This came up at my trial after an on duty shooting. The prosecutor alleged that I was a "loose cannon" who modified my glock trigger so I could shoot faster. Thankfully I still had the factory box that has the label showing I bought it from glock with a 4.5 lb pull. Same prosecutor alleged I was militant because I wore a BDU style uniform instead of class C's. I find the 6 lb trigger on my Walther PPS to be just fine. I havent shot a shield 9mm in quite some time but I dont remember the factory trigger being that bad. I definitely agree with Mas that it's the smoothness, not the weight that makes a good trigger.
I did exactly that with my Shield. My G19 has a 4.5# Ghost connector. My EDC is a P365 with a stock trigger. Trigger pull is between 4.5 and 5 lbs and all 3 are smooth with similar trigger pulls. Consistency within established limits is my goal.
You missed the point.....not THE END of the story as seen by a jury.....YOU MODIDIFIED IT TO AN UNSAFE LEVEL ( they will say....and be hard to defend to a "non-gun" group of people)
Good advise. I need to see my carry gun not just through my eyes, but also through the potential eyes of 12 jurors selected specifically for their inexperience with guns.
I had heard that rumor about Ayoob and the modified trigger thing (as well as the hand loaded ammo thing) decades ago. Glad to have it clarified - much appreciated.
My glock 19x is stock except I did install the OverWatch precision trigger flat face that is and the trigger pull weight is 4.5 lb. Is that acceptable?
This is an excellent subject . I'm going to contact Berretta to find out if putting a " D " spring in my 92FS drops it below the manu minimum specs . Thanks guys !
Be careful with the D spring. I ended up having a serious problem with light strikes. I completely bombed a competitive shooting match as a result. The amount of reduced trigger weight is minor. I wouldn't be concerned at all about deviating too far from the original specs.
Mr. Ayoob pretty much confirmed everything I've been telling students for years. One thing I also tell them is to ditch things like stickers or signs that have "cute" little quotes on them. I tell them to picture the jury as though they're a bunch of rabid anti-gunners, and it was their kid you shot. @@papimaximus95 you really don't understand that there are civil and criminal proceedings. @Papi Maximus it’s about the perception the jurors have of you and not the technicality of the law as written. People can be emotionally manipulated with a narrative, and that’s what this is all about. It shouldn’t affect the trial facts and whatnot, but it does to a degree.

😆Right?? Lol Mas has literally helped shape now 2 generations of responsible gun carriers. Conversely, when I hear someone rant about “Mas is full of bs...” that pretty much tells me all I need to know about *their* opinion... 🤣
I love Massad. Everytime I listen to him I learn something new. I love how he gives legal arguments like he is in the court room. My question or statement is a standard Glock advertised trigger is 5.5lbs which in reality when tested is about 6.5lbs. I have a 4.5lbs drop in trigger bar and a titanium safety plunger which does not affect the trigger pull weight but the smoothness of the trigger pull. I believe my personal gun pulls at least 5lbs or just above which nearly everyone out there would still consider safe. My point I am making is that the advertised trigger weight is normally is little lighter than the actual pull weight since gun mfr's do not want to be sued. In my personal opinion if your actual trigger pull weight is within 1/2lbs of advertised trigger weight then you should be fine. Just make sure to follow common gun safety rules including don't place your finger inside the trigger guard unless you are going to shoot. Also make sure to get several days worth of extra training including things like deesculation, medical, force on force with evidence of course completion. I personally was surprised when doing force on force and shoot/don't shoot exercises how easily it was just to react and shoot without thinking when already stressed when someone unexpectedly jumps out of a doorway less than arms length in front of you waving their arms screaming for help. How you think you would act and how you actually act are not the same.
Don't modify the Glock trigger, even if they are Glock factory parts from another gun. Reference court case SANTIBANES VS. TOMBALL(HOUSTON), 2006. americanhandgunner.com/the-ayoob-files/unintended-shot-the-santibanes-incident/
I have 2 hi power pistols and both had the magazine disconnects removed when I got them. I don’t carry them but Intake them to the range a few times per year. They have 4.5-5 pound triggers.
Exactly why I love Walther's PPQ / PDP with the manufacturers flat metal trigger installed and not the competition trigger springs keeping the factory duty trigger pull weight.
Thank you for the great info in this video. Was considering a trigger upgrade on my sd9ve. Drop the standard 8-10lb trigger pull down closer to 5-6lbs. I decided to reached out to Smith & Wesson first, to find out what thier min trigger weight spec is from the factory, and they actually recommend a 6-7lb trigger as the min. The trigger upgrade would have dropped the pull weight below what the factory recommends.
Been following your channel for almost a decade just wanted to say agin God bless brother! You also personally responded to me regarding questions I had about a good vp9 holster which has been my edc carry for several years. Thanks for all you do John. Praise Jesus for ppl like you, my support always!
Damn right. Never pull the trigger unless you're justified to kill your intended target, and you'll be fine. If you're justified to kill, there is no such thing as excessive.
I'm curious what the stance would be in making a change to a part common in newer models of a handgun series, such as throwing a D spring in a legacy model of Beretta, since it is factory in most of their newest offerings. It doesn't disable safeties and it doesn't drop the trigger weight below any thresholds, but it does make the trigger lighter
Arizona v. Brailsford That was the case when the PD shot an unarmed and fully compliant man in a La Quinta hallway. The AR that the PD used had a dust cover with "You're fucked" written on it.
Yeah, I got curious and had to go look it up too. Turns out that the offensive wording and logo on his rifle was motivation for the prosecutor to bring charges. Judge did not allow that “evidence” into the trial. www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/mesa/2017/09/08/profane-etching-ex-mesa-officer-phillip-mitch-brailsford-gun-inadmissible-daniel-shaver-murder-trial/648709001/
Honestly, the idea that a prosecution is going to argue a shooting was accidental/negligent while the defendant argues the shooting was intentional, but justified, is a bit ridiculous. If you intended to pull the trigger, it doesn’t matter how light it is, and it doesn’t matter who modified it. Cosmetic modifications can be a different story.
Yeah my buddies and I have had long conversations about this back and forth. I was originally the "never modify the trigger!" kinda guy, until I realized just how much more accurate I can be by changing just one or two things on my Glock. It really does seem like you'd basically be hitting the unlucky powerball lottery to actually have a case where you lose because you modified a trigger a little bit. One of my main concerns when conceal carrying is mass shooter defense. That's why I always carry at my church, and I'm being trained by the head of security there. One could argue that you'd never need to make a 40-50 yard shot, until someone with an AR takes a shot at you or someone else down a long hallway or out in a parking lot at that distance.
tv92taylor. I'm thinking the same thing.... If I felt my life was in danger and I shot the perp, how can someone else possibly say I'm guilty for a negligent discharge? But then again, pretty much everything else in the world is completely insane right now, so kinda fits in...
I think he meant that the prosecution would argue you don't know where or what you are going to hit. If your trigger is so light you may have got away with hitting the intended target but what about an errand shot? What do i mean? If you are in a defensive shooting and the person you shot had 3 bullet wounds but you only have 6 rounds left in your magazine. Where did the rest go? They could argue negligence that you put others in danger because of the modification to the gun (not that you were a bad shot and missed).
@@mahituna1 I guess the bottom line is we're really at a point with our criminal and civil justice system that we can't really defend ourselves. All of my carry Glocks have modified triggers using Glock parts. My answer to an attorney would be, "So I can shoot more accurately without endangering innocent bystanders".
To play devil's advocate, your defense attorney would in all likelihood strongly advise you against testifying, so you won't get to give that testimony. You're probably better off with genuine OEM Glock parts though.

Yeah, this is good advice, and it may not be the way it should be but it's the reality of the criminal justice system in America. I actually had a buddy who was carrying a Glock 43 for his everyday carry and he did some upgrading to the pistol which included some TFX sights, stainless steel guide rod, grip enhancement by way of stippling, improved slide cuts by way of custom milling, and he added one of those little streamlight laser/light combos that actually attaches around the trigger guard cause you know there's no rail space on the 43. With all that said he didn't do anything to the internals, no upgraded trigger shoe or trigger bar, nothing. Well I was totally fine with the pistol and thought it was very nice, that was until I saw the one upgrade I just missed until I actually looked it over in person. He had replaced the factory rear slide plate, you know the one you have to remove to take the striker out and such, with a aftermarket aluminum plate that said "Infidel". I gave him a circumstance in which that could be seen or interpreted by a court of law as a very negative or even potentially radical word to have on a firearm, and while the odds are very low as a standard civilian, in terms of you actually ending up in an encounter that results in the discharge of your personal protection weapon, their high enough that millions of people including myself carry on a regular basis. I didn't even get into the what if scenario where the person or persons you end up in a deadly force encounter with would happen to be of a particular religion or decent.
My 1911 has a short reach trigger for my small hands and has had the action smoothed but the pull was never reduced. Likewise my S&W Model 60 had the serrations for the trigger removed and the trigger polished smooth. I am not looking to lighten any factory pull for a carry gun but I will make it smoother.
When I first read Massad's book, he warns heavily against carrying staggered loads i.e. hollowpoint followed by FMJ and then say a wadcutter ....bad news . The counter attorney will claim you were looking to kill or even to get into a shootout . Staggered loads is a no no ... carry one type of bullet only
So I am guessing that drilling out a lead bullet, putting mercury in the cavity, and plugging the tip with lead is a no-no? For those of you that don't know, that was an old CIA trick for assassinations.
They should just cut to the chase, and pass a law allowing only one kind of ammo. After all, nobody "needs" more than one kind... right? I mean, you're saying you've shot someone, and you're worried about an attorney claiming you were "looking to kill" them? Or claiming that you were "looking to get into a shootout"... not because you were carrying a DEADLY WEAPON, but because of your AMMO CHOICE? Sounds like some of the bullshit advice given out by "drama queen" concealed-carry instructors. I just overheard one of them telling a class this past weekend that they needed to buy concealed-carry insurance (I'm guessing he gets a commission) because, when they go somewhere that doesn't allow weapons, they will probably accidentally shoot someone while trying to leave their weapon in their car. (WTF?) Best just leave your weapon at home, then. Or carry an air pistol... with plastic pellets.
@@lordofthewoods carry marshmallows. The left right now won't tolerate any self defense, so it doesn't really matter. The only acceptable course of action is for you to be dead by thug.
I even go a step further. I get ammunition with the name “defense” or “police” or anything that sounds official, especially if the local police like to use it.

Dodd Garger I disagree with you. As a gun grabber it’s easy to accuse you of having made a homemade gun so that you could kill my client and attempt to never be caught for doing so. A P80 should just be a range gun.
@@Aspen910 that should be easily debunked in court when your attorney points out that you called the police to report the shooting and waited for the police to arrive
Yea, pretty much. If a zealous prosecuting attorney can jab at a lightened trigger, you bet they will jab at a home made firearm. if it is not serialized yet, even more fuel for that fire. That makes you look like a criminal, you didn't want the gun to be traced to you. Besides from a reliability standpoint, do you really trust your workmanship more than a gun made at a factory? With skilled laborers, maintained tooling, quality assurance personnel, and a proven track record. Plus you can practice with these guns for thousands and thousands of rounds, to ensure they are indeed reliable with your carry ammunition. I have personally seen a P80 lower where the rear and front rails for the slide were not level with each other. It actually worked with a glock factory slide, but not the aftermarket slide the owner was trying to install. IMO, a P80 is a range toy or a science project, never something to be seriously carried or used.
I carried, & still do sometimes, a Glock 23 gen 3 with a Wolf 40 to 9mm conversion barrel in it and a Ghost disconnector. Recently I replaced the whole Glock trigger with a Timney Alpha trigger. I changed parts because I target shoot with it. I'm not wealthy, so I also carry it. I likely will never have to shoot anyone. I sure hope not. But to me, to make a gun more accurate and easier to shoot means that if I did have to use the gun, I'm less likely to miss & hit something or someone I didn't want to hit. My finger is never in the trigger guard until I'm ready to shoot. I even carry ammo that I reloaded. Why? Again, because I'm not wealthy. So if I have hundreds of rounds that I made, why the hell would I spend $1 each round for self-defense ammo? I can't target practice with $1 per round ammo.
It's common sense. Even Jerry Miculek doesn't carry a 2 pound trigger for self defense. There are no absolutes but carrying a trigger made for speed shooting I'd say there's a high probability that you'll shoot an unintended target in a high stress situation. Gr8 vid. 🔫
Through many years of going through firearms training, I've heard the same thing that Massad has said. The opposing side is going to say that you intentionally had that firearm modified to make it easier to kill someone. I am proud to say that have also been one of Massad's students, an experience I will never forget. Some say his techniques are "old school," he doesn't follow modern techniques. If you have ever seen the gentleman shoot, there is nothing wrong with what one would call "old school." Jim
Attorneys will say anything to make you look bad and bolster their case against. Don't worry about what they might say. Worry about why you did what you did and be able to explain it. They tell you you modified the trigger to kill easier, you say I modified it to shoot more accurately.
I'm a believer in stock. Most quality pistols these days will outshoot most shooters. I like to change out grips but none of that punisher skull crapola.
I've listened to or read everything Massad Ayoob has written on the legal liabilities of self defense and gun ownership over the years. It's a shame that a huge part of the responsibility that comes with gun ownership is the legal considerations you have to make, from ammo to modifications to the intricacies of the law.
Excellent listen, me personally, I never change the stock trigger. YOU learn to shoot whatcha got, good! Obviously what we heard here proves it can/could save you jail time and millions of dollars
If you have a good self defense case, you will likely never be charged. If you do get arrested and the prosecutor is resorting to how your gun looks, and they type of ammo you used, etc. They are pretty desperate. Think about it, why would punisher skulls on your gun matter to anyone if someone broke into your home and threatened you? Reminds me of the Rittenhouse trial. That case was obviously self defense and the prosecution was desperate. At one point they were chastising Rittenhouse for using FMJ ammo and his basic response was he didn't really know much about ammo, ammo is ammo to him. Needless to say, he was acquitted of all charges.

@@kylewood8327 I hear what you're saying but where's the data on this? Can you find me how many cases where people were convicted based on how their gun performed and looked vs the case itself just being a bad or imperfect self defense case ?
@@kylewood8327 I'm not necessarily saying that, but I think having data points vs. just anecdotal stories is a better bet. All I'm saying is if you are wanting that apex trigger, or whatever upgrade you want, don't be afraid not to get it because of a situation like that. Attorneys can say anything. You can also respond by saying I got it because it makes me more accurate, it looks cool, or I've got diminished hand muscles and it's easier for me to shoot, etc. etc. If your attorney is worth their salt, I'm not even sure how arguing about how your gun looked or the trigger pull is even relevant to bring up, and not subject to an objection. Relevance and prejudicial?
Really informative-- really appreciate listening to Massad. I recently went through a reputable place in CZ Custom to smooth out my triggers on my p-07 and p-01 omega models. With the swapped out hammer and recoil springs, the DA weight came down to about 7.75 lbs, and the SA pull is now 3.5-3.75 lbs. The did some polishing as well. The trigger is much smoother on the p-07 than on the p-01. It makes me wonder if I'm at risk having modified them after watching this video, if the 'standard' is considered 4 lbs for any striker fired or SA gun pull, even though I went through a place who modifies thousands of CZ's for both competition as well as personal defense.

My 7 pound MP Shield trigger was unusable. I put a 4 pound Apex on it. Now i can shoot it more accurately. THE END.
Absolutely unusable I dumped mine for a Taurus much much better
I find the 6 lb trigger on my Walther PPS to be just fine. I havent shot a shield 9mm in quite some time but I dont remember the factory trigger being that bad. I definitely agree with Mas that it's the smoothness, not the weight that makes a good trigger.
I did exactly that with my Shield. My G19 has a 4.5# Ghost connector. My EDC is a P365 with a stock trigger. Trigger pull is between 4.5 and 5 lbs and all 3 are smooth with similar trigger pulls. Consistency within established limits is my goal.
Man y'all are spoiled. Revolvers run 13 pounds on double action and they shoot just fine.

Always good content when Mas is speaking. I view him as the ultimate firearm Guru.
This is an excellent subject . I'm going to contact Berretta to find out if putting a " D " spring in my 92FS drops it below the manu minimum specs . Thanks guys !
On mine it only eased it up very slightly nothing to brag about. It certainly won`t be considered a trigger job on a 92FS.
Also the conversion of the safety to de-cocker only “G.”
Cause the last thing you need is the DA showing them pictures of you wearing a shirt that says "When In Doubt, Shoot Em Again".

Massad is the real deal. Always enjoy listening and learning from him.

Put more than 1 bullet in the bad guy. It's hard to argue negligent discharge when there are 3 bullets high center in 4in group
Then they use your excessive shots fired against you.
@@gblargg 3 shots i hardly excessive.

Arizona v. Brailsford
That was the case when the PD shot an unarmed and fully compliant man in a La Quinta hallway. The AR that the PD used had a dust cover with "You're fucked" written on it.
Yeah, I got curious and had to go look it up too. Turns out that the offensive wording and logo on his rifle was motivation for the prosecutor to bring charges. @@allmac600 that was also a ridiculously unjustified shooting
My X5 legion has the grey guns comp trigger but only using it for range toy.
It will come up big in the civil lawsuit, as he explained the lawyers will paint you as negligent since it's a wrongful death lawsuit

It doesnt matter if he loses, only if you do.
John it’s great to hear this from a Legend. Excellent vid and important info.
@Rusty Shackleford: EXACTLY!
Different kinds of firearms, loads, etc., exist for a REASON!
(WTF?)
Best just leave your weapon at home, then. Or carry an air pistol... with plastic pellets.
@@lordofthewoods carry marshmallows. The left right now won't tolerate any self defense, so it doesn't really matter. The only acceptable course of action is for you to be dead by thug.

Nah just use a standard trigger parts kit in it
Dodd Garger I disagree with you.
P80 really is for shtf, not something I would go public with.

Sht, my unit commemorative gun has its motto on the side: “strike to kill”... I guess I will carry something else.
Have it engraved "It squirts, heavy"
Gr8 vid. 🔫

I am proud to say that have also been one of Massad's students, an experience I will never forget. Some say his techniques are "old school," he doesn't follow modern techniques. If you have ever seen the gentleman shoot, there is nothing wrong with what one would call "old school."

Attorneys will say anything to make you look bad and bolster their case against. Don't worry about what they might say. Worry about why you did what you did and be able to explain it. They tell you you modified the trigger to kill easier, you say I modified it to shoot more accurately.
Show us where that's ever been successfully used to get someone convicted.
Would simply polishing trigger components for smooth operation be considered a questionable modification?

I've listened to or read everything Massad Ayoob has written on the legal liabilities of self defense and gun ownership over the years. It's a shame that a huge part of the responsibility that comes with gun ownership is the legal considerations you have to make, from ammo to modifications to the intricacies of the law.
I’m curious how a jury will react to an Apex duty/carry trigger kit in a M&P shield with a manual safety?
The government of any kind needs to stay out of my home, my mind, my church and my gun.

Mass Ayoob is an American Treasure. He is one of the great defenders of freedom.
