Ahoj! I'm Jen, Native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Everyday we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

Já když ji poslouchám tak jsem hrdý na tu naši republiku.
Jako jo no 😅🥲. Snad se taky této zemi někdy odvděčím 🙏
Let's take a moment to appreciate Jen's sense of humor.
PS: Jen, now it's safe to say you are a proper CZECH. 😉
Absolutely agree!
everyone who gets how BRNO is unimportant is proper czech :D
Hey Jen, I’m a fellow native Californian English teacher who is planning on moving to Czech Republic soon. After seeing your IG story about the tanks being deployed, it was comforting to see you convincing me to still come! 😆 I have always had this draw to Europe, even as a kid. My ancestry way back traces back to there. I’ve dmed on IG if you check. Thank you so much for this video of encouragement at this time! 😊🙏🏻
By the way in Texas and Chicago is more than 1 million Czech and Moravian Americans // 6~7th generation and they still call themselves Czechs or Bohemians ...
Easy to contact them e.g. via sport organisation Sokol etc. I have a lot of blood relatives in Texas ...
Keeping my fingers crossed for you ...

from the exactly 3 times i've been in prague, it felt like home - instantly.
i'm absolutely literal about it, maybe it's bc i'm natively a slav, but once i stepped foot in the city i felt like i was living there for at least 3 lifetimes.
i wanna live there forever, but i have no options to relocate.
Maybe you lived here in one of your past lives;-)
Yes this is my experience too! I spent a month in Prague in 2019. I was enchanted the whole time and I've been thinking of living there ever since.
Why do you have no options?
If youre not in jail, you DO have options. Think positive
Hi Jen! we are in the process of moving to Prague following a job opportunity. I've found very hard to find channels like yours for families with kids (I might become the first one, who knows :D ). I have a school kid and it will be awesome if you invite to one of your videos to an expat mom who is already stablished in Prague, specially someone who doesn't speak the language and hear about their experience. I've learned a lot from your channel... BTW my daughter speaks spanish and she is learning english so an international school sounds like the best option for now :)🙂
Man I've always wondered where I could find americans or any other native english speakers here in Czechia. Cause I would love to talk to them irl instead of just online.
I love Your jokes about Brno :-) (I am from Prague :-) ) and I also really like how you beautifully put it with the rules. If we don't like a rule, if we not hurting/harassing anyone by breaking it, and no one is watching, we'll all collectively ignore it, and that often includes the police.

Jen, I hope you get your citizenship as I consider you as czech as they come. Your humor and your love for Czechia is clear and I could not be more proud to see you as a full czech citizen soon :)
To není země. To je zahrádka :-)
You just supplied me with extra reasons to move. I'm already on it. I will be there in summer of 2024

Na Vaše videa jsem přišel teprve nedávno, ale musím říct, že jste skvělá.
well played =). This video clearly shows that you actually already have become a Czech. Excellent knowledge of Czech realia and history, typical Czech sense of humour, there is no doubt that the citizenship exams were just a formality. Welcome aboard, my lady and keep doing these wonderful videos.

One of the best videos you produced! Bravo!
Thank you, Jen , for the great video and again reminding me of what an amazing place I am lucky to live in :)
Fun video! One of your best yet, Jen.
Don't be afraid to make a part 2! I loved this video!
Díky za vaše videa! :)
Tak příští týden.. love your vids, even "sour", yes we have to think about ourselves and fight bureaucracy, etc ... hope we get better; by the way you have a great overview and a "semi-functioning castle" it really was, to put it mildly. Keep it up dear Jen!!!
Thanks Jen for the great content as always and sharing your findings with good explanation and reasoning. I think the Zizkov tower is just over twice the height of the AZ Tower. (Brno)"Carlton dance"
However, it is doubtful whether the Žižkov tower is a building, "a structure with a roof and walls".
Thank you so much for your videos, as a Colombian doing my first steps in czech language, it's very encouraging to keep learning and to start to save some money to start the process to move there. 😊
Awesome. You don’t need to tell us why we should live in Czech. We know Jen. Love your vids. Been watching them since you started in lockdown in the UK. We were in Prague last week and look forward to being there on a more permanent basis soon. Keep doing your stuff.
Ahojda Jen. Moc Ti to sluší. Jsem Ti vděčný za to, jak mluvíš o mé zemi.
Hi Jen, you had your hair done! Nice job👍
Thank you for pointing out that Czech Republic has reached the Christ years! I see big things coming our way...

Right on! Most of your points are on point!
I stayed in a friend's panel flat for a few weeks. I really liked it. Everything was nearby within walking distance, even the subway, or the bus stop was 50 meters away if you didn't feel like walking.
As a Prague's resident, I love what cool tips you give to people. Absolutely great content and explain better than a rodily Cech. Thank you again for sharing all of your knowledge. Sending much love.

Ahoj Jen, you look great and happy today, you always make my day... :-)
Edit: In fact, it is quite easy to get gun permit, it is "shall" obtain, state has no say, like driving licence, you do the test and practical test, no hard criminal record, you have the gun licence. Czech have a lot of guns, but concealed carry in mandatory, so you do not see guns so often. As you live here, you can get it too, citizenship not required.
I wouldn't say it's quite easy, but if someone in the Czech Republic wants to have a gun it's not a problem for almost any law-abiding citizen
@@otakarsulc4686 no felony, 500USD, and show on the test that I know how to handle a gun and know the laws. in my opinion that's pretty easy. (future gun license holder maybe)
@@bmxrichard21 It depends on the person. There are 500 questions to learn, some people can do it without any problems, for others it is an insurmountable obstacle. Being clean, not having a criminal record, not being an alcoholic, not being a drug user, not having psychiatric problems? For some, it's a given, for others, it's a problem. Gun handling - they're much stricter than they used to be, and it's no exception that they throw out half the applicants... The shooting test itself is really easy. As I wrote, for most law abiding citizens, getting a firearms license is no problem. I wouldn't call it hard, but I wouldn't call it easy either, we don't hand them out like rolls or like Americans.
@@otakarsulc4686 yeah, I totally agree with this :-)
and it can be even harder for the immigrant because they don't know they can have their criminal record wiped clear, admit to drug use by answering leading questions by police, etc.
The correct description isn't probably quite easy, but just a middle difficult.
Remember my grandparents cottage.Great times.
Two less known Czech places straight from a fairy tale:
- Giacomo Casanova lived in Duchcov Chateau for 13 years: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchcov_Chateau
- Sir Edward Kelley, the famous alchemist, was imprisoned by emperor Rudolf II in Hněvín Castle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hn%C4%9Bv%C3%ADn_Castle (although the original castle was demolished after the Thirty Years' War, the current castle is a literal tourist attraction built shortly before World War I).

Ahoj Jen, thanks for really great video! :-)
Just for information - we don´t have any skyskaper, but we had! Check out a skyscaper in Zlín - it was built in 30s and it was the second highest building in Europe ;-)
BTW Be welcome in Zlín :-) You can see historical garden city there, but also quite unique rounded "paneláky" in the district Jižní Svahy. And much more... ;-)
As far as unique architecture of Zlín goes, I can recommend Letná district with unique small houses for workes in Baťa´s factory :-). Or architectual experiment called Colective House. But I think Zlín has much more to offer, that´s definitely true :-).
@@whealtea Zlín není pěkné město. A nemá skoro nic nabídnout pro turistu. Ale možná i skrz to stojí se tam zajet podívat. Aspoň na den :-)

Ok, it depends on the village, because the half of that village is the extended family. 🤣😂 I love that you mentioned Czech paradise because it is my home region. Even if I live in Prague, Czech paradise is my home forever. Good job as always.

Yeah, i am working near I.P.Pavlova and the magistrate (or more likely Prague 2 townhall) should really solve the situation with the trams there somehow. ;)
I’m no gun nut, but obtaining a gun license in the Czech Republic, all with concealed-carry permit, is about as difficult as getting a driver’s license.
Arguably, that’s part of why the country is relatively safe, though it’s a combination of factors.
What’s the difference between Czechia and Texas?
In Czechia, breastfeeding in public is OK; open carry is not.
That. Our concelaed carry rules are more permissive than many US states in fact.
I have been through the process and I would say that it is bit easier than driver's licence even. Then again, I do hate driving...
The difficulty is relative. It's still more difficult than most places than Jen has a reference for (in the US).
Well, even total idiot can have driver license, they literally give it to everyone who pays, so I hope obtaining a gun license is at least slightly harder. Some people have literally IQ of room temperature, they have no idea about basic mechanics and physics and still, they have driver license. I believe that even orangutan could obtain driver license in Czech Republic.
I would be a poor fit for a gun license. I'm very glad the potential attacker doesn't know that.
And I'd say among Czech gun license holders, the system helps a lot to have quite a lot of *responsible* gun owners while having minimal gun-crazed idiots armed.
lol, that jab at Drno 😁👌🏻
A přesto ten zbroják a zbraň vlastní úplný minimum lidí.
Btw v USA je pořízení zbraně výrazně jednodušší než v ČR. Stačí přijít do obchodu a koupit si ji. Bez ničeho, jen s občankou.

As an aside, I'd like to hear how the war has affected daily life for expats in Prague. Would that be an appropriate topic for your channel?
What place in Moravia did you choose? :)
Jen already made a video about the war, anyway, for an English-speaking person nothing has changed. People are now sensitive to Russian/Ukrainian language, which few people recognize.
btw. in the Czechia the war changed especially the mindset of the people and it can be seen in the laws, now covid is in the past because the war is more important.

Ahoj. Great video. I love Czech Republic for many of the same reasons. But I live in a panelaky in Ceske Budejovice 4-6 months of the year, when I am not in my "primary" residence in Cleveland, and I love the minimalism. I can leave all the clutter behind and live a minimalistic life in Ceske Budejovice, which I note does not make it into your videos. Dis Brno, but CB is a fantastic university town with amateur musicians jamming in the pubs and wonderful fish pond parks good for a stroll or bike ride. I like Prague, but I like it here better. I will keep watching and maybe watch some of the earlier videos to see if you get out of Prague.
The comparison of blocks of flats and IKEA is totally the higlight of this video😆
Im new to your channel and love your videos. My dream is to move to Prague. Problem is- I dont know where to begin. From necessary documents, to finding a job, to finding a place to live. It all seems so out of reach.
About those rules…
I would say, that most of them are ridiculously strickt or detailed not to demand exactly such behaviour, but to create a some sort of leverage if something gets out of hand…
Like if there is speed limit 50 kmh and you go 70 kmh. Radar by the road has limit probably 75 kmh, so it's fine…
BUT if you hit someone, then they'll measure the energy vectors and say, that you were driving roughly 15-25 kmh over speed limit, so consistently with a large difference - almost zero need for any further evidence, you're guilty…
Your hair is gorg. 💅
