It has taken me almost five decades to understand this classic record!!! I could hear now the subtle art form, the conceptual side of it, Lou's touch with miniminal classic music fused with Rock and Roll..
Are you sure? Check out Lou's (Steve Hunter, et al) intro on Sweet Jane. Rock'n'Roll Animal. live album. I was lucky enough to see them at Charlton. Crikey, someone. please say which year that was. Thanks.
Brilliant song, a quite astoundingly brilliant album. A certified member of my top 20 albums ever! I agree, the 2nd part of this song is particularly haunting! "but you only made love to one of us a-a-a-ah Jim, how could you treat me this way?"

So good. One of my top 20 albums ever. It's dark, nasty, spiteful, mean, and......absolutely glorious. "And when you're filled up to here with hate, beat her black and blue and get it straight"
I loved this album when I first heard it. Yes it is depressing but it's so good and ambitious. I love the fact Lou went with what he wanted to do instead of making another pop record. I have a massive respect for artists who keep their integrity..lou, bowie, iggy they were never complacent. They did whatever they wanted to do instead what people wanted them to do and I love them for it as much as I love them for their incredible music.
"All your two-bit friends - they asked you for your autograph. They put you up on stage - they thought it would be good for a laugh": I'm intrigued at the meaning of this.

Strangely no one has mention something : this álbum was producen by Bob Ezrin , Canadian who also producen Peter Gabriel,s debut álbum & P. Floyd,s "The Wall" ...
This album, "The Wall", and Leonard Cohen's "Death of A Ladie's man" all have a very similar sound to me. "Death of A..." was produced I think by Phil Spector?

The one thing that bugs me is "shootin' you up with pills". But then, who is anyone else to tell Lou Reed what he hasn't seen? "Good one, Lou. Do they swallow needles, too?" "Yeah, a couple of times, actually! Not a pretty sight...."
As far is I know it was practice to empty the contents of some pills into a saucepan and heat it or something to reduce it down to a purer state, hence shooting up with pills. Lou knew his drugs.
but its COOLER when its about a iggidelia, being iggidelic , and maybe the black and blue is about our drug soaked forearms, and filled with hate is about punk rock (; it is about Jim Osterberg 8-*
There is such raw honesty in Lou Reeds music. It hits you straight in the heart.
YES , i love BERLIN , very true your words
Louuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu 🖤🖤
Haunting, original, lou reed.
Well said. It’s Lou. Thanks, wherever you are.
Lou Reed the master of cool 😎
My favourite Lou Reed album.
Amen brother
It's been with me all my life. As brutal as it is in parts, It's been my constant companion.
The second part of this is so beautifully haunting..
+Mundi Cox I know! I find myself listening to it over and over again.
Yes and the first part is so funky. Love this song!
@@LarsK-xs2yiThe first part sounds like Iggy Pop's The Idiot album was based entirely on that

I guess Caroline was a singer at some bar
Caroline was probably Nico and Jim was Jim Morriston who Nico had a scene with. Its a tragic album one of his best, drawn from direct experience

Wondered if this beginning has ever been sampled...very rap oriented...Lou always was the " Original Wrapper"
Bob Dylan wrapped first I would argue
@thomasxxiv2508 probably... I ain't arguing...Reed had a song called the Original Wrapper in 86... my point.
for me it is the saddest album ....but I love it anyway
Now I know where The Idiot's electronic - nihilistic sound came from
I don't care wear it's at, I'm just like an alley cat.
