I just found a 2019 Lincoln MKC 2.0 this morning with 30k miles, apparently the dealer couldn't find the problem and fired the parts cannon. Had P0304, P0316 misfire on startup. Then I came across this video this afternoon 😂. I had a 350z that I found a slipped camshaft reluctor and then saw Bernie's video on it later that day. Talk about crazy or our phones are listen more than one out think
80,000 miles on my 2018 Edge 2.0, recently traded in on Subaru Ascent. Loved the Edge, drove across country, got $11,000 for trade, but wanted to get rid of it before the inevitable. There is a sticker on passenger side of engine indicating where manufactured. If made in Cleveland, you got the bad engine. If made in Valencia that’s the revised engine.
This is what i have done in the past. Trust me, it works. Take off the valve cover, and remove all the rockers. So that all the valves are closed. Remove all the spark plugs, and pressurized the cylinders with shop air, after taking off the radiator cap first. You see a geyser of water coming out, there's your bad cylinder.
Ecoboost is a great platform but it definitely has some limitations/ drawbacks. Personally I’ve owned a fiesta st with the 1.6 ecoboost for 6 years and I love the car. The 1.6 was very reliable for me however before my motor blew at 122k ( due to my stupidity ) I was starting to notice smoke and misfire on start up. However my car was tuned running 26 psi for over 100k miles, the 1.6 is the best ecoboost in my opinion/ experience. Great video , love the channel !
It amazes me in a world with all types of information on vehicles people still buy domestic and euro vehicles, but glad they do or mechanics would be out of business.
4.0 Toyotas do this cold start misfire due to a corroded HC, common enough as owners don’t change the super long life coolant. They often weep externally on the passenger side too
Turbo charge a tiny engine and this is what happens. Overboosted engines not properly taken care of will have these problems. Ford/chevy is dang near as bad as stelantis these days. I finally woke up and traded my F250 6.7 in on my ‘21 4Runner TRD ORP so I can do proper maintenance and have my Runner for 500k+ worry free miles.
U actually had the most reliable 4cyl EcoBoost they make. Outside of the initial focus RS head gasket fiasco, our dealer has only seen a few mustangs with incorrect valve train tolerances from factory and no major issues in the ranger/suv applications. The downside of the 2.3 in a mustang are usually the owners. Beat the crap out of the car and never do maintenance on time. The widespread issues are mostly on the 1.6, 1.5, and 2.0
this is great info for any engine! i always look at the freeze frame data to see when it set the misfire code (coldstarts). at jeep this is very common in the 2..0l and ive seen a handful of the 3.6l as well
Ford knew there was a problem with their open deck design but they were scratching their heads as to why, because other manufactures with the open deck were not having problems. They updated the design and were much better but still had some problems. Since the latest design, I haven't seen one problem with one.
Getting 2 HP per cubic inch of engine displacement? Insanity. It's amazing that these engines are as reliable as they are. Google the HP per cubic inch of many "high performance" cars, and you may just be surprised. No one expects that their Ferrari or Lamborghini will be trouble free for 100,000 miles, and most of their engine are putting out lower HP per cubic inch than the humble 1.5L Ford Escape engine....
Hybrids are very hard on their engines head gaskets, due to constant start/stopping and thermal cycling. The Prius engine is the same 4 cylinder that is also used in their non-hybrid cars, and there are no head gasket failures in the non hybrid applications.
Advice as an eco bust owner. Don’t put money into fixing it after 100k they are worth maybe 3 grand total. You can actually keep driving it a long time like that while you save your money for a new car. It can keep going for years with a little cold sputtering without tripping anything. Just top off the coolant. Mine also has a hard shift into 3rd that is common and has been going like that for years with no engine light
Why should they? These suckers keep buying their product. I'll never understand the idea of going all fanboy over a car brand, like it's football team.
If someone owns one of these engines, what should they do to prevent or prolong the inevitable? Routine oil changes, making sure not to go over 5k miles?
Hi guys love your videos and appreciate your knowledge. Please give me an answer to this as a am a routine maintenance follower. 2022 genesis g70 3.3TT. I have almost 60k and want to service the auto transmission. Should I do the flush and fill or just a 2x drain and fill? I’ve heard so much about flushing the transmission can be bad.
had a 2007 with a duratec v6 as did a relative hers lasted till just a few years ago and a couple hundred thousand miles. I got bored and sold mine but it was solid these are such great looking nice cars but those ecoboosts are awful the hybrids are here are ok
What's the reason for the open deck style? Cheaper to make? More metal is removed so it would require more CNC time. I do recall this happened on the Ford Focus RS line as well. There's a really solid video from Alex at Legit Street Cars from ~6 years ago about it.
We have seen lots of these also, but it's been a little while now. Ford trying to Compete with Hyundai in the bad engines department. I like the Kaiweets Articulating Borescope, think it was $107 or so.
Guys, try a Teslong NTS500B bore scope as it has a side view camera in addition to axial. No need for the mirror trick. The Teslong is Inexpensive but good image and robust. Very disappointing that customer's need to buy long-blocks or new engines. The blocks with the slots don't pass my common sense visual inspection. Ford should of known better.
I have that Teslong model but with the three cameras. Two side ones and the straight ahead one. I also have the articulating head one and they are both very nice.
So if I have a '16 1.6 Ecoboost with 90k on it, do I try to trade it in for a few grand right away or just drive it into the ground and hope I dodge this issue?
Had this happen on my 2018 Escape with the 2.0. Had 70k miles on it when it happened funny enough it was #3 cylinder and all the same symptoms. Ended up getting rid of that vehicle. I shouldn’t need a new motor at 70k. Never again will I buy a Ford or any new vehicle for that matter.
The new Milwaukee borescope has multiple illuminated lenses but it’s pricy. I have the older model that uses the mirrors also. Not ideal. I will be upgrading.
Stay away from any car with hybrid turbo ecoboost all wheel drive and cvt u don't need any of these things on any car more problems and more money to fix
Mostly because the Ford Engineers have designed a Repair plan. They removed some slots (different machining) that caused weaknesses in the head gasket. The poor gasket was dealt a bad hand.
I have owned many Ford cars, CUV & SUV's for years. Maintenance is key. The lowest mileage one had only 130k miles. I hate 4 cylinders, especially turbo vehicles. Nobody makes a good turbo vehicle. I do have an advantage as a semi retired auto tech with 57 years of experience.
@ Replacing front ball joints, tie rod ends, and brake rotors on yearly basis is not maintenance! Lol low performance Vulcan V6 engine blowing rings at 100k is not maintenance. Mating a 4-cylinder clutch to a high torque V6 engine is not maintenance… should I go on?
Oh Lord won't you buy me a 16oz ribeye my friends eat Delmonico and always get by I worked hard all my lifetime with no help from my friends so Lord won't you buy me a 16 oz ribeye.,.. that's it.. hahaha... My point is everything after covid is overpriced garbage...😊
Just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at the shop, really enjoy all of your videos.

Well even if ur engine didn't fail down the road, ur 6F35 transmission probably will.

I have a2.0 2015 ecoboost with 195k . The only problem so far was the evap system. I do a serious job of servicing this Escape.
It amazes me in a world with all types of information on vehicles people still buy domestic and euro vehicles, but glad they do or mechanics would be out of business.
Jaguars are my favorite.
lol
The Honda / Acura 3.5 engine and Toyota Tundra / Lexus 3.4 liter engine recall is no big issue?
@bobdobalini to them its like buying a toaster oven
Lol...
4.0 Toyotas do this cold start misfire due to a corroded HC, common enough as owners don’t change the super long life coolant. They often weep externally on the passenger side too
Bing a senior master ford tech i done them alot mostly cylinder 2 or 3
You should do a video about turning the compressor off overnight.
Please add visuals
That got my interest as well.
Almost all 4 cylinder ecoboom have blown head gasket, cracked head problem. Avoid Ford, my biggest mistake was buying a mustang Ecoboost
Only the 2.3 in certain applications ever had widespread failure
Turbo charge a tiny engine and this is what happens. Overboosted engines not properly taken care of will have these problems. Ford/chevy is dang near as bad as stelantis these days. Unfortunately, Ecoboom is already patented by General Motors with their Ecotec lineup.
May I suggest Ecodoom or Ecobust. Those are still available

@@sl0907of course. Mustang buyers who couldn’t afford the payment or insurance on a 5.0 so they beat the shit out of the 2.3.

Star of every video is that dog 🐕 makes a cameo appearance.
Ford has a class action lawsuit against them on this too
One of many that are well deserved.

They updated the design and were much better but still had some problems. Since the latest design, I haven't seen one problem with one.
i just got my new power probe DM300AUTO you showed its nice hopefully need it soon
You can get dual lens borescopes with a side lens.
Great video. There was a lot of good little tips from Sherwood and Chris.

Decades ago, the well know fact was that only the Japanese made really good 4 cyl engines. 2024 and it is still the case. US made the best 8 cyl.
Now, Toyota makes the best,4,6& 8 cylinder engines, IMO
I love my 2001 Toyota Tundra Access cab SR5 4.7, V8 Engine ❤️
That's a really good life advice,
Don't go around sticking your bore scope on every hole
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You should add Don't try to fix with Bars Leak or lower pressure rad cap.
Make a video on gen 3 Toyota Prius has similar problems.
Hybrids are very hard on their engines head gaskets, due to constant start/stopping and thermal cycling. The Prius engine is the same 4 cylinder that is also used in their non-hybrid cars, and there are no head gasket failures in the non hybrid applications.

Ford needs to pick up the tab on their garbage! But they won't!
Neither will any other manufacture.
Why should they? These suckers keep buying their product. I'll never understand the idea of going all fanboy over a car brand, like it's football team.
If u got p0316, p0302, p0303 and a low or empty coolant reservoir without external leaks, its almost always this problem.
If someone owns one of these engines, what should they do to prevent or prolong the inevitable? Routine oil changes, making sure not to go over 5k miles?

Disappointed that manufacturers cannot build a good product anymore.

People probably clear the code and then start them and warm them up before people come to buy it.
Had a 2020 ranger blown head gasket 30k on the clock.
2:23 It’s usually not a very good sign when there are many TSBs for an engine. 😁
Just replaced 2 2.7L eco boosts on ‘16 F-150’s for same issue
Mileage on those two?
How often do you change your oil?
Good stuff!
We have seen lots of these also, but it's been a little while now. Ford trying to Compete with Hyundai in the bad engines department. I like the Kaiweets Articulating Borescope, think it was $107 or so.
What size eco-boost engines do you find this problem the most?
Does the F150 with 2.7 L or 3.5 L seem to have this problem as well?

After over 100 years in business FORD still can't build a reliable durable engine.
thanks for sharing very helpful
GREAT INFO ❤
love your videos
Any benefit lowering the coolant cap pressure when new?
Lower pressure = lower boiling point
Air up the cylinder because it always tells the truth.
So, did they fix this problem between the '19 and '20 models? We have a 2020 Escape 1.5L with 40k miles on it no problems yet.
So if I have a '16 1.6 Ecoboost with 90k on it, do I try to trade it in for a few grand right away or just drive it into the ground and hope I dodge this issue?
Keep it and keep changing the oil every 5000 miles
Had this happen on my 2018 Escape with the 2.0. Had 70k miles on it when it happened funny enough it was #3 cylinder and all the same symptoms. Ended up getting rid of that vehicle. I shouldn’t need a new motor at 70k. Never again will I buy a Ford or any new vehicle for that matter.
It's not only Ford.
They had to shortblock our 2019.
Those nock names found on the road dead or fix or repair daily have been true for over a 100 years and is still valid
In all fairness, They ALL have problems. After 50 years as a tech, I know this.
What about 3.5 EcoBoost in expedition Timberline???
I guess you guys aren't seeing the 1lt 3pot over there. Just as bad if not worse.
Same thing for hyundai 😅
Engine can hydrolock if too much coolant gets in the cylinder.
P0316 misfire on startup
the guy next to you saying shut the hell up Sherwood you don't know what are taking about
The new Milwaukee borescope has multiple illuminated lenses but it’s pricy. I have the older model that uses the mirrors also. Not ideal. I will be upgrading.
At this point why would anyone buy a ecoboost? The few good ones you hear about are the exception not the rule..
What we forget is that cars are a disposable item like a light globe or toilet paper. We should just service then scrap at end of warranty.
Ford = Fix Or Repair Daily
Never buy a car with a new series engine, or any sort of "innovative" engine. They intend your breakdowns to be their testing.
Stay away from any car with hybrid turbo ecoboost all wheel drive and cvt u don't need any of these things on any car more problems and more money to fix
I wonder how dependable will Fords Mach E and Lightning motors compare to all of their ice engines
P0316
Ford should switch to air cooled engines. Maybe they could buy som old VW engines for their vehicles. Or, they can just do recalls.
Why not replace the gasket if the head is good?
I guess it’s like a timing belt and water pump. Replace every 100k km’s. Nice design ford. 🫣
Mostly because the Ford Engineers have designed a Repair plan. They removed some slots (different machining) that caused weaknesses in the head gasket. The poor gasket was dealt a bad hand.

This is the same on Stelantis Pentastar engine
For the last 40 years, Ford has had problems with building cars in general. 😂

You're about 10 years behind with your tech tip, the earlier models have a recall
Don't buy a ford pure and simple.................
Is that man or my granny
You don't have to go through all this bulshit you can take a look at the inside of the cylinder and it's all washed out 😊
watch the video again. they address that @ 7:37. BTW I had the exact same thought until I heard their explanation.
