European Green Crab Early Detection and Monitoring

Coastal Restoration Society and Pacific Salmon Foundation have partnered to help communities across BC look out for European Green Crab.
These invasive species disrupt juvenile salmon habitat and destabilize marine and estuarine ecosystems. They are very resilient to temperature and ocean salinity changes, which has allowed them spread across the coast of British Columbia. Not all European green crabs are green in colour, but you can spot them through their five distinct marginal teeth on either side of the eye. With support from DFO’s Aquatic Invasive Species funding, our team is carrying out training programs and early detection monitoring surveys with coastal First Nations communities to minimize the spread of these non-native crabs.
