't so it gets sketchy sometimes. And regarding the turn signal, in SA we drive on the same side as the UK and some cars have the turn signal on the window side and some have it on the other side of the steering wheel.
Roadtripping with Matt & Zack is a real treat.
I wouldn't mind if you did these semi occasionally, England or no England. Wouldn't mind it one bit!
I really enjoyed this podcast, I agree with other comments I think this occasional format works really well, it's awesome that you seem to have enjoyed your time in the UK and the content that has come out of it has been really enjoyable.
It seems like you've had the opportunity to explore the roads, food and on offer (and that first pint in a while!).
That roundabout in Pasadena had to ADD stop signs a bit after it was built, due to so many people not knowing how to navigate it 😒
Recently returned from road trip in Scotland , please listen to Matt and Zach comments on roads and driving in UK . Spot on !
As a Brit it’s interesting to hear your perspective on the nuance of driving on British roads. I’m so used to it I don’t even think about it 😂
This was a really nice one, guys!
this was more interesting than I had guessed, thank you
To me, the more that the Time Trial aspect of going up the Goodwood Hillclimb started to be pushed and publicized, the less Goodwood felt special to me as the fan that'll probably never get to go in person.
I always felt that if you wanted to watch vintage cars race in something resembling period, the Goodwood Revival is right there, while the Festival of Speed was a mix of demonstration runs of cool old cars and actual "Serious" runs up the hill.
Its very sureal seeing you guys driving down my local roads so shout out from the home of Jaguar and British car design, Coventry! 😄
Also RE: Mobile phone use. Totally illegal in the UK to use a device behind the wheel. 6 points out of 12, so 2x strike rule before a ban + Fines! Good infotainment/Carplay is more than a godsend here.
16:00 Well, you & Zack said it in this whole segment. They have obviously slowed down the event this year. Evidence is there with the final times compared to the numbers from years past. They are not equipped for a perpetually increasing shootout with cars that can beat the Mcmurty. So, obviously we must be happy with an affordable interactive car show. Brilliant. With that said the 2021 shoot out is a must watch on UA-cam if anyone out there hasn't seen it.
For good reason, safety matters.
Man it’s priceless having a Matt to your Zack or vice a versa, if not that I’ll take the Emira.
I really enjoy when you guys are just on an adventure and film an episode. Guest crammed in the back and rotate could be fun.
What an awesome podcast!!! Love them all
Anyone seen where they discuss the Ineos Grenadier? I’m sure I missed it.
Great podcast, always look forward to your guys' work! Another comment about the Crossover in this country though, They are really taking over. A lot of hatches and wagons are now no longer even offered. I hope there's a bit of a reversal.
Love the format! Zack just needs a laptop to throw stuff up on the ‘screen’ 😜
Congrat on a great purchase!!!🎉 I know you said you were going to keep it stock and treated as a daily, but can you please do a 1M clone conversion and focus on the rear fender flare installation process !!!🙏🏾🫶🏽🫠🫠🫠😂😂🍺
Heh Matt you would like the roads here in NZ probably similar to the English roads especially the B roads but with alot of hills 😊
41:45 using your phone (freehand, not in a holder) is 6 points and £200 fine. Do it twice and you've got an instant driving ban.
Really enjoyed this one - hearing you talk about driving through the New Forest, Winchester back roads on a Farmers Market day and top notch Indian food in Chichester! You guys really need to go to Goodwood Revival for a truly English eccentric experience.
It’s definitely AlpinE for the French brand and AlpinA for the German one.
1:38:25 Jetta used to be on sale in EU, but got discontinued. Passat is still on sale, but not as popular as the Skoda octavia
Also the European Passat is not the same as the American Passat. The American passar is a budget rental car, while the euro passar is understated Audi A4
There are several roundabouts in Portland Oregon that have stop signs. It so defeats the purpose of a roundabout. Also I usually see 1 person not knowing how to drive through a roundabout. So sad😥
Nerd point about stalks, most/all European right hand drive cars have the indictors on the left, but Japanese cars have traditionally had them on the right...
Also Australian cars traditionally had them on the right (when we made them).
do this and the review video together is gon be lit
During my test-drive of the Emira I noticed that "Track Mode" gives a different layout for the screen/tachometer allowing for a bit better view.
Oh shit, this is really cool.
at 38:40 you guys completely missed the new Gemera cup holder brou-ha-ha. They are paired with the ability to refrigerate a milkshake or a soda on the one hand and warm a coffee on the other. The luggage is carbon fibre with color coordinated body panels and wheels! The drive system is a a psycho, three banger with their freevalve technology and an electric motor that looks like a huge cock ring. The other way they recently came up with to power it is with their crazy high power V8 (with different heads to allow fit & turbo clearance+.
Maybe it's just me, but I find a lot of modern cars difficult to really tell the dimensions. Driving around in an RF Miata feels way more difficult even though our lanes are huge in Texas. I felt much more aware driving trucks and step side bread trucks in Hawaii. Then again they have huge mirrors where I can also see where I am in the lane at a glance. In my 30-year-old MR2, I don't have these problems for whatever reason and for some reason I have a better feel for where the corners of the car are. I felt like 90s f bodies were kind of hard to tell the feont distance unless the headlights were popped up and I think an FD RX7 was much easier especially with the headlights popped open.
The Seiko Marine Master 300 has a Grand Seiko movement inside it. I have one of the newer Prospex Versions.
The french one is mosdef Alpine (with a silent E).
this sounds great for being inside a car driven at speed. What kind of lavs and recorder do you use? Any noise cancellation in post? Great show
Lavs are simple mics running into RODE 3.5-to-XLR adapters. ZOOM H5 with limiting on. In Premiere I add a broadcast filter and set a compressor. - Zack
I was just talking about a pedal cam for your test drives
Haven’t made Goodwood yet, can one see most everything in one day or should 2 or 3 days be planned for?
I’m hearing a lot of AYG in Matt’s Smart Car story ha
When does the embargo on Emira i4 impressions lift?
It was a Skoda Superb, not a Passat. And the green means its more than likely a 280, so all wheel drive 2.0 EA888 engine, Golf R basically. Very tunable. 100x cooler if it was an estate!
We do get Passat, Jetta ec. Often the Skoda version of a new platform does get released first though.
Škodas to the best of my understanding is a well equipped, cheaper, better warrantied VW with a worse badge. At least it used to be this way, nowadays they’re actually quite good and the stigma is all but gone.
But nah that’s the way it is in Europe, we get the VWs but we have Škodas and Seats as options
Being logical... most people are right handed, Does it make sense for the dominant hand to be in charge of direction (steering) Or what gear you are in (*if* you have a manual and not an automatic or semi-automatic deal).
I'd argue right hand drive and dominant control of direction is better.
Sorry, what does the Cayman engine have to come out for? In fact, there are things in the 911 that are much harder because there's no top access panel. Which isn't to say the 911 is harder overall, but there are very, very few things on the Cayman where the engine has to come out. Having done about 200,000 miles in three different Caymans, the engine has never had to come out and I've never heard of any engine out work on any Cayman other than for a rebuild, for which you'd obviously have to have the engine out on a 911, too.
In car is fun for sure
Alpine: Matt a raison!
Anyone recognize what watch Zach is wearing?
When are you guys coming back next to the UK 🇬🇧 ?
I guess U.K roads are a cross between California and Germany. The good bits of tarmac are really nice... the bad bits are poorly patched from the top, until they're forced to dig them up and do it properly.
Potholes cause uproar & civil unrest here 🤣The public tend to not rest until they are sorted. But so does the roadworks that fixes them lol
The country roads are where it's at though. A little bit rough & narrow-ish but with low hedges for vision and a national speed limit that seems almost impossible to reach without ending up in a hedge first.
Great fun in smaller low powered cars. Nightmare in anything bigger than a Ford Transit.
Fascinating to hear your views on how UK drivers buy what they need not massive vehicles. As someone who lives in the UK, the car worlds perception is very much everyone is buying 'massive' pointless SUVs ... I dread to think how bad it is in the US if you think the UK is reasonable in terms of the SUV takeover.
question: in RHD countries like UK, Is the left lane slow, and right lane fast?, or is it like anywhere else?
Correct, left slow, right fast!
Drive in the left most lane at all times, unless overtaking. So our motorways have the 'driving' lane and two overtaking lanes - once your past the slower car, move back to the left.
Most british people cant get that right these days, mind.
Isn't it " Al-PINE " for the Renault and " Al -PEENA " for the BMW? Or is this just how we say it in Aus/Nz
Right.
Now Matt, why hanging out in the inside lane? Shouldn’t you be passing, then switching back to outer lanes? Come ooooonnnnn… 😔😢
Winchester is the former capital of England and one of the oldest cities in England hence the old narrow roads.
Friendly note that Thailand was not a European colony
Senna said that you need to drive with your eyes closed. Not literally of course
Yes, the French car is AL-PEEN.
The Lotus Emira kinda reminds me of a Noble
Wow
42:08 yup wait till you come across a BMW M driver .
Alpina is the bmw tuner.
Came here just to say this!
ad audio is ridiculously loud compared to show audio
ALWAYS fight your tickete
For non Mustang people who arent in the know...the MT82 from the GT is a superior transmission than the Tremec.. it has a stronger set of gears.
When are you going to let Zack take the wheel?
Gentlemen, it's pronounced "AL-PINE (like pinecone)" o_o!
matt may have read books about traffic but still spent an hour and 45 minutes in the right lane in this video. nice episode though
If you're making progress past slower traffic it's OK. I wasn't keeping an eye on the forward cam but didn't notice any significant lane 2/3 hogging
The Volkswagen Amerock is not sold in the United States because of the chicken tax utility vehicles made in Europe are subject to very high import taxes in the United States. That’s Volkswagen cannot justify selling the Amorak here.
Pronouncing Alpine reminds me of pronouncing Murcielago. Unless you’re a native speaker you’re technically getting it wrong. That being said I think Matt is more correct than Zach based on how the British guys say it on Sky F1.
Matt dresses like he's 35 and 85 at the same time
I swear Zack low key hates Matt. He always seems so annoyed but won’t say anything and call out Farrah.
quick hands, slow feet.
California has awful roads with no rain or snow lol
lol The best British food isn't technically British. 100% facts. 🤣
Sorry guys, it's bland af
I always laugh when Matt talks crap on people who buy big trucks or vehicles you don’t need but owns like 6 cars. Everyone has their own justification.
