- This is a novel way to observe wild birds. This feeder works with sash style double-hung windows.
Birds come into the room to feed, while you observe them through a transparent panel.
SAFETY FIRST: This requires you to open your window to accommodate the feeder. There are specially designed sash-locks that will secure your window. OR, consider removing the feeder and closing the window when you're not at home or at night.
SOURCE: This is where I got this feeder, there are many other variations on the market. This is not an affiliate link: hibirdie.com/p...
LIGHTING: I added battery powered LED light wands to the sides so the children could see the feeding birds better, and it worked!
This is the light want that I used for this demonstration (affiliate link)

FEED FOR BLUEBIRDS: I found that by offering black soldier fly larvae, I can get Northern Bluebirds to come to the feeders. This is an affiliate link to the black soldier fly larvae that I use: amzn.to/3J51vsz
MOST DIVERSE FEED: You will attract the widest variety of songbirds with Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (affiliate link) amzn.to/4cHy4dQ
Save money and get some at Tractor Supply or your local garden store.
First! Hey Fred, looking forward to watching the video :) I Know it will be good 👍😁😎🐝
Have a great day Fred :)
Grayson, you never cease to impress with your rapid keyboard responses! Happy Thursday! :)
Three observation hives and now one observation bird feeder. I wonder, assuming someone plans to order one or so, if placing a bird feeder near the location prior to its arrival would speed up visitation?
Thanks Fred!!
Thanks for watching :) I hope you enjoyed it :)
If you add a mirror/privacy film, you can make it an one way mirror.
that's a great idea..
Thank you all of your expertise ❤
Thank you for watching and taking a moment to comment :)
Thanks Fred!
You're welcome :)
Fantastic job 😀
Thanks, Darren!
Since you love the Bluebirds, last year I discovered that Premium Finch Lovers Blend from 3D product at Walmart actually attracts Bluebirds here in Tennessee! They absolutely love it and I've had 3-4 bluebird on the feeder at one time!
Hi Mike, what specifically do you see the Bluebirds eating from that mix? Thanks :)
now it is time to hook up price is right mini tv and see if the birds spend more time like at the gas pumps
Really great review and video Fred!
Thank you!
Thanks Fred.
Looks pretty nice! I wonder how it would work with one-way glass.
You never know.
Wow, that looks great. I would love to have something like this. It would have to go in on a ground level window, and that makes me wonder if I will have more of a squirrel problem. While on the subject of indoor nature observation, do you have an opinion or thoughts on indoor observation bee hives? Particularly the BEEcosystem's indoor wall mountable beehives?
ok, the only issue I had with the Beecosystem is their profound dishonesty as they attempted to promote their product. Photoshopped systems spreading across walls. Aside from that initial frustration, it's not a good design in my opinion. More cohesive units that are closer to 10 gallon spaces are far more useful for the bees. I'll end my complaints there.
@@FrederickDunn Thanks, it is tempting offer especially to beginners like wanting to get into bee keeping, but seems to be a recipe for disaster. I'll just keep dreaming of one day having an observation hive in the comfort of my home. :)
Just got mine in the mail. It came with weatherstripping and a separate role of tape and I'm not sure what the tape is for. It's not mentioned in the instructions or any videos I can find but it's pictured in the instruction packet. 🤷
Maybe for weather proofing around the window? I have no idea.
@@FrederickDunn huh ok
Thank you again for the video it's very helpful
I'm writing this as I start this video. I almost bought this the other day and decided it was too new to take a chance on. This review may come in handy to help me decide!
I understand there is quite a range in quality among these units, but there are plenty that work as described. I hope you get a good one. This one surprised me as I was prepared to have it fail on some level.
@@FrederickDunn Just finished the video, great work!
I have 6 and 7 year olds and I think they'd love to have this in their room. Luckily they like to read books so I could imagine them patiently hanging out while reading and really enjoying when birds pop in and out!
Can you still lock the window?
No, and that's on issue... you need to purchase an aftermarket lock for your sliding window casing. Or, you'd probably want to take it down overnight and reinstall during the day.
🇱🇨👍🏽❤️
Nice. I'd been wondering about those types of feeders. Thanks.
One of the grandsons is back today, he's never one to sit still until this feeder was installed. What an unexpected benefit. :)
Hiw did you keep the eindow down on top of the box ? It seems like my window didn't have enough pressure to keep it heald in well.
That's going to be case by case, you can use double stick tape? I'm sure there are a lot of window differences, and some of their edging may be anti-stick which works well for window movement, but not for holding a feeder in well. Maybe a strip of soft rubber would give it more "grab".
