  • I am so excited to make this video and share with you my top 10 sewing essentials. If I had to make a full list I'd say that I have about 20-25 items that I love for sewing so this was really hard to narrow it down to just 10. If you'd like to see another video with the rest of my sewing essentials, leave a comment down below. I'm already planning to do a review video of my sewing machines that I use in my videos that I always get questions about. I'm so glad you all stopped by for another video.
    Does anyone else share some of the same favorites as me? What is your absolute favorite sewing notion or tool (other than you're sewing machine :) that you can't imagine sewing without?
    Enjoy and happy sewing/crafting!!

I’m grateful that you included where you purchased said items, because I plan on obtaining some of them for myself. Talk about ease of use! 👍. A few months ago I bought this Panasonic cordless iron and LOVE IT!!!!! I didn't opt for Panasonic's 360 degree model because I wanted to be able to set my iron down (like a normal iron) to adjust my fabric without having to put it in the recharging cradle. When I'm finished sewing, I shut off the base and let my iron cool before removing it from the cradle, to ensure that I don't forget to turn off my iron and potentially start a fire. (Call me overly cautious!) Also, this model was less expensive than Panasonic's 360 degree model. I think it's nicer looking also. 😀

      I know I love this iron so much too! Prices vary so much on amazon from day to day it’s crazy! Just last week the 360 model was cheaper then this one. I don’t get it-but it is what it is.

      Good to know thank you! It may just be a “who you ask” kinda scenario. I’ve heard it messes with machine timing from quite a few people and others say not to worry about it. I included it more as a protection for myself lol.

    I had an Ikea sit stand desk, but eventually realised it does not go low enough. Swapped it out for a Flexispot E7 sit stand desk base. This goes as low as 58cm up to 123cm. It adjusts for table lengths from 120 to 200cm and widths from 60-80cm. I reused my Ikea table top. It also has optional wheels which can be locked. (Their wheels fit the Ikea desk if you want to make it movable) The lower height is especially good for my serger as this has a higher sewing height than my sewing machine.

    I purchased the Lip Edge ruler. Could you please tell me where to buy the clear piece that you put on top. I can't seem to find that piece even when I went to O'lipfa website. Thanks for showing me an easier way to cut fabric with this ruler, as my old rulers tend to ship when I cut. But your idea of placing that clear ruler on top to prevent the blade hitting your hand Outstanding.

    Just a comment on the Olipfa ruler. There is one at the quilting group I go to, and most of the markings have worn off. I don't know if that is a common problem with them, but it is annoying.

    Great video. Just a quick question. I have a cutting mat that has warped in various places. How can I restore this or do I need to replace this. Can anyone help me with the question on this mat. Many thanks

    • @homemadeonourhomestead
      @homemadeonourhomestead  3 роки тому +2

      Good question. I think I may actually make a video on this as I have another cutting mat that’s in need of some TLC.
      Long story short, yes it can be made better. Is it 💯 perfect fix-no (sadly).
      You’ll place a towel on top of your cutting mat in the area where there is a warp you’d like to fix. Turn on your iron to about a medium heat without steam.
      When the iron is hot, you’ll run it over the area with the warp and apply pressure while doing so. Heat up the surrounding area as well. About a 12” radius around the warped spot.
      When the mat is hot to the touch, remove the iron and pressing cloth and quickly replace with large stacks of heavy books.
      You can use any other items you’d like that weigh quite a bit.
      You’ll repeat this process 3-5 times depending on how bad the warp is.
      I have found that if the warps are really bad, then (depending on the brand of the cutting mat), sometimes it’s easier to replace them.
      I hope this helps.
      Now I need to get on making a video for this :/

    Did you say “wax canvas?” What is that?

    Love the adjustable table. I’ll keep that in mind for the future, when we move.

    • @homemadeonourhomestead
      @homemadeonourhomestead  3 роки тому +1

      Waxed canvas is a waxed coated 10oz canvas material that people use to make bags, raincoats, boat covers and other items that you want a waterproof coating on.
      I do have an alternative to the wool pressing mat. I make my own pressing boards as well and am doing a video for that too! Stay tuned!
      It’s super simple to make and you can customize the size.
      And yes my height adjustable desk is so awesome. It’s nice to be able to sew standing up occasionally to give my back and legs a rest from sitting in the same spot

    These are great, but some are not actual essentials. More like useful tools that would make your sewing easier, maybe a bit faster, less annoyances. Essential examples would be any form of fabric cutters, a simple cutting board, needles, thread, etc. Things you can't sew without. But again, thanks.
