- There were some training sessions after Shamu Story that afternoon and for Shouka's turn they focused on the Stage Slide behavior. Shouka learns very quickly and the final approximation at 11:18 showed great progress compared to the first at 1:32! Shouka also demonstrates one of her signature Six Flags behaviors at 8:14, a Ventral Go-Away.

Wow, she did learn quickly. Thanks for sharing this, I always enjoy footage of training sessions :3
I remember watching shouka perform at six flags Discovery kingdom in Vallejo CA
That's awesome you got to see her then! She's not a large female but she has indeed grown.
I didn't know that about her stage slide! There was a similar behavior at Vallejo except using the center slideout so it was a very short run every time. It was also uncommon; I have not seen it since 2005. I'm sure Shouka will learn to get good runup in time, just needs more practice.
I'm sorry, I don't know how much progress she's made. I haven't heard about her working on the stage slide since this.
Yeah, at this rate it may be finished in no time! No problem! Me too, I always wondered how they trained the stage slide and many other behaviors.
Update: They worked on it earlier today during an educational presentation and she seems to be able to do it well! It's still rather slow but otherwise she can probably do it on her own without any help.
I'm glad she still makes them! They're adorable! :)
It's not just you! She's doing so good at SWC!
Yeah you can say they have; she still has her bird vocals which I heard a couple times when I was there. They're also able to ask for her bird vocals. I heard that she does make SWC vocals now too though.
I don't know if its just me but she seems more responsive at SWC, more willing to do behaviors!!
Actually they have been switching her signals since early September, maybe even earlier than that. The only signals she currently retains are for the SFDK-exclusive behaviors, like the one at 8:14.
wow, awesome video, Shouka looks awesome here, where do you store all your pictures? can hear camera shots in the background so was wondering if you share your pictures online?.
Have her vocalizations changed at all? I remember when I went to six flags she sounded like a bird but since she's been around other orcas lately I was wondering if they had changed?
Kalia was playing with the gates.
Last time I saw Shouka, it was back in February of 2002, when she was still at MLF. She has grown a LOT since then!
I do believe this stage slide behavior was part of her repertoire back then, but I guess they "let it slide" (pun intended) at Six Flags ;P Towards the end of the session, the trainer seems to take it one step further, by adding in the sD. However, Shouka has yet to put some more effort into her approach, to build speed.
How far along is this training currently?
Thank you! I have a Flickr and my username there is Echobeluga and I have a fair amount of photos up there. The camera you hear is actually Rukatheblackfish's camera. For everything I film, I don't have pictures for but she does. Hope that helps.
Seems like they've been introducing her to the SW signs!
I'm sure she is!
hahaha I was like it was Kalia for sure XD
Aw I think they were fine lol that's more like Keet if you ask me.
Do they use verbal cues with the orcas
Not that I know of.
Orcas know sign language from humans AMAZING
sometimes when they yell the orcas will yell back, idk if that's a verbal cue though
Hi
What's up
Shouka says: "You don't have enough badges to train me!"
