  • This spring, First Lite's Paul Peterson drew one of the most coveted spring black bear tags in the lower 48. Though Paul is a former elk guide, this was the Wisconsin native’s first bruin hunt. “Ursus Idaho” tells the story of his memorable trip in the rugged country of his adopted home state.
Check out the gear Paul used on the hunt at bit.ly/2FfmR6k

Maybe the shot didn't work out as planned, but you stuck with it and recovered the animal. That was good. The haters are gonna hate no matter if it drops on the spot or runs for miles, that's what they do.

Dude! So stoked for you bud! Nothing like your first bear. I know exactly what you mean by laying your hands on them for the first time. It's just different. Nothing but respect for the bruins. Congratulations!

Holy shit you're a brave man walking about with your javelin bipod like that. Love mine but it fell off once and took me about 6 hours to find it the day after never again. Good bear !

The skull is in my window, the hide is a rug and the meat is fantastic. I use the ground meat for breakfast sausage, spaghetti, and more. The roasts are excellent for pulled sandwich options.

Paul was shooting a Tikka T3 Lite with a Vortex Viper Scope and hand loaded 168gr. bullets we here at the office affectionately call "Buck Nastys." As a note, this is a different rifle than the Roberts Paul originally intended to use and described in early gear list video.

Be careful, it’s all calculated risk. Safeties fail and friends have killed best buds because they fell/tripped hiking chambered.

J McMath true you have to be with competent people who are competent with their weapons I’ve spent over 20 years with a live round in my chamber sleeping with it eating in dining halls in Iraq and Afghanistan and other unpleasantrys in that time I only saw 2 accidentally discharged weapons and they were new cherry recruits and in 47 + years of hunting have never flagged anyone with my weapon like rule # 1 don’t point your gun at anything you don’t want to destroy my thought is if a hunter has to wait to chamber a round before shooting as some of these ex Minnesota big time hunters do it makes liberals want to push maybe we should not let anyone chamber a round until ready to shoot, I know sounds crazy but liberals are crazy and that gives them ammunition. If you fall you hold on to your weapon hunter cradle style and know where your muzzle is at all times thanks for the concern though
