The saddest thing about Roger Troutman is he was killed by his own brother and bandmate Larry Troutman. And it happened just as Roger's career was getting a resurgence in the 90s working with a lot of West Coast artists like 2pac, Snoop and Dr. Dre. Very similar tragic ending as Marvin Gaye.
Many used the talkbox but Roger Troutman mastered the talkbox. We used to roller skate to this & many of the great song from Zapp/ Roger. This legend you couldn't go to a house party, b.b.q., roller rink, concert, club & others + rnb, hip hop radio station w/o hearing a Zapp/Roger songs or samples. Roger was a true show man he entertain the crowd, left the stage to go to meet the fans he gave hand shakes, hugs, dance with fans while performing & gave out autographs. Saw Zapp 4 times & never a bad show. The 5th time was planning to go but a week before he was coming back to MN he was killed by his brother & his brother then killed him self. I was wondering why Roger was coming to MN. often. He had a son here which became another Troutman tragedy a month later after Roger & Larry passing Roger son was killed coming out of a club he was performing at R.I.P. to the Troutmans . Few yrs later saw them again with Con-Funk-Shun, Cameo, Mary Jane Girls, Zapp did a good show but it wasn't the same with out Roger. Yes i'm a fan & have his records, some 12" singles & the 45 to More bounce pt.1 & 2 on it. I also have his last lp he produced for the movie A thin line between love & hate. Which he was on the song of the same name by the group H-Town. the sound track is a good one.
You are doing good research on my man Roger Troutman. Zapp & Roger...huge influence on hip hop. You can't finish with them until you listen to "Doo Wa Ditty", "In the Mix", "Heart Breaker", "Slow and Easy" and even "I Play the Talkbox".
Man it feels good to hear this again. Thanks for reacting! I was lucky enough to see them live 3 times here in Albuquerque. They got EVERYBODY movin'!! R.I.P. Roger
Classic Zapp & Roger JAM.
🤩❤❤❤ Zapp & Roger are GOLDEN👑
👍👍👍👍. There's never been any other artist or band going frwd to even come close to this type of funk. Reminds me of high school- we had Friday lunchtime dances in the quad. A student would play their music- everyone wld be jamming! made it really hard to go class after 😄
Yup they sample by tupac and other west coast rappers.
"Zapp' was Terry's nickname, as well the source of the band's name. Roger was big influence as a producer, performer, and a song writer as well. He was a huge influence in the use of the "Talk Box" patching it through mics as well as instruments. As a possible "First Time Hearing", Roger's 1984 "The Saga Continues", track 5, has "In the Midnight Hour" (feat The Mighty Clouds of Joy). This is a remake/reinterpretation of the Wilson Pickett (written by Wilson Pickett & Steve Cropper) originally recorded in May '65 (at the iconic "Stax Records" and released by Wilson Pickett in June '65, and hit #1 on the R&B Charts in Aug '65. It's currently (as of 05/20/2021) #135 on the "Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. BTW, check out the Dr Dre/Tupac "California Love" video and you'll see and hear Roger add his "touch", in a "Mad Max" type setting in the "Part 1" (aka bad dream) and sitting at a piano in the "Part 2" (aka House Party). Great stuff!
Blessings🙏🙏🙏
Zapp and Roger I can make you dance have you heard that one JJ.
Check out "A Touch Of Jazz" by Zapp and also "It's Alright" by Zapp with an IMMEDIATELY recognizable hook sampled by a well known iconic rapper. Just a little FYI.

I was on one of the MJ message boards - there was a link to an interview from one of his long-time friends - who said that this was one of Michael Jackson's favorite songs. If you love music - you HAVE love this one......ijs.
I bet Mike had a ridiculous routine to this song! I can’t even imagine.
@@TripSe7en_77 IKR? The friend said that it was one of the songs that he would play, that would get him hyped before he would go on stage...and that he loved dancing to it. I can only imagine....u KNOW it was fire!!

Not sure who, but I'm certain this was sampled by a rap artist -- perhaps Tupac???????
