Thank you so much for filming the daily life of a math phd student!!!!!!!!! I will start my applied math phd journey this fall but right now I am quite nervous and stressful. Your video really makes me feel more comfortable and relaxed!!!!
It’s weird how strongly I can relate to you: I’m a math major, also study music (piano), I take digital notes on my iPad (except that I use Notability haha), bit of a coffee junky too, and just the way you express yourself. I wish we could be friends. Greetings from Mexico :)
Hi Rafael :) That’s so cool! I’ve been practising piano a bit lately (although I can just play basic pieces). We can be internet friends at least. Maybe we will cross paths someday at a conference or something :)
I am also a fellow math phD student studying Partial Differential Equations! I found out about your channel recently and your channel seems pretty awesome! Since you like rep theory/lie algebra, my favorite group is SO(3) due to its extreme usefulness in physics. Favorite algebra book has to be Serge Lang Algebra.
@@ahlemmerah9027 Lol me too!! Do you also love Von Karman Evolutionary Equations, Well Posedness and Long Time Dynamics?! I also love the Schrodinger (big time in Quantum Mechanics!!) :)
@@joondochang742 my reaserch is about the different type of wave equations and nonlocal boundary condition, I love soo much the relation between my type of problems and their modelization .I study the well.posedness and the asymptotic behavior and the blow.up of solution in different type of nonlinear evolution equation like the elastic membrane and the plate .
Alright, you inspired me to try doing the Study Bunny/pomodoro thing and it's actually really helped my focus today. We'll see how that progresses over time, but I'm happy with it so far. Thanks for showing it off.
@@PastelAcademic absolutely, work from home has wreaked havoc on my studying. I don't do well without some kind of structure, and this seems to be helping with that.
@@PastelAcademic I actually have a question for you. I'm studying for my masters degree right now, and I started my thesis on Several Complex Variables. I need a textbook for Lie Algebras and Lie groups, i have seen them briefly in Lee's book on smooth manifolds. Should I stick with Lee or do you recommend something more comprehensive?
@@steveashkarian3201 Fulton and Harris have a pretty comprehensive book on them, and I personally quite like Humphrey's Introduction to Lie Algebras and Representation Theory. However these two are mostly from the algebraic, so I think if you use them with Lee, then you can get both the algebraic and the geometric point of view.
No, the blue one is Infinite Dimensional Lie Algebras by Kac and the one I'm flipping through is Lie Algebras by Humprheys. But I know Dummit and Foote well lol
@@PastelAcademic I’m an undergrad studying maths and I started my group theory course about a month ago, and I’m actually loving it, I’m thinking of doing it in the future (hopefully PhD too) and I can’t wait for Galois Theory next year. I have a question, what would you say were the most important things you did to pass the course?
@@abstractalgebrist251 Galois Theory is pretty fun! I think it's important to know the definitions well. It also really helps to talk about the proofs you wrote with your classmates, because sometimes they can catch a mistake you made, and you can help each other now. I know it's hard right now because of the pandemic, but even talking about it through Discord or something is useful I think.
how did you know you were good enough to do a maths phd? as someone that did badly during maths undergrad but still would like to do maths research at some point in my life i'm worried im just trying to do something that is only going to make me miserable
Glad to find a math PhD student on UA-cam ♥️
❤️💖
You are one of the less than a handful of math vloggers on youtube. Please do keep us posted haha!
I will! It's a pretty fun hobby that offsets the math. Thanks for the support! 😀💖
@@PastelAcademic yes we don't have many math vloggers on YT

I like the "walk to school" routine. Maybe before some end of day pastimes, like games, I should force myself to "walk back home " too.
Yeah that's a good idea. For some reason I never thought of that .
how is everything going now? good to see your videos and love them so much! 🤗
