  • In this interview, I talk with Gastroenterologist Doctor David Clarke who is also the author of “They can’t find anything wrong”.
I gear my questions towards understanding what exactly we do AFTER we discover we have MindBody pain.
    We discuss the following:
*The ACE’s study & how it shows the devastating effects of childhood trauma, but how we can recover and reverse symptoms.
*The 5 different categories of stress that cause pain/symptoms.
*What self care looks like, and how we often need to learn to have fun and enjoy life without guilt.
*How to overcome the guilt of selfcare.
*The different tools for recovering from childhood stress including writing and visualizing.
    *Overcoming hidden resistances
*How to parent in a way that sets your child up for physical health.
    Here is his bio!
David D. Clarke, MD is President of the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association. He is also Assistant Director at the Center for Ethics and Clinical Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology Emeritus both at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon, USA. He is board-certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine and practiced Gastroenterology in Portland from 1984 to 2009. During that time, he successfully treated over 7000 patients whose pain or other symptoms were not explained by diagnostic tests. The ideas are described in his book They Can’t Find Anything Wrong!, which was praised by a president of the American Psychosomatic Society as “truly remarkable” and named by Brit & Co to be one of the five best mind-body books ever written. He is also the lead editor for the professional textbook Psychophysiologic Disorders. He lectures about Psychophysiologic Disorders to health care professionals and the public across North America and in Europe and has appeared on over 100 television and radio broadcasts. This was very helpful, especially the idea that thinking of God as harsh and punitive can have the same effect as parents like that. My parents were not that way, but my own ideas of God have been from a young age … not for others, just for myself.
    Your channel is very helpful.

I have to speak up and oppose his suggestion for drinking Gatorade. Not only does it contain too many artificial ingredients that are bad for you, but it is overloaded with sugar. Even a healthy person’s postprandial glucose spike is too high after drinking Gatorade, so a sick person with gastroparesis would react even worse.
I was diagnosed with viral gastroparesis over 32 years ago. It is a condition that causes delayed gastric emptying, which is where your stomach empties slower than a normal, healthy stomach. It is well-known that most people with Gastroparesis have severe Reactive Hypoglycemia, which means their postprandial glucose spikes are worse than normal, because of slow digestion. Added sugar exacerbates the problem. The sugar digests so slowly, it overburdens the pancreas, and it is my opinion that it contributes to insulin resistance. On top of that, added sugar increases the nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate, brain fog, sweating, near syncope, and other symptoms of the Reactive Hypoglycemia.
I liked another comment that suggested coconut water. Early in my illness, I also relied heavily on protein shakes that contained healthy ingredients, and I mixed them in plant-based milks like coconut and almond milks. Just make sure the plant milks do not have added sugar.

Do you just write all the negative events of your life?

I did, and then I journaled about each one in a way that freed me from them. I journaled until I found truth (from God) that showed me why I wasn't victim to the emotion that event caused to well up in me.

Gatorade! Really? That is the most destructive solution. Why not simple coconut water? Coconut water is easy to digest. There are no colors, no preservatives, no sodium benzoate, no added sugar, no sodium citrate, no monopotassium phosphate,! Yep, he lost me at Gatorade.
