  • Urban renewal in New Castle, PA displaces black families. Thankfully manufactured homes are built on an old baseball diamond and Gary is happy again.

I honestly do not see what is so "racist" about this (an overused term). They would not have bothered to do anything at all for these black families if they were truly "racist". This is standard procedure for any family that is to be relocated from unsafe housing.

My house was built a century and a half before I was born. Build it well, maintain it, replace items that are damaged or worn out. Keep it up-to-date with advances in safety technology.
Gary’s new house was made under the federal building program, Operation Warp Speed.

At first they speak of staggering heating costs and then they build a wooden house with walls as solid as those of a garden shed. You know what they say about shoes, it's better to buy an expensive pair once, than cheap shoes every now and then. The same applies for houses.

This era was brutal on older buildings by tearing them down without a second thought.

There was apparently more than "second thoughts" applied to the situation. Granted, many older structures fell to the revitalizer's wrecking ball, but many of those older structures were allowed to deteriorate beyond useful life by the neglect, greed and ignorance of their owners - not necessarily their occupants, but simply because they were not owner-occupied. They were occupied by renters who were not responsible for the upkeep and maintenance costs over the time that brought on their deterioration. Renters are not responsible for structural maintenance, electrical faults, plumbing deterioration, or anything else caused by age or the passage of time and fair use that brings on their general deterioration. That is the responsibility of their owner-landlords. When property is allowed to deteriorate by the "I don't give a rat's ass" method, instead of the "I take good care of my property" method, it's inevitable that at some point, the condition of the structure is going to deteriorate past the level of safe occupancy, and be declared unfit for human habitation. I have seen it happen continuously in Indianapolis, and other cities where I have lived, as well as in rural areas. Then bar is continually lowered for the level of acceptable quality, with relative rents falling likewise, until they cross each other, and the owner-landlords (frequently absentee landlords) who refuse to invest rental income into maintenance and general upkeep, allowing their structures to fall into a level of disrepair beyond financial reclamation which would keep them at a level of rental usage. Anything I have seen "reclaimed" by new owners has required such a significant level of investment that they are not rental property any longer, but owner-occupied. And the condition of the area in general has a lot to do with whether or not this even happens.
This of course displaces prior renters in any case, even if it does save the structure. There still needs to be replacement housing put into place for those who have been displaced. Not every old building is worthy of reclamation, just because it has been sitting in the same place for 75 or 100 years. There needs to be some value in its reclamation, beyond it just being an old house. Not everything can or should be saved. If that were the case, then we would quickly run out of usable land close to the places that need housing. It's all relative to its usefulness and the need for it to be there.

Fortunately, for Gary, he ran away from home and was adopted by the Jackson family, he went on to become a member of the musical family called The Jackson 5. The disappointments of his childhood may have gone on to Cloud his adulthood, monkeys, Ferris wheels and kids, but all in all he came out pretty good.

Apparently, these were to be temporary housing units where these families would live while the homes in their old neighborhood were rebuilt.

    Is Gary really Todd Bridges??

I knew Gary he passed away about 10 years ago from complications of diabetes. The irony is he never lived in those houses that were torn down or the temporary housing that was built. He lived in a stable two parent home and had seven siblings and was a graduate of California University of PA, his dad worked at a Rockwell steel plant in New Castle.

corkscrewfoley I think you misunderstood me, the kid in the film may resemble Todd Bridges but he was a local kid from the city about the film his name was Gary Fish.

corkscrewfoley No worries, I was just shocked to see my old friend in this film. I vaguely remember when that housing was built but I didn’t know that Gary had been a short film about them.
