What a gent! I'm another who's love of the piano accordion started with Dermot back in the late sixties. The Irish dance music on his "Off to Dublin in the green" album (1967) is absolutely heavenly. So glad I got to see him perform a couple of times and his tunes still come out when I need a little lift. RIP.
I met Dermot in 1977 when I was playing in the resident band in Murray's of Lusk. He was a gent and wonderful player and singer. I had my electric accordion on stage and he allowed me to make a little duet on a song or two. A perfect gentleman.
I listen to him on live365 accordion radio when i was 14! now I've finally found most of his songs on youtube. just not Rosie and Johnny will you never go home again is gone! I finally got my first accordion when I was 20 and i still have it now and play it from time to time. i got a big red one!
Thanks for that Stephen. Dermot's unassuming relaxed personality comes across so well in that interview. A man of many talents on stage and on the playing field. Rest in Peace Dermot.
Dermot worked for Meath Co. Council in the 1950's . A group of us travelled on the railbus to Navan. He was great company. But one girl upset him ----- she taught it a complement --- " Dermot bring your old squeeze box along & give us an auld rasp on it" Dermot " How DARE you insult my accordion, it is NOT a squeeze box, & he cut her off. He remained friends with the rest of us. He was GIFTED.
I was in a group of 10 Irish Dancers chosen through audition to dance in a show on the opening night of RTÉ TV. It was pre-recorded in St. Stephen’s Green, and the music was provided by none other than the best piano accordionist ever Dermot O’Brien. The Limerick comedians Tom and Pascal were also part of that show. Eoghan O Cuinn
