Hiking to the Ancient Stone Structures | Mustatil موستاتيل | المشي لمسافات طويلة إلى الهياكل الحجرية

In the desert between Tayma and Al Ula, we find some ancient stone structures. Shaped like a keyhole, these are thought to be burial sites. Some date back to 5000 BC, or 7000 years old. These two stone structures are on the top of a sandstone mountain, the largest for tens of kilometers around. We cross fields of desert daisies, with translucent stones littering the ground. On the way to our campsite at the base of the mountain, we come across a desert fox. It quickly darts away and climbs the mountain in minutes. We quickly set up camp. The next morning, we start the hike. The mountain is mostly bare sandstone rock, at a pretty steep angle. Near the top, we have to cross around 20 meters of loose black rock. We get up, and relax for a bit while enjoying the view. We head to the stone structures. One is very well preserved, while the other is a bit more run-down. There are some petroglyphs on a slab of sandstone propped up against the first one. We hike down, and have to erect a makeshift awning with a big plastic tarp. The next morning, we pack up camp and head back to the road. The nearest tarmac is 60 kilometers away.

في الصحراء بين تيماء والعلا ، نجد بعض الهياكل الحجرية القديمة. على شكل ثقب المفتاح ، يُعتقد أن هذه مواقع دفن. يعود بعضها إلى 5000 قبل الميلاد ، أو 7000 سنة. يقع هذان الهيكلان الحجريان على قمة جبل من الحجر الرملي ، وهو الأكبر الذي يمتد لعشرات الكيلومترات حوله. نعبر حقول الإقحوانات الصحراوية ، وتتناثر الحجارة الشفافة على الأرض. في الطريق إلى موقع المخيم عند قاعدة الجبل ، صادفنا ثعلبًا صحراويًا. وسرعان ما تبتعد وتتسلق الجبل في دقائق. قمنا بسرعة بإعداد المعسكر. في صباح اليوم التالي ، نبدأ الرحلة. يتكون الجبل في الغالب من صخور من الحجر الرملي عارية ، ويمتد بزاوية شديدة الانحدار. بالقرب من القمة ، علينا عبور حوالي 20 مترًا من الصخور السوداء الفضفاضة. ننهض ونرتاح قليلاً أثناء الاستمتاع بالمنظر. نتجه إلى الهياكل الحجرية. يتم الحفاظ على أحدهما جيدًا ، بينما الآخر أكثر تداعيًا. توجد بعض النقوش الصخرية على لوح من الحجر الرملي مثبت على الأول. نرتحل ، وعلينا نصب مظلة مؤقتة بغطاء بلاستيكي كبير. في صباح اليوم التالي ، قمنا بحزم المخيم والعودة إلى الطريق. أقرب مدرج المطار 60 كيلومترا.

As an archaeologist, here are my comments: please, do NOT touch petroglyphs. These are very fragile especially when carved on sandstones. Besides, if we want to make any kind of analysis, what we will find is the residue from your fingers and your DNA. Same remark about the stone piles. An ancient or a modern stone pile cannot be differentiated. Thus, please, do not create modern structures on archaeological sites. This is confusing for archaeologist and future visitors. I know your aim is to advertise the heritage and broaden everyone's knowledge about the heritage, so it is important to stick to one rule: "Leave only your footprint". thank you

Hey, thanks for leaving your comment. It's always great hearing from experts. We will keep that in mind for the future. We did try to leave the place undisturbed, so we took down our rock pile. The larger one nearby was a single stone and was already there.

They seem to be depictions of people, instead of animals or hunting scenes.
