despite my years of grappling, BJJ's contemporary leg lock game still looks like alien technology to me

elenchus A positional hierarchy approach to leglocking REALLY helps with this issue. Check out www.grapplearts.com/main-positions-modern-leglocking/

I had the SAME feeling. Maybe it would be nice to search for a teacher Who studies it to pass it to you. Some privates Maybe. Internet can make a confusion sometimes hahaha greetings from Brazil

You don't usually see someone go for a heel hook without controlling the leg getting attacked. I'm skeptical... Trying to berimbolo against a valid heel hook seems like a good way to lose a ligament.

I think the point is to not end up in your opponents attacking position in the first place, and the direction of your berimbolo roll negates any tourque on your knee.
I did feel like this technique is dangerously close to 411 - if I was the attacker, and I was aware of this counter, I may try to drag that leg through before or as he starts his berimbolo. There also might be a possibility to switch to some other leglock to leverage your opponent's direction of inversion to tap them.

@@NinjaofApathy there's counters to damn near everything so i consider this to be simply another skill to have as an option for a correcr scenario to try.

@@NinjaofApathy just look at the guy he is demonstrating it on. Legs completely wide open, zero control on the guys body. Nobody attacks a heel hook that way. Not saying you cant berimbolo from leg entanglement position but doubtful from a hook hook. I would be interested to see this live or hear from someone who has tried this.

@@to_a_nico For sure man! Agreed, this would be way harder to pull off if the attackers legs were clamped and he's already digging for heel. My impression was that this technique is more of an active counter to get to a dominant position and win the scramble for him controling your leg. In other words, it's not a last minute escape, more of an active counter option to utilize to stop the attacking position being solidified, and gain an ideal position in the process

@@NinjaofApathy exactly. So then, NOT a defense to a Heel Hook.
