    I've dived the blue hole in Belize several times. The black tip and reef sharks flitting in and out of the shadows, swimming right next to you is one of the coolest experiences you can have as a diver

    Huh, I didn't know the Blue Holes got so deprived of oxygen that low, but it makes sense. The preservation properties make me think of the Great Lakes in Michigan, how they're so cold and still that they actively preserve the dead.

    Lots of reasons are given to certain animal behaviours, and I think sometimes we often overlook the possibility that maybe they just like it, for the same way humans will randomly prefer certain things over others.

    • @rockyevans1584
      @rockyevans1584 День тому

      Humans dont prefer things randomly lol. Its definitely tough to identify the incentives behind behaviors, including for ourselves but particularly in animals who's brains are entirely different from our own. No one and no thing is doing anything randomly

    I dove the Great Blue Hole in Belize but it was a bit disappointing. An abundance of life on top but very little below 10 meters. The dive master took us down to 40 meters to look at some very large stalactites in a pocket of the wall which were very cool in themselves. I did see one shark out towards the middle of the hole but just at the range of visibility. I've crossed that dive off my bucket list but I've no good reason to do it again.
    The rest of the diving around the Belize reefs were much better than the Great Blue Hole.
    (ETA, my avatar was taken on that day trip.)

    I've dived the Lost Blue Home twice, and both times it was full of blacknose sharks. It was amazing - when we dropped down to 120ft, all of a sudden hundreds of the sharks spilled out of the hole and onto the seagrass fields outside.
    We were there in June on the Car Ppalu, when they breed.

    9:35 the dead / preserved sharks could have been down there “for quite a while”…? I get that you wouldn’t have an exact figure, but “quite a while” is incredibly vague.
    does “quite a while” mean like ~two weeks? or ~two months? or do you mean more like ~two years? _~two decades??_ I’m not a marine biologist, so I have no frame of reference haha; I don’t even know how long they’re SUPPOSED to remain intact like that.

    • @toscadonna

      Scientists would have to figure the average temperature of the water down there and then figure out how much adipocere has been formed in the shark corpses. Maybe then they could come up with an actual estimate of time of demise.

    I was actually just watching a video yesterday about the blue hole in Belize. When talking about how dangerous it was the presenter said about how there were sharks around so you'd be in trouble if you cut yourself on the coral. All I could think of is how annoyed Kris would be at sharks being portrayed as bloodthirsty evil things out to get people.

    I would love to take one of those submersibles into one of those holes. I'm terrified of dark black water that I can't see the bottom of, so a submersible would be the only way I think I would feel secure enough to explore something like this. I love aquariums and watching videos about sea life but when I see the dark abyss in person, I start to panic.
