    This is truly a geothermal cooling system. The in-ground heat pumps have better efficiency than using ambient air but the much higher installation costs make the payback period much longer.
    I've wanted to use 55 degree ground water to provide chilled water for air conditioning of an off grid home, using solar power to pump the closed loop water. The underground concrete cistern for water storage and thermal storage is brilliant.

I am having a really hard time trying to sort through all of the almost good enough cooling systems on UA-cam. I am looking to have a green house near my home in California and am very concerned about too much heat in the summer. Do you have any recommendations for how to keep approximately 25’-L x 60’-W x 12’-H cool? I would really like to have a geothermal system but most of the videos I’ve watched don’t instill me with a lot of confidence in keeping the Air temp below 80º-85ºf. Absolutely fantastic to see this system coming today - such a huge scale and thorough design.
    Question:
    How do you monitor water level in the cisterns?
    Comment:
    The could are a great idea but having them tightly wound (I.e. little separation between the different 'passes' of the coil) is not ideal from a heat transferperspective.

    • @tidalgardens

    I'm a big fan of yours solutions and the way you translated all of your previous knowledge always trying to eliminate old mistakes and using the state of art in equipments.im curious to know how do you monitor leakages in the cooling hoses inside the rain taks ? Can you enter in the tank to inspect the coils ? Do you also have a temp sensor inside the rain tank as well water level sensors ? I saw that you live in a super cold place. Do you have sensors controlling the internal building temperature opening windows to renovate the room air and temperature ? Thanks from a coral lover from Rio de Janeiro Brazil

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому

      So the chances of a leak in the coil is REALLY unlikely, but if there was one, I would expect to see a pressure drop in the system which would be picked up by both gauges as well as the pump display. It is possible to get into the cisterns with a ladder if you pump all the water out. As for air, we have four air exchangers called Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) that constantly swap the inside air with outside air without losing a lot of heat. They work GREAT in the winter to keep the air inside the building dry.

    Such a great cooling system. We should be doing this in Australia with our homes.
    I've always been told that using rainwater on RO is difficult due to biofouling. IE since the water isn't chlorinated you get bacteria growth clogging everything up. Has that been an issue?

    • @tidalgardens

    Any reason you haven't tried use PT-1000 temperature probes with calibration? It basically eliminates the false resistance in the cables. Since you spoke about different readings, it feels like most of the temperature probes are PT-100, which is common in commercial grade equipment.
    And since you mentioned clean wire management. Have you've installed a lot of back-up piping between the house and green house for future wiring/plumbing that may come? For example, a 'cable grave'.

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому

      Funny you mention the future/just in case piping. I requested several extras. Over the construction of this place the project scope expanded and we used every single one of them. My plumber was telling me the other day had he known that this place would be more research lab than warehouse he would have installed a dozen more.

  • @ArrickthaRed

    This is a great behind the scenes look into the systems. You can tell you really enjoy the industrial side of things. One question. Since you have the new building do you think you will ever migrate all the livestock from the greenhouse over to the new building in order to redo the greenhouse systems to make them more efficient?

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому

      My family and staff here roll their eyes when I talk about it, but yes I would like to re-work all of the systems in the greenhouse. I would probably NOT move everything over to the new building to do so just to keep things over there as clean as possible, but there is some serious room for improvement in the greenhouse. Having said that, the existing greenhouse has some amazing state of the art tech in there, but it also has 12 years of older infrastructure that I would like to re-work.

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому +1

      It is unlikely. The ground is constantly soaking up the heat, and the bottom of the cistern is over 12' down in the ground. Another way to look at it is to consider the amount of BTU's needed to heat 10,000 gallons of water sitting down in the ground from 55 degrees F to 75 degrees F. One BTU is needed to raise one POUND of water by 1 degree. Fresh water is a little over 8 lbs per gallon. So... 20 degrees x 8 pounds x 10,000 gallons = 1.6 million BTU and that is not counting the ground itself soaking up the heat away from the water underground. Someone can double check the math but it is in that ball park.

    Hi Than! Amazing setup here! Funny enough... Randy and Ryan from BRS mentioned to reach out to you about geothermal heating and cooling as they recalled you being the only one out there doing this. I live here in Florida and I have a 500 gallon outdoor system that I have been racking my head on how to geothermal cool it. What are you using on both sides as your heat exchange? Copper in the ground and looped pex inside your sumps? Thanks bud! Your videos are truly inspiring!

    • @billforigno
      @billforigno 4 роки тому +1

      At 3:50 he said "about 1000 ft of pex coils down there." I'm guessing he wouldn't want copper in the cement cisterns he's using for RO/DI source water. I can also only assume he isn't running his aquariums' salt water through the geo cooling plumbing given those brass junctions and that specialized pressure actuated pump. In that case I guess the fluid in the cooling lines is isolated like you noted. I then wonder what would make a good fluid in a cooling loop other than water.

    • @rajlall5253
      @rajlall5253 4 роки тому

      @@billforigno Good Call out! I totally missed that was in the cisterns... I thought it was what he mentioned was in the sump as the exchanger. I think glycol was what I read was the best heat exchange fluid if its a closed loop... but still scary to put anything but RO running through the lines in the case of leaks. The other way you would think is to send the tank salt water itself through the lines... but again... so much risk if any leaks/seepage occurs.

  • @CharlesLales
    @CharlesLales 4 роки тому

    Hi, one more time, thanks for sharing so informative video! Regarding your problematic of cooling / heating fighting, relay servitude may end up with non-convergent oscillation. You give prio to heat over cool, is it suitable with corals? (no exp. in this domain..) I wonder if, based on room temp, you can't predict normal duration between cooling and heating, if it repeat it, and compare with what is currently happening. If it is shorter, then it detects what could be an issue with probes. ;-)

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому +1

      This video makes it sound like this cooling system is all encompassing, but in reality there are multiple systems at work to cool the tanks down. We went over 10 years using other methods to cool the greenhouse tanks down and this geothermal system is just another layer of cooling technology available. The hope is we won't even need this system to run very much if the other systems can handle the heat during the summer. It is only when we have multiple 90-degree days in a row that they tend to get overwhelmed and a system like this will help a lot.
      The potential conflict overlap only happens on very goofy times where the temperature is just right outside that the systems will get confused. Normally either it is way too cold out or way too hot out.

    That's pretty amazing Than. Tell me, since it's a geothermal system officially, does the state of Ohio offer tax incentives and cost share programs for Geo? NY does and a few years ago i had installed a 14Kw solar system. All the incentive programs paid for more than half the cost of the system. That being said, do you plan on a solar system for your buildings? I would next like to invest in a couple of vertical wind turbines .

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому +2

      I don't think there are any incentives right now unfortunately. Previously there was an incentive program for electrical reduction through the energy company but they suspended it a few months ago. As for solar, it is something I would like to do in a couple of years but before I do any project like that I want to get done with all the aquariums. Our electric bill right now is pretty manageable but once everything is up and running solar will look better and better.

      Tidal Gardens , so you are running cistern water through the PEX coils located in your sump?

    Geothermal heating/cooling is amazing...it should be used more for residential use than it currently is.

      Things like radiant floor heating and geothermal is very uncommon but after having used it personally I would never do a house or building without it. It is so nice.

    This is awsome! I could also do this on a smaller scale? I bought a new house with a barn for expanding my hobby to more professional here in the Netherlands.

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому +1

      You could do something similar just by burying the tubing if the ground stays cool. In the Netherlands it is probably fine, but some geographies the ground temperature is hot. Also, it is far less expensive to do a single aquarium rather than having a system that has to route cooling to 9 different systems on demand.

      @@tidalgardens we don't have a hot climate here.. I also will collect rainwater. I think I will have arround 3 coral systems in there and 1 fish system

    This facility must of cost a fortune to build....I hope your doing WWC kind of business to pay for it. Good luck I hope you do well the facility is gorgeous. I wish I lived closer to take a look at everything you are doing I’m an electrician I would love to see how they did everything.

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому

      Our first electricians goofed up a lot of stuff that is slowly getting cleaned up by a different company. Unfortunately I don't know electrical like I know plumbing so I was not able to see all the stuff they did wrong as they were doing it.

    Is Grundfoss pump you are using is that stainless ??

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому +1

      No, these are iron. Stainless would be better but it doesn't impact performance.

  • @garrycole9187

    how much does it compare in cost compared to your old system?

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому

      The old system was just the cost of the tubing basically and we ran water through it like a hose, so in the dead of summer we watered the lawn a lot. This system is a lot more expensive but it doesn't use any water since it is a closed loop.

    Have you thought about adding solar panels To cut down on Electra city use

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому

      It is something I am going to look at in a year or two. Right now our electrical usage is manageable but as we fully build out the aquarium systems solar is going to look more and more attractive.

    Using copper pipes not a problem? I’m new to the hobby.

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  4 роки тому

      The water running inside the pipes is fresh water as a closed system so there is no salt water from the aquariums that comes in contact with the copper components of the heating or cooling system.
