    Stuff we use:
    LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
    Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
    Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
    COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
    EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

    If he’s making so much more money as a DGA member, why be on the payment plan for the joining fee? I’m not being sarcastic, I’m serious. $13K is no joke but… I guess DGA isn’t really next level if you need to be on a payment plan for $13K. Congrats to him on something that appears to be of value to him professionally. But if you’re directing television shows and can’t afford $13K cash then??? If directors don’t get paid enough to put down $13K and be done with it, when do directors (in his circumstances) actually start getting paid? If your dentist rode a bike because they cannot afford a car, wouldn’t that seem strange to you? They graduated dental school and now they’re a dentist. Shouldn’t they be making more money? Similarly if someone is DGA and directing television shouldn’t $13K be no problem for that person? There are people without college degrees that can put down $13K cash and it is not a big deal for them. I understand the value of 0% financing if they don’t charge interest. I’ll gladly finance equipment at 0% but I’m also not a DGA director that is directing television shows. Am I missing something here? I’m asking seriously for myself and for other professionals. Many of us are financially broke as filmmakers but if you’re DGA and directing television and don’t have $13K does this mean that filmmakers, and directors are often broke for life? Serious question.

      I know a director of independent films ( very small scale stuff) who spent $70,000 on editing software. He was committed and just got it done

    • @LandofJapan
      @LandofJapan 2 роки тому +5

      Yes, 99% of filmmakers are broke for life. Because most filmmakers think about making a movie not the business of making a movie. As far as the payment plan thing. It depends on more factors than your ask-place of residence, spending habits, family, kids, etc. Everyone will be different. But I know people who make 100k a year and ask me for money because they don't manage their finances well.

      He said he had just joined the guild. I don’t know why it seems strange that he doesn’t just plop down $13K right away if he doesn’t have to.

      @@folkdude01 I respect your thoughts on this but if someone starts a new job that is at a higher, or one of the highest professional levels in any industry, their financial situation will likely be significantly better in 90 days or less. Concerning the network executives that are selling advertisements during the show or are selling subscriptions if it is a streaming streaming platform, do you think they’re scraping by month to month to pay their bills? Yet without good directors they won’t be able to sell ads. There is something in business called a sign-on-bonus and they’re not uncommon outside of the film and television industry. Are advertisers given a discount so that the director, cast and crew don’t have to be paid so much? I doubt it. If a network advertising executive is reading my comment and thinking “this guy knows nothing about nothing” then please educate me and help me and others understand why there isn’t enough money to go around. If I’m working on a project that I’m personally funding that is being released / distributed on UA-cam and I have fewer than 1,000 subscribers thus not qualifying me for ad revenue, then naturally I cannot afford to pay actors and crew because the project is negative, in the red, and is creating a financial hole in my wallet. All I can offer is titles, footage for actors, and IMDB credits. I’m tapped out. I can barely afford equipment. If my projects ever ever make money I’m glad to share profits with the hard working people who contributed to the project who also have their own bills to pay. However I’m not a television executive selling ads to major brands and I don’t have a subscription platform that generates revenue. This director’s financial situation seems to be reflective of many creative people’s situation financially speaking. Who knows. Maybe television networks and streaming platforms have razor thin margins or maybe they run financial deficits on a regular basis and thus there is no money to go around. Or perhaps if I ever make any money in filmmaking I be one of the best paying gigs in film, but you can screenshot this comment, print it and archive it because if I’m making any real money on the films that I write, direct, produce and finance, Lord willing, I guarantee you I’ll be spreading the wealth amongst the cast and crew without whom film projects would be impossible.

      @@soulbasedliving I understand that for some, filmmaking means the wold, beyond what is rational at times. I question my own financial rationality concerning filmmaking at times and the financial costs associated with it. But none of us are getting any younger, and the older we get, the harder it is to work 12, 14 and 16 hour days, thus I don’t want to be a broke old man living in or around LA waiting for my “big break” in film so that I can afford to get my car fixed. Perhaps there are more people struggling financially in the film industry than is publicly known but people are afraid to disclose it, and prefer instead to pretend to be getting paid well while in reality they can’t wait for craft services to start up so that they can eat breakfast. Maybe I should start a channel called “film confessions” that obscures identities and allows film professionals to share their stories and financial hardships so that people realize that they are not the only persons suffering financially while being employed full time in the film industry.

      @@maxsdad538 it's not my answer. It could be the answer of someone who thinks that that statue could be the pinnacle of their career though.
      I mentioned it as I remember reading - if I recall correctly - Giorgio Armani could not be awarded an oscar for best costumes as he was not part of a guild.
      The whole "you pay us money, we give you work" concept doesn't sit well with me.
