    Oh man, an Air Force Mustang would be so sick. It’s like the Cobra R of SSP’s.

      Man, I'm fixing to go pick up this 87 Texas SSP for 400 bucks. She's real rough. The worst part is the fact that it has been T-Boned on the drivers door. Beings that these are unibody cars, do you think it would even be wise to purchase? Or should I just walk away. Really look forward to hearing your thoughts on this asap. For the record, if I don't buy it, it will more than likely be crushed (yes, there is already a crusher on site there were the cars are at. The Mustang has the complete drive train still in (and both buck tags). What do you think? Should I get it?!

    You panned past it a couple of times, but didn't mention the trunk release being on the left lower dash instead of the glove box. That was SSP-only standard, allowing officers to quickly access the trunk without having to reach over and around the equipment often mounted on the right side of the transmission hump.
    Single-key entry was standard, but dual-key was an option (though pointless), and you could even have every car in an SSP order made to use the same key shape! It was a "single key fleet" option.
    Your interior reminded me that the SSP seats were the 4-cylinder's base-version material, not the V8s usual nicer cloth or the GT's articulated seats. Also, the one you're driving has a Cyclops map light, but all the ones I've owned (NC & SC) had the pieplate-sized white citation light, which was an option.
    You talked about the wheels, but I do want to point out that the 16" Pony rims were never an option for the SSP. For budget reasons for agencies, the 15" 10-hole was the standard size from '87 until the end in '93, 225/60VR15. And only the SSP came with a full-size spare; the LX and GT all got donuts.

      Thanks for the great info there Gavin. I didn't know about the trunk button until after I had put out this video, but yeah it makes a lot of sense. I had no idea you could get 2 keys as an option, so thanks for sharing that!

      Problem with that is that it wasn't standard, UTAH/washington did not have them anywhere but the glovebox.

    Great video!! I bought my surplus Washington State Patrol 1984 Mustang SSP 5.0 in 1988 and still own it and keep it garaged..White with spotlight and dog dish hub caps on 4 lug ,14" black steel wheels..it is a 5 speed manual..4 barrel carburetor...it was our daily driver until my family out grew it.....I fire it up every month and have permanent vintage plates on it... it has a toggle switch like the one shown....it activates the wig-wag alternating flashing high beams...this still works on my Mustang SSP for some reason.....

    You could still get the brushed aluminum 10 holer's from 87-93. Wisconsin used those, neighboring Minnesota ordered the black ones.
    The SSP did not hold up well in police service. The reason the floor pans had to be reinforced was because the seats would tear loose in collisions. They did not, however, reinforce the entire monocoque the way Chrysler did with its R and M body squads, so after 75,000 miles or so of severe duty usage, they were very tired. The Diplomat/Fury and Caprice were true battlewagons, as they went to auction at 120,000 miles or 7 years (today it's the full 150,000 designed lifespan).
    One big PIA for fleet managers was the need to run two different squads per trooper, at least up north. Here in WI, only the ranks sergeants and above were assigned an SSP or Camaro, and they were also assigned a Gran Fury to keep in the garage for foul weather days, and winter driving.
    Finally, Ford never got the brakes up to par on the Fox. Braking is everything in a squad. The big Mopar and Chevy sedans would haul down from their supersonic speeds repeatedly. The SSP, not so much.

      @GearHead704  3 роки тому

    Great video. Glad to see someone put some of the ssp know how into one video as it’s impossible to understand it all. I have a 93 ssp. It has a 6 digit odometer and a calibrated 160mph speedometer. I have a 6 digit dso on the door but my 2nd buck tag only says “DSO Police” and nothing else. My owners manual and ssp service manual are black as well. I’ve been trying to figure out where the car was stationed/registered for awhile now. If anybody has knowledge on how I can figure that out please hit me up as I’m dying to know. Thanks again Matt for the awesome vid

    Very well done GH704. I did not know most of or any of what you shared here. Very educational. We always thought growing up as kids that the SSP cars including Mustangs, Crown VIcs, and the Caprice were all suped up engine wise. Even before I saw the Blues Brothers. LOL. It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. Yeah, but does it have S.C.M.O.D.S. SCMODS? (state county municipal offenders data system)

    I love the SSP Mustangs. I had a 1984 SSP Mustang in the 1990s. Back then I found out that the 1984 Mustang SSP actually had a more powerful engine than the 1984 production mustang GTs - due to a few changes. It was confirmed back then via a few sources, including a neighbor who worked for the highway patrol as a mechanic and worked on all the police vehicles. The second was an article from MT which documented that the 1984 SSP actually had 205 HP versus the 175 in the normal GT 5.0.

    • @albertgaspar627
      @albertgaspar627 Рік тому

      can you explain what the changes were? It's a known fact the CHP used Mustangs with the 49 state computer so they did better than the ECM california required on civilian 5.0 Mustangs. If Ford honestly had a different part, perhaps it finally showed up in future 5.0 Mustangs (camshaft, heads, etc) but of course Ford went backwards on the 1986 head before the E7 design.

    • @glennduquette
      @glennduquette Рік тому +2

      @@albertgaspar627 I was told by my neighbor (Florida Highway Patrol mechanic who worked on them) that his contact from Ford told him the engine was basically a preproduction 1985 (carburator) GT engine in the SSP for 84. I don't think the article specifies it, but it does talk a little about the engine. Read it by putting this search term into Google " 1984 Mustang Police Interceptor Road Test - MT Magazine". I just tested and it still comes up.

    • @albertgaspar627
      @albertgaspar627 Рік тому

      @@glennduquette thanks a lot for that link--there's a Jay Leno thing that goes around facebook about the early SSP Mustangs and an officer thought the Mustang had a 170 mph or something top speed. No way with the old 2 bbl 302, but apparently these were modified (4bll and tube headers says the article, likely a precursor as you said--gives Ford a free test in the real world). the 225 hp EFI units topped out at 137 mph, according to Michigan state police. On a side note, I live in CT where the State Police got T type buick V6's and with the speed limiter removed, could get near 150 mph
      (buick gran national fans will say there was never a GN cop car, but CT did in fact have a 1987--I have seen the documentation. It was probably meant as a test vehicle. CT had other interesting pursuit cars back then, like turbo 626 Mazdas and K5 Blazers to hide in the woods along the Merritt Parkway to catch New Yorkers speeding home)
