Saw this band play all over Los Angeles. Best ever. One time Warne Marsh played on tenor and got a recording. John Anson Ford Theater was a great place to see jazz free !
Fantastic video...I REALLY idolize these guys, since I first heard of them in '73....Awesome, clear video too...I really enjoy the vocals by the "LA 4" on 'Star Eyes' with Supersax...One of my favorites in my collection..Thanks for posting!
I've always loved this group. I thought it was amazing and so respectful, to take Charlie "Bird" Parkers music an African American and play it note for note like that. That is truly amazing and honorable to me. Only a great group of Super Sax player's could do it, and they did it extremely well. I have always heard of this group do to a defunk radio stations in Detroit called WJZZ. I even had an album or two of theirs down through the years. Finally I got a chance to see the guys. Although I did know they were not African American. Just explaining by all means not complaining! Wow thank God for the Internet. I don't know there names individually, however there pledge to fame was to be known as Super Sax, and they will forever be in the annals of time as my Super Sax heroes! Well it's time for me to get up now and practice. I have a big recording session head of me!!!!
+Duane Parham Fred ATwood bass, John Dentz drums, Lou Levy piano,. Jay Migliori Tenor, Ray Reed Tenor, Med Flory as, Lannie Morgan as, Jack Nimitz bari, Conte Candoli tmpt. One of the classic formation of the group.
'SuperSax led by, 'Med Flory in their Heyday use to work LA's SFV Jazz Club scene 'Often... 'Toluca Lake & N Hollywood Ca, etc... 'Where, I was able to catch them & I'd aways stay for All 3 Sets... as, I couldn't leave.... They'd literally, give me 'gooseflesh' the entire evening.... 'They were so Tight & Smooth'...... 'Med Flory, Lanny Morgan, Lou Levy on piano... 'All of them were Superstar Musicians in their own Right ........ !!
The players being black or not have really nothing to do with anything in 1979 at all!! By that time we had Stan Getz, Pepper Adams, Phil Woods, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, and long list of others. Even in Bird's time he played Red Rodney on trumpet, Lenny Tristano, Dick Hyman on piano, and others.
The best west coast jazz musicians playing the most difficult charts in total sync. Nothing like it before or since. Greats, all of them: Condoli, Nimitz, Flory, Morgan. Just to name a few.
how good is it to see this great group of musicians enjoying this great setting.wat a place to play jazz.wat a lovely crowd of people.and of course terrific music.top post.
There were none better than Med Flory and his Supersax LA-based Jazz Band... 'Med Flory & Conte Candoli, Frankie Capp and perhaps a few others here go back to KTLA Ch 5 Steve Allen's Late Night Show Band & poss 'Jay Migliori when Terry Gibbs was Steve's Band director on 'Vibes... & a young Alan Broadbent on piano & Steve Allen Himself a fine Jazz pianist, composer & arranger.
They use to play at Donte's in North Hollywood on Lankershim periodically & Alphonse's on Riverside Dr. in Toluca Lake 'Always a Goose-flesh evening of 3 Sets for me.....
I saw these guys years ago at Donte's (unfortunately now closed) but what a great experience. I have a few of there albums, highly recommend them. Does anyone know if they still perform?
I seriously doubt it. I believe alto sax player Lanny Morgan is the only one left. Drummer John Dentz might still be around, but unfortunately he lost his hearing and doesn't play anymore.
@stephendm27 Used to called John Anson Ford theater. In Hollywood off the 101 and Cahuenga and they had many great concerts there. This was probably late 70's. Do a search on John Anson Ford theater supersax and you'll get a link to a review of the TV show.
I guess it's pretty annoying to play a great solo as such when the camera guy is in your face the whole time... I feel sorry for the trumpet player.. but what a great group - very tight!!
Rest in peace to my beloved late brother-in-law Jay Migliori of Super Sax...
One of the best !
Conte always was so "on" with Supersax,it must have been close to his heart .All of his sold are gems!!
I was lucky enough to see Supersax back in the 70's at Donte's in North Hollywood.

They're all fantastic, but Conte......Man.
Of all the appearances of Jack Nimitz wearing sun glasses, here's one where he's outside in the sun...no sun glasses!! R.I.P. Jack.
'Use to catch Jack Nimitz, often... 'Such a well seasoned passionate Player' !!

Caught 'Super Sax at 'Alphonse's Supper Club in Toluca Lake Ca a few times- 'Nirvana & Gooseflesh! So Tight- So Cool .........
I believe the date is 10/21/1979 and that this is from a live broadcast on KCET-TV, Los Angeles.
When Med Flory Co. worked the SFV Jazz Club scene like Donte's, Alphonse's on Riverside Drive it was Heaven on Earth.... a 3 set minimum 'Night
Amazing saw them play at Ford theater another time... but not his one
They use to play at Donte's in North Hollywood on Lankershim periodically & Alphonse's on Riverside Dr. in Toluca Lake 'Always a Goose-flesh evening of 3 Sets for me.....
This was live video from the John Anson Ford theater in 1978.

Histórico e inolvidable grupo!
Amazing. Flory's solo is great, actually, shouldn't be a surprise.
I never heard that band live, what a pity.
They were even better than you thought they be live. Plus Med told stories during the breaks.
This is the Bird standard "Star Eyes."

I think it used to renamed after originally being Pilgramage Theather. Just great to see all those jazz shows there

Sensacional!
Thats Ray Reed next to Med
Knew Ray since high school in '59. Always a great musician. RIP
