Love's a real feeling, for sure. But it's very, very complex, likely the most complex I've known and studied of any human feelings.
It takes many forms and variations, in what we can perceive of it. It signposts many interactions with people we know, and is the building block or "coding language" of relationships, which structure how we interact with one another in general. Its such a large, nuanced spectrum, a very powerful feeling which has done many, many things under the guise of synonyms like "compassion" for humanity as a whole; its held the power of stopping wars single-handedly and starting them too. It's the reason we've survived, and the reason we continue to as social creatures. But what we see of love isn't even the full bigger picture; it's a concept so complex it branches off in thousands more ways internally, is assessed in every situation, embeds itself as a dependency in the key survival concepts of 'joy and suffering' and goes down as far as biopsychology and mechanisms deeply rooted in our meat hunk of a noggin.
No, in my opinion, shoving it aside and claiming its not real is not good for you; its a mediocre coping mechanism at best, and a failure at worst on your life's stake. The real mistake most people make, is that people think they fully understand it or that it's correct due to how 'right' it feels; it will never be fully understood no matter how many studies we make due to how subjective and unique it is to each person, and no emotion is ever fit to govern a mind alone or destabilize it as far as love may and has.
Hate and love are a duality. They're two sides of the same exact coin. Neither is more rational than the other, because they're intertwined closer than day and night. Neither is more right or just, and another mistake most people make is they form a taboo around hate alone and shun it as an emotion, degrading its importance to your every day life. They believe its counter-intuitive to hate people and accept those darker feelings of yourself. They mix up the truly irrational actions that result out of anger, with the emotion of "hate" and chastise it for being something it is not. Some just altogether refuse it to be part of themselves, and end up hurting themselves due to it. Hate is just as important as loving. You can't live properly without accepting that there are some things you hate, even about your most loved person. The fix to the mistake is accepting these darker emotions, because they exist for your survivals' sake; you aren't whole without them. If you can't understand hate and how to control it and coexist with it, then you won't ever be ready to love either. The healthiest possible relationship should be a perfect blend of rational love, and rational "hate", in the non-traditional flavor you're so familiar of. "Hate is a strong word..." It's really not. People are sensitive and make it so, then use terms like "dislike" to remove the humanity of a natural part of themselves; its purely a criminally mistreated and misunderstood term mapped by poor usage, expectation of irrationality and secondary emotions like anger, etc.
No deceit or lying of any form has ever helped a relationship; confronting the person you are with about these dark emotions is very much crucial. Hiding them just hurts the both of you, more so than repressing them and never questioning why they surface in the first place.
Rarely anyone ever experiences a calm life, because they bury this system into their subconscious, act as if they understood the single word "love" through its hollywood descriptions, ditch 'hate', and act impulsively. Then they question why its lead them down a wrong path. No matter how unpredictable it may seem, most have the answers of whether or not a partner is for them quite early on near the beginning of a relationship; its just a matter of being self-conscious and looking at it from a few different perspectives, then acting accordingly. Sometimes, in your case friend, acting patiently and giving time might've helped make that decision more clearly and allowed you two to develop as people. There's always some form of conscious thought that has to go down, to truly succeed a relationship. Always think. About what you do and feel, and how your peer behaves and feels too. Understanding that core side of yourself and your partner is vital to everything you'll do. Even if you feel you've no road to follow, all of this is applicable to every human you've met and befriended. Love isn't just found in romance and sex. It's much, much broader than that.
Learn how to love consciously, and accept your hate. It will develop you as a person further than you ever could've before.
I always hear songs dripping with love, appealing to those who obsess over it. I always see songs hinging off of depression and hate such as this, for those who've the need to be bitter. Extreme depictions like these may seem relatable at moments, but they make it easy to forget about that duality due to how focused they are on a single side of the spectrum. I haven't really ever seen a song that properly depicts what a healthy human being should truly feel with its ability to love and hate; only ever sickeningly ignorant love and blindly bitter hate who choose relatability over all and either sacrifice, or never realise, the potential to depict an important truth in relationships and people
