finally some juan content yay
fresh hazelnuts are the best thing, the store bought ones taste like they have been drying in someones cellar for centuries.
I usually just pick mine up from the ground when they fall by themselves but we dont have as much shrubbery beneath our hazelnut so you can just grab em
If you don't have any real wild life pressure your method is great. In our area if you wait that long they are GONE!
I could listen to Juan’s kind voice all day!
Really well done instructional video - simple and to the point. Really hope people keep planting more hazel nuts. So many people just plant salad gardens that have no good caloric value to them.
More of Juan's wisdom please! Loved this, so much knowledge.
Thankyou for sharing the method for hazel nuts. I Have always loved a good nut harvest especially around the holiday season. Growing up in my grand father's orchards I always loved harvesting the cracking black walnuts from his small orchard.
Love how succinct this video is! Good mix up with the longer walkabout ones
"Addressing deez nuts". We see what you did there Juan.
Hi Juan! Good to see you! Thanks for the video all! 🙏🙏🙏
and to think just 2 weeks ago I found hazel on my property in Zone 5b Atlantic Canada which is still in what i call exploring phase; I feel honored to have Juan on for this one! Great vidya!
First time I've ever seen hazlenuts harvested, thank you!!
That is a beautiful haul of hazelnuts! Thanks for the tip.
Thank you!
I've never seen a natural hazelnut in a tree.
Now I know. Best of luck to you!
Hi Juan!
Thanks Juan!
I really look forward to more.
Thank you! I’ve needed this!
Thank you Juan and all!
Thanks Juan! So great to hear from you and see you here on this channel.
So awesome what a haul on them 😊 great job Juan!!!
Thanks Juan! Can’t wait to see more hazelnut videos!
Thanks Juan! Very informative!
thanks juan! great to see you :)
Great job Juan! I am looking forward to buying some hazels soon. I already have a spot planned for them. That's a great harvest!
Thanks Juan! My cat liked the crinkly sounds.
Happy hazel harvest! Thanks for the tip and good to meet Juan through video learning.
I'm thankful I got to harvest some hybrid hazels in my new neck of the woods. I let them cure for a week or two then husked them. Now I'll stratify some in the fridge and some boxed in a caged air-prune bed in the squirrel-dominated outdoors.
So glad to know the tree seedling growing is still fully in the flow in your life Robbie, I hope it only deepens!
Love this Juan-tent (like content, but with Juan)
Excellent video
Thanks Juan!
Nice tutorial!
G'day Juan, nice to meet you.
Looking forward for more hazelnut videos as I have started up a dozen hazel seedlings this year... And wow you have a kings harvest of hazels.
Hi Juan!! I have a few hazels..... want a LOT more! Can't wait to see this series of videos!
We'll share more. THey are spectacularly easy from seed so we'll keep helping folks feel how wonderful it is to work with these lovely plants.
Ordered some of your hazelnut seedlings. Excited to add them to my new food forest expansions.
Ooooh! Great to know & hazelnuts are on my want list! 🥰
Good tips! I’m so fortunate to have them naturally occurring here on my farm, and the wild bushes help me stocked while my planted ones are starting to bear. We got our first nuts this year from bushes that we planted in 2018.
Juan is great on camera.
great video!😁
Did Juan just "other fun ways of addressing 'deez nuts'" us? 😂
Great video!
Howdy Juan, how goes? First time I've seen you on this channel for more than a mention or in the background.
Also jealous of the harvest!!
So jealous! Can't wait for my hazel bushes to start producing! I am also interested in learning how to get the oil. Thanks for posting.
Yeah, just a few hazels.😂😂😊🤗
Thank you for sharing!
YES YES YES! This is the video I’ve been waiting for! 😀. Does Juan work in a medical field of some sort? He used the term “express” and made me wonder. Holy smokes that’s a nice nut harvest! Thanks guys!
He doesn't work in a medical field, but has a broad and rich use of language that we love :)
Thanks for the info--I'm excited to put it to use in a few years. Other than one that a bunny decided to nibble, all of my hazelnuts from you this spring have survived, including one that an arborist's truck ran over!
you guys hit the jack pot !! wish the wild hazels were that big, then they would be easier to harvest
This is a mixed patch, and some are definitely smaller than others, but still alll quite worth harvesting.
Thanks Juan, good job, there are hazelnuts that don’t look ripe on the floor, I’ve gathered some and put them on the windowsill…see what happens, last year they ripened some had nuts some didn’t
DEEZ NUTS, he said it, im happy
We have wild ones here the chippys get them all
But i might find a couple that are still raw but big enough to eat
They do taste good but have irritating hairs on the husk
Juan!!!!
I have 10 or so big hazelnut trees on my property I've kinda ignored. I'll have to check them out to see if I can get a decent harvest, thanks!
That's an interrogation I was having, eyeing the hazels in our hedge... last year I was too late...
Thanks , great Video I've been collecting wild hazelnuts and have been competing with wild life so some are still green. Been trying to leave some for later harvest hoping that they won't all be eaten by chipmunk!
We just keep planting more and hoping someday we'll get a huge harvest...
@@edibleacres I' ve been collecting wild hazelnuts to increase genetic varieties. I am competing with wild life, grounds maintenance crews and distance . I collect from mass , ny and maine.I saw that mark shepard harvests a ilttle earlier to compete with wild life. love doing this , i've been doing this for years, you and Akiva gave me new ideas with air pruned beds, hopefully I'll have greater sprout rate and survival rates. thanks for the videos
Nice one 😄 Hazelnuts struggle up here. but one of our neighbours bagged some from the mainland. I traded a lobster for a bag 😅
That would be a trade we'd go for in an instant, wow! Wish we weren't some 4000 miles away... even more in KM! :)
I can't wait till I can get to this stage. My seedlings that I got from you this spring are doing very well, even after horrible drought. I'm curious about the spacing, it seemed like Juan had his pretty closely spaced. What is your recommendation?
They can be as close as 3-4' in a row, with ideally 10-15' between rows. We plant pretty close and they don't seem to mind.
Thanks for this! I couldn't tell if the few I got on my new little hazelnut tree were done until they fell on the ground. Luckily the local squirrels don't know they are there yet but sure they will discover them in future years. Don't you have an issue with squirrels getting to them when they get really ripe like that? I've heard that can be an issue.
Squirrels really go hard on them when they feel safe, this is a protected area because it's our in the wide open.
I'm so happy to have a Juan video! But I, too, would like to know how to keep the nuts around long enough to ripen. I have 4 mature hazels producing well... but in my zone 5b NH garden, the squirrels are stripping the trees by early to mid August when the nuts and husks are pure green and very underripe. I'm planting more, hoping that if I grow enough, there will eventually be some left for me - but do you have any squirrel management tips?
We are in the same page... Thats why you are seeing us harvest at a friends place instead of ours! We could be hunting squirrels as a really good source of food but as of now we have access to another space with 300+ plants in an open field with easy picking so we are going that route. Plant more for sure, for so many reasons, and consider squirrel meat as a food source in the summer if you got to a place where the hazels represented a critical part of your diet. Otherwise let everyone have fun!
The Rutters (who ran Badgersett and wrote a book about hazels) say to pick when the husks are still green and the shell inside has started to turn brown. It's a delicate balance and I've sometimes picked too early just to keep the nuts out of varmints' mouths. Note that Badgersett is no longer in business, so I don't advise trying to order anything from them. Here's a direct quote I was able to find online: "Badgersett Hybrid bush Hazels are all currently hand-harvested approximately a week before they are ripe. They are then stored in a humid location while the nuts cure. "
Hi Juan, Not all of my hazels are rolling. Do you leave the non-rollers on the tree for later and pick the rollers first?
Might be a stupid question but I have always wondered if chickens can harvest their own hazelnuts? I.e. those that fall on the floor. Are they able to access the nut inside or is it a case of having to break them open for them to eat?
I am not sure, I suspect that unless the nut is cracked they wouldn't have access.
Thanks a lot
If I plant hazel nuts from seed does need grafting or not?
Can you tell me please, if I plant a Hazel whip, when will it be ready to coppice and harvest for tree hay (branches for feeding cows that are about the width for basket weaving)?
We don't have direct experience there so I'm not sure, but I would suspect after 10 years of growing a coppice would be stimulating for improved production and provide a lot of food!
@@edibleacres you have Hazel on your land. How long does it take to get to the point where you can cut branches off it?
Where do you get your onion sacks?
I forget now, but I believe I found an inexpensive place online a ways back.. Maybe a 50 pack somewhere on ebay?
I have some mature hazelnut trees but the whole thing (nut and husk) fall off the tree but don't come out easy like that. does that mean they are not ripe?
It could be that wild creatures are pulling them and leaving the 'duds'....
@@edibleacres i do have that too but mainly i just shake the shrub and they fall to the ground but don't come off easy. maybe they fall off because they are underdeveloped? also they are in part shade so they don't seem to ripen like yours do all at once and very dried up. maybe that causes issues
Who is Juan? Has he always been with you guys or is this new? I hadn’t heard of him before and you speak of him often now. I have not been on any one channel as much since all of the crazy started. Been getting back into canning and such. Great info.
@iliveinapark that is what I am saying. I haven’t been on here as much the past year or two and never heard of him before that. Was wondering how that came about.
@iliveinapark why would you take my question and twist it to a negative slant?
Juan has become a key member of our collective, we work together a few days a week now!
@@tagladyify I didn't take any of iliveinapark's comment to be negative. Maybe it's the "I for one" that sounded negative to you? I think that may just be their manner of speaking coming out, and it didn't sound at all negative to me. But I'm sorry to see that it struck a chord with you!
any tips for germinating goumi from seed other than 8 weeks cold stratification?
We've collected seed mid-summer when ripe and got it directly in soil so they didn't dry out. Seems like Autumn Olive and Goumi both don't like drying out much if it can be avoided... That said, I think fall sowing with nice winter protection makes sense...
@@edibleacres do you find that seed needs to be beneath soil to germinate then to retain moisture?
Ours had no chance, blue jays and other crites got them before they ripen.
We have had that experience many years. Our main crop at our 6 acre nursery was wiped out by squirrels. This is at a friends place who is wonderful in letting us pick after he's done.
Wow!😀 That's a ton of nuts!🌰🏆 What are you guys going to do with all those nuts? 🤔💖
We'll share more notes, but huge amounts for eating, many for seeds, and hopefully some hazelnut oil in our future...
“Deez Nutz.” Sorry. I had to.
This is a problem in my area. Many of the locals pick them way too early. They pick them when the outer layer is still bright green and firm. They also have to be handled with gloves because of the thorns. Just removing the nut from the plant is quite the ordeal. The locals say they’re trying to get them before the squirrels and blue jays.
There is a balance for sure, but if you go too too early there is no value to be had from the nuts since they won't ripen!
how much will cost for 25 seeds? Thanks
www.etsy.com/shop/RedTwigNursery - just learned about these folks, seems like a sweet nursery and they have hazel seed!!
Do you sell American Hazelnut seeds for planting?
We don't but we found these folks:
www.etsy.com/shop/RedTwigNursery
and they do!
Yeh just a few in the car,..... Definitely not too many 😅🙄 lol
Er, I have no idea how ripe my (first crop ever) hazelnuts got, because squirrels came and removed every single one - despite the green organza bags I hoped would disguise them. HOW are you not getting squirrel-plagues? How early can I pick the nuts to try to beat the squirrels?
Yeah I want to know this too! I just bought property with a bunch of hazels. I swear the squirrels took them all overnight.
This is another property with 300+ hazel bushes in an open field. Our small scale planting got hit hard. We keep planting more shrubs, and are planning to plant our highest quality and largest bearing nuts in an opening so in the future we get primary access to those and they squirrels can enjoy all the 'edge' plants!
@@edibleacres Sacrificial nuts, like it. Maybe I can cage a few inner branches and let them have the outer ones.
Just went out to harvest and found that the squirrels stole many of the nuts😔
Hey, you get some too, so thats good. They didn't steal anything, remember they are living and depending on the land fully, it is a first come and first served world in the wilds. Keep planting more and take part of your harvest as the joy of knowing you are supporting the life around you!
Thanks Juan!
Hi, Juan! How nice to see him starring in a video. I have never seen hazelnuts harvested, so this was new and interesting to me.
