It’s crazy to me to think she was Amy on Superstore longer than she was Ugly Betty, I feel like Ugly Betty went on for so much longer than it did - probably because of its impact
I think also because while Amy is a central character in superstore it is an ensemble cast Where as America was UGLY BETTY the name of the show, therefore far more of the show centred around her character
America is a prime example of a true progressive advocate. Not only is she heavily involved in politics, but she plugs politics into Superstore. Only those who are hip to it will even notice. Superstore is super political.
Her best role imo. Astrid is the most genuine and convincing fictional character I’ve ever seen, her outlook on life and the part of humanity she represents is brought to life so well by America to honestly make one of the most compelling characters ever, which of course a lot of that credit should also fall on the incredible writers of each HTTYD property she was in, electing to build and evolve her character with time, rather than keep her seemingly one dimensional in following her initial disposition throughout the whole franchise. The person Astrid becomes vs who she starts off as, while still remaining completely herself, just makes her one of the best written and performed fictional characters ever
I noticed that! Also Ana Ortiz who is played Hilda (Betty’s sister) on ugly Betty, played Claudia in superstore (one of the corporate people who want to close the store)

I just finished watching all of Ugly Betty as I never watched it when it was on TV. I looked to watch it on Disney+ only after I ugly cried after the last Superstore episode. It was exciting to see actors who were on both shows like Papi. Seeing Janet (Superstore) was a police officer in the kidnapping episode of UB. Then seeing Justina Machado as a superior in SS, but a cousin living in Mexico in UB. Also to see an accidental photo of Betty & Walter featured in the slide show in ep.1 of UB, then an accidental photo of Jonah & Amy in Amy's slide show for the final episode of SS was fantastic! Both shows were amazing.
I loved this, especially what America said about latino film stories. funny how all the white women wanted to talked about white feminist issues but when Issa talked about issues in black film they were SILENT!!! 💀💀
Yea that's true, but I also feel like they did what we WANT them to do. If they spoke up, they might have tried to invalidate it or dismiss it or try to make an explanation for it, instead of sitting there and LISTENING to a woman of color share her experiences. Now, yes, they could've voiced some sort of support, like a nod or smile or something, but we wouldn't have wanted them to talk over black & latina women's experiences and insights the way many people do all the time.
truuuu their next question was “so what’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you” after America was talking about roles among Black, Indigenous, API and other POC. 🙃

Everyone praising superstore what about betty? I love ugly betty. For exploreing alot of things including the LGBTQ community before it was such a wide and well known thing.
no one cares about lgbt for real, ppl just want likes and attention, thats why she will be remembered as amy from superstore, a strong female lead character without the crap ppl are trying to push over us
I love superstore. I think it has a small fanbase cause I don’t hear to many ppl talking bout it. Only show that I watch more than once. Ik a lot of ppl that didn’t find it funny but idk I laugh my but off every time I watch it.
I watched superstore when it came out, but I'm currently watching ugly betty for the first time, It did not click till right now that Amy and Betty are the same actress lol.
I love America but for some reason, I don't remember her voice sounding like that. I couldn't figure out why it was making me awkward until I realized... She sounds eerily like Candace Cameron Bure.
Her Superstore character kind left in a bad way, making it hard to like the character.....but I guess it doesn't matter since it seems like she's no longer on the show?
I disagree... I mean I understand it... She's scared that she drags him out there and then she doesn't wanna marry him there and then he's stranded in Cali with nothing... So I get it... I need her to come back in the finale and I need her and Jonah to get together💯
This was a complete lie loool...after watching superstore amys character was a door mat like betty....she never stood up for herself like betty....she makes dumb decisions and the jonah storyline was pathetic shouldn't have bothered and tbh her character on superstore was alot more frustrating than betty. And the main thing amy wanted was for EVERYONE to like her.
I'd have to respectfully disagree. Amy is such a relatable character. She's real, and she doesn't hold back. She has her flaws, but that's what makes her human. She's not one dimensional and maybe that's why some people didn't like the character.
@@101ladii I'm so sorry that you perceived her character in that way. I found her to be quite the opposite. Each to their own. I wish you well, and a Merry Christmas, Take care.

I don't think TV has any intentional consideration when it comes to the racial aspect of the casting. I remember ages ago when I watch Ugly Betty, I don't even have a slight peculiar feeling about Betty being latina. It goes the same with Kerry as Olivia Pope in Scandal. The casting feel just right. But when productions intentionally cast actors of color (especially in the latter era of grey's anatomy), it does not feel right. It feels forced, and unnatural, and restricting to the story telling.
I watched reruns of Family Ties and Growing Pains growing up and though I liked them and never thought about their color they still felt unrelatable to me. Shows like The Cosby Show and A Different World opened my eyes to a whole new world where I saw others like me and my family/friends; people who didn't just live in my little corner of the world. The "intentional" casting of a POC or more than one POC likely feels unnatural and restrictive to you because it isn't a reflection of yourself/your experience which...welcome to the world of most POC for the last 80 years. Btw...if you honestly think television/film doesn't intentionally cast characters based on race you might want to read articles and interviews by POC and non-POC on the matter because though its getting better its still an issue.
ditto to everything embrya26 said, but in addition, olivia pope is based on a real african american woman named judy smith, so they definitely went into that with a plan to cast a woman of color.
Right, I used to watch That's so Raven and The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air growing up and I never really thought about them being black. I liked the show, so i watched it.
America sounds exactly like Sophia Bush. They somehow resemble each other in other ways, too. They are very opinionated, entitled and even though I like both of them as actresses and love some of the characters they portrayed on TV, I feel like I wouldnt necessarily get along with them.
I know you don't think your comment is rooted in misogyny, but it definitely is. If you think America sounds entitled in this clip and if you don't like "opinionated' women, then that is definitely the case. Also, the irony in you making a comment like this after America spends the first minute of the clip talking about how she no longer feels a need to quiet down to get people to like her is not lost on me.
I know u think smth as well, but only I know how I meant it. Once again, its about the delivery and hers is just a little bit weird. Like Sophia´s, who I absolutely adore as Brooke Davis. Also, my opinion does not consist from this interview only. It was basically about Emily´s vocal disapprovement and about her unequal pay, yet America starts acting like its about her. And thats the problem. Please, please, please, youtube users, dont act like u know me and know what Im about, it sounds really ridicilous. I dont care about the topic, the way she talks - I would find it disturbing even if she had talked about shit ....literally.
Tone policing. Look it up, mate. It's not a good look. "I wish her DELIVERY was different...." "She says it the wrong way..." "She actually expresses her opinion but not in the way that I think is effective/appropriate." The fact that YOU are so tone deaf is so embarrassing.
By the sound I meant her same raspy voice like Sophia Bush has, of course. Her disturbing expressing herself actually takes into account her body language and look altogether. I think its called an ATTITUDE. It was never about her tone, but I guess you like pinpointing some words and twisting their meaning completely (and incorrectly for that matter), so in that case ...enjoy:)
The talent gets paid on what the audience is willing to watch. Same in sports. The talent can’t demand. They get paid what they are worth in the audience’s eyes..
I like how she had a different name badge every episode on Superstore.
most store workers do that lol
It’s crazy to me to think she was Amy on Superstore longer than she was Ugly Betty, I feel like Ugly Betty went on for so much longer than it did - probably because of its impact
Ugly betty has longer runtime compared to superstore.
Maybe because the episodes were longer. That was a very interesting observation. I never thought of it that way.
Ugly Betty is the best
I think also because while Amy is a central character in superstore it is an ensemble cast
Where as America was UGLY BETTY the name of the show, therefore far more of the show centred around her character
Ugly Betty ended because of the views, but I honestly believe ugly Betty was released at wrong timing
She's literally one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.
Nah not even close. But she’s definitely not ugly!
America is a prime example of a true progressive advocate. Not only is she heavily involved in politics, but she plugs politics into Superstore. Only those who are hip to it will even notice. Superstore is super political.
This just to show that braces don’t make a person ugly. If it did she wouldn’t be the main star in the show. Cause she had a nice face
She’s literally so naturally gorgeous. She was the 1st thick girl I saw on TV, who still got main roles
Mad respect for America and Issa doing it from LA and making it to Hollywood ...represent
She was the voice of Astrid on How To Train Your Dragon movies and several TV series...I don’t think she gets enough recognition for that
Her best role imo.
I like how they picked the same actor who played her dad on ugly better to play her dad on superstore when she goes to her parents house.
I noticed that! Also Ana Ortiz who is played Hilda (Betty’s sister) on ugly Betty, played Claudia in superstore (one of the corporate people who want to close the store)
I need this full rountable ASAP!
I literally scrolled down to the comment section just to say this. Step it up THR!
