Hi Rob. when taking a taxi, never haggle for a price. Taxi cabs have meters. Meter should start at P40. Haggling is highly discourage. Giving tips to taxi drivers is optional. Stay safe and have a blast!
My tips for you: 1. Choose grab instead of taxi. Most of the taxi drivers will ask you too expensive fare. 2. When you are in Intramuros Manila, don't ride pedicabs. Choose Ejeep instead of pedicabs because they already have fixed fees. I'm a college student in Intramuros Manila that's why I'm aware that a lot of tourist are being victimized by most of them. 3. Always check your bags and pockets because there are still pickpockets roaming around Metro Manila, like the other big cities around the world. It's better to bring a bag that has a zipper that can't be opened easily. 4. If you are confused with directions, it is better to ask the local travellers or travellers with their own family because they can give you the right details, and will not try to scam you. It may sound negative for some but it is better to follow these tips so that you could still enjoy your stay in the Philippines. My country is a nice country but like any other countries, it also has its negative sides. Hope you enjoy your stay. 😇

If you ride a Taxi tell the driver to activate the meter to have a fair fare. Most Taxis here in the Philippines take advantage of their passenger including us Locals, it's better to ride a jeepney.
Hope you enjoy your stay in the country. Those cabs should have meters on. There are also other ways of commuting like using the jeepneys, tricycles, pedicabs, trains, and buses. They are cheaper than using taxis. Visit San Agustin Church while in Intramuros. There is also the Rizal Park, museums, and Manila Cathedral to name a few. To get a feel of the city, go to Quiapo, Binondo, Santa Cruz, Divisoria area. There are a lot of jeepneys going there and costs only P8 for the first 4 kilometer ride. Explore street food and some authentic Filipino dishes like sinigang, adobo, lumpiang sariwa, kaldereta, kare-kare and a lot more. Maybe you could just give bread or patronize their product to help them. In fact, there is a law regarding this. In Baguio City, there are a lot of kids who would help carry your baggage or sell you some stuff. They don't beg but work to earn a living. You don’t have to ask every taxi how much. Just say where your going then see if they clicked the meter when it start moving. Just give additional tip 20 to 100 depends on your mood. 😀
Yeah that's what we do. If driver is cool, courteous, story teller, gave 50 but it not and has strong face we would not care but pay taxi meter. Better to sense route of taxi driver when it takes too long and add going around routes for short distance like 5 kms or 10 kms. Maybe distance from SM mall Lagro, QC to SM Alabang, Munti. is 50 kms but don't take taxi this route it's too far to hire taxi. Ride a bus but pls pls don't goto Munti it's the national prison cell ahhahah

Best is to ask other UA-camrs who have had experience travelling the Philippines...so many of them to avoid any unpleasant experience, not that it is fun in the Philippines...but there are always opportunistic people at any place in the world. Be Safe Have fun....
You can ask them to use the meter.. Don't give the price or ask prices when riding a taxi. There is always the meter to be used. If they refused to use the meter, you can actually report them on the phone number on the taxi itself that says: LTFRB Hotline or something. Use GRAB instead. It's more systematic. Enjoy! Mabuhay! If your hostel is in Makati and you're going to Intramuros, Grab will most likely charge you P300-350 for a Grab Car, P200-280 for a Grab Taxi. A regular taxi you hail off the street will cost you from P180 to P250 from Makati to Intramuros. So good job haggling. If your hostel is in Malate, Intramuros is just a jeepney away (P12) although it will just let you off at the entrance and you still have to walk the rest of the way. Inside Intramuros are streets with heritage buildings which may not allow a car entry. That's why they have calesas (horse-drawn cabs) inside. Part of the tourist trade. About the mendicants who carry cards in English asking for money, they are unavoidable and every where you go practically, and more so when you're a foreigner and blonde like yourself. My tip is to have ready P20 coins (the new ones, sparkling gold in color) or P20 bills. You can have your P100 exchanged at any money exchange counter, especially the ones you changed money with. Metro Manila like any other city has criminal elements from snatchers/thiefs and swindlers who victimize foreigners. Taxis who overcharge I call them highway robbers. So always be on the lookout. But I'm confident you'll find us Filipinos friendly and ready to lend a helping hand, and we outnumber criminals 9 to 1.
