    It is great to see Matthew evolving on camera. A while back it was difficult for Randy to drag a couple of words from him. This one was a great show. I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Randy and son. Well done and a great Buck to boot.

    Randy - Thanks for the positive commentary about the petroleum industry maintaining wildlife habitat. My wife and i manage our land as a wildlife paradise while extracting oil and natural gas. Some land is able to be maintained as wildlife habitat instead of being developed specifically because of the returns from petroleum. These interests are not contradictory. Drill, baby drill!

    I've worked in the gas plant that is in the start of episode 1 since 2006 and want to say as much as I love Randy and how he represents this our sport, he severely miss-represented the oil and gas infrastructure change from when he hunted this unit until 2023. Most of these wells are well over 30 years old, most being drilled in the late 80's and early 90's, but there were many before this. The gas plant was built in the 60's. The oil and gas infrastructure hasn't changed much from 2003 to today. If anything, it is way cleaner.

You too saw more deer than I saw in almost two weeks in southern Colorado this year, 2nd season, and we had whiteout conditions on opening day to track in. A few points burned but found a nice 4x2 on the last day that will feed the family. Buddy in a different into also said bucks were scarce for them so Y’all found a honey hole! My family and myself have been hunting this unit for many years. The number of mature bucks are definitely declining. The major problems for this are predator management and like you said all of the tags they have been giving out trying to get rid of CWD.

    My home state and have hunted for many years. Mule deer are my favorite species to hunt and have harvested some very nice bucks. My personal opinion is that Colorado needs to go back to an antler point restriction, 3 points or better. Let the smaller bucks breed, this will create more deer and also this will allow them to mature and grow bigger antlers. The more we as hunters keep harvesting the spikes and fork horns, the buck to doe ratio declines and the number of deer declines due to them not being able to breed and mature. Thanks for the great video and information. Job well done Mathew. Enjoy those hunts with your father just like I have.

    • @phild9813
      @phild9813 6 місяців тому

      Meh. Antler restrictions seem to only put pressure on the best quality younger deer, the very ones you want to recruit into old age. I’d rather meat hunters take meat bucks and not force them to shoot the better quality deer.

    • @dmaes3169
      @dmaes3169 6 місяців тому

      @@phild9813 just like elk. Chase a 4 point bull or better. The spikes will branch if u let them. Shooting any buck with antlers doesn’t leave much around to breed. I’m all about the meat but just hunt a little harder and find a 3 point or better. Just as it use to be

    Imprint at a minimum?! Wow...I can't believe I heard Randy say that! The energy companies have a commitment to their shareholders and by state law wildlife is just something they have to work through just like knocking trees down when they build a road.. Road hunting? Back when Randy hunted the unit in 2003 these roads didn't exist and now I hear from resident hunters who complain the big bucks aren't there anymore. Well, look at how much country the roads have opened and how easy it is road hunt and kill a buck, any buck. I use their fuel so can't be hypocritical but if energy developers committed to locking the roads behind gates and kept road hunting to a minimum you might let some of the younger bucks grow into older age class bucks. Roads vs. big bucks...you can't have one with the other.

    To paraphrase Jurassic Park, "…I’ll tell you the problem with the (social media) power that you’re using here, it dosen't require any discipline from your audience to attain it. Your audience sees what you have done and tries to follow in your footsteps. They don't earn the knowledge themselves, and you take no responsibility for the mess you, and they, make. Your audience stands on your shoulders to accomplish things decades faster than they would on their own. Change is happening as so fast that before you even knew what damage you are doing to hunting across the west, you patent the content it and package it and slap it on a plastic lunch box and now you’re selling it (and your sponsors)…You and those like you were so preoccupied with making money doing something you love, you took no thought to stop and think if you should, or what the consequences would be. Point creep, tag price increase, increased hunter density in the wests best units, all can be laid at your feet. When all the good you do has crowded out the little guy from being able to participate in a decent annual hunt, what was it all for again?
