Imagine sitting down with a bowl of rice crispies only to start having flashbacks.
I do like that the actual medical table is different to the one that they recreated in the holodeck.
The lazy thing would have been just to re-use the same prop. Would have saved time and money. But, no, that one was just their crude attempt at recreating it, so wouldn't actually be entirely accurate and the real thing has to be a different prop to reflect that.
I was super-impressed by that, too when I watch it
Only thing is the real table is bigger, after they said in the holodeck that the first table was too big, after they agreed that it was long. And inclined. Very confusing but I agree it's a nice touch to use something different
@@cygnustsp It's possible that the table's position could be adjusted, so maybe for a few of the people it *was* inclined.
The scissor like object at 2:06 above Riker is the same as Worf described it .
I remember watching this when it aired. I was 8 years old and I had nightmares for weeks.
Yup same here.
For me, the only bit that freaked me out as a kid was the Ceti eel earwig-like creature coming out of Chekov's ear in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. But I got even more freaked out when the next meal I remember eating was Rotini pasta with beef, because the pasta shape reminded me of the creature 😂
@@TheRealmDrifter Dude that scene freaks me out as an adult still.
When i was about 23 at a night while i was sleeping, i had a strange apparition, something like a human-like figure in my bedroom. In the soft yellow-light that shimmered between the roller shutter window, i saw half in the dark, near my wardrobe and the window and my bed ca 2 meters removed to the window, a figure, or a shadow that was on the ground and slowly but then suddenly moved towards on me. I heard a deep voice or a moan that spoke to me, but i was petrified and couldn't utter a sound. At that moment i turned quikly the light on and it was gone. I panicked and screaming and was totylly scared. My parents came into my bedroom and asked why i screaming. I don't know what happening on that single night but today, years after sometimes get the feeling that it's probably my inner fears that i have in my mind.
It WAS a scary episode!
Thankfully, you have to be in space for that stuff to happen!
Riker sure does like starring at that portal. Just keep looking at it
He's high as fuck
Dude hasn't slept for days and has a massive cocktail of downers and uppers in his system
like a cat's anus
Star Trek was normally not known for sci-fi/horror. However, in my opinion, these are some of the most terrifying aliens created in the history of sci-fi. These aliens are basically gigantic crabs. That’s actually pretty darn terrifying!
Crustaceans are vicious.
Dr. Zoidberg respectfully disagrees…
Many of us can relate to this episode, as some of us have similar experiences.
Totally. And they cut off and reattach body parts while you sleep. Riker was wise not to ask the doctor if anything else was cut off and glued back.
These aliens are so cute for how sinister they seem
It still creeps me out to this day
No way I woulda been able to lay still like Riker did. I woulda woke up and started blasting lol
Lots of speaking extras in this episode. Interesting if there is a backstory to that.
These aliens sound a lot like the ones from Signs.
I did not think of that, but you're right.
Came here to say that
Great show filled with great actors
So those Aliens didn’t notice Riker was awake? But overall a very good episode despite the horror...
To be fair, they're aliens and alot happened offscreen. It's possible that the anesthetic had differing effects every time and was part of the experiments but the fact that Riker was not getting any REM sleep means that he was never fully asleep. He was at least partially awake the entire time. When they cut his arm off and put it back on. When they did other things. He might have even screamed and wailed in pain and horror during moments of awareness then stared back out blankly. All we know is Riker had no recollection of what happened. There was nothing to firmly indicate he was sound asleep. In fact, the women in the table next to him is staring out blankly and not blinking, meaning she's either dead or the medicine has a different effect than pure sleep.
They saw he was awake when he sat up.
Despite them having a night or an hour, theyve had riker 2-3 times already.. seems they aren't in the biggie rush with him... maybe just taking readings vs old readings
For the willing suspension of disbelief, I'm going to say that they don't understand enough about human physiology to know what "sleep" means to a human being. They may just assume that if a person lays still, they are "asleep".
Riker spent a very long time watching the portal.
God this was a good episode
So much for seeking out new civilizations...
I mean yes, these things curiosity caused them to do a great deal of harm, but surely the most advanced exploration ship in Starfleet would have the crew and capabilities to at least establish the bare-bones of a first contact with this race rather than just treat them like a threat and nothing else?
Consider the response from the flagship of the federation - not a dedicated science vessel in practice
Out of time. We are a pragmatic people :)
Two legged crabs….
An HP lovecraft inspired episode, mh ?
They do look like they could be related to the *Deep Ones*
They should have been like the Jawas from star wars, never seeing their face except the eyes.
If anyones seen SUPERNATURAL im thinking about what Dean did when he was abducted by "aliens."
Call me weird, but I find the aliens oddly soothing. Maybe I just like lying on a table while people perform operations on me.
Mm kay, Picard S3 E1, that clicketty click sound..
True
Ok I am watching this for the first time and I havent watched the rest of the episode. Why are the aliens keeping a subspace distortion/portal open in the cargo bay and want it to expand?
It's a window into our reality to allow them to probe our universe
It was such a fascinating concept, shame they just cast it aside from continuity.
In retrospect, this is one of The Next Degeneration's finest episodes: one of the few to display the terrifying mystery of space.
I don't know if "The Next Degeneration" was meant to be satire or just a typo, but thank you for making me laugh.
@@davidlordofthesquirrels9839 Satire. An ex-fan displaying disrespect.
@@googleisevil4531 gotcha, thanks.
@@googleisevil4531 pure curiosity: how come?
@@Intrafacial86 Star Dreck and I broke up 23 years ago over philosophical disagreements. I like only TOS and certain episodes of TNG, DS9 and VOY. I ignore all subsequent series.
didn't the aliens appear to have inferior tech to the enterprise?
