I have the 1984,, 61 white top also, been in the family since new. I sharpened chain, cleaned it and run it out of gas 2 yrs. ago. Figure I should give it a try. Started up like new and runs great, Walbro carb. Didn't cut cause it's clean so drained oil and gas out to run dry again. Never worked on and all original. I use the 154, 345 and 266 bought new and I think I replaced fuel line in one. Great saws, great video.
My dad also bought his new when I was a young teenager (I'm 50 now), he passed away 9 years ago and I just pulled it apart last weekend to see what it needs to run again. Looks like it will need a full rebuild but I see that many parts are still available for it and it should be a fun to do! Thanks for the video!
There is a great amount of aftermarket support for these saws. If not, there are always good used parts out there aplenty! It's always that much more fun when there's an attachment to the saw! Enjoy!
I've got my Dads Blacktop 61 Hardwood. He passed away 8 years ago. Took it in for a service and the shop said it wasn't worth rebuilding. Told them it was a sentimental piece and price was not an issue....they basically told me not interested and take it and move along, Bought a Hyway 272 popup kit and did some basic porting. Fabbed up a muffler and now it rips! I reckon Dad is giving me the thumbs up! BTW it spends its life cutting hardwood Down Under......👍
I have an 89 grey top model I’m currently working on that belonged to my Dad. It’s completely original except for the bar & chain. It has a Tillitson made in Ireland. I have a diaphragm kit on order but the saw is in very good mechanical shape for 34 years old. Just extremely filthy. My Dad and I had very different approaches to tool care, maintenance and cleaning. As long as it ran, he wasn’t messing with it.
Got one for free too! Went to my friend's house and the saw was in the trash in the garage and I ask why, he said doesn't run, want it? take it! Brought her home and the carb kit was installed wrong! She runs well!!
Great video on how to get one of these old saws back up and running! I've got a 1983 model like that one. The problem with it is, when I'm pulling on it to try and crank it, about every 3rd or 4th try, it gets stiff, and difficult to pull. Feels like the compression just goes from 150 to 240... I've blown all of the gunk out from both sides, and it still does it. I pulled the muffler off, and there's some signs of blow by on the piston (which I'd expect from a 40yr old saw, with a single piston ring) but I don't see any sign of scoring on the exhaust or the intake side of the piston. Any idea what might be causing this? Thanks!!
That's a 272XP top end if I'm not mistaken judging by the shape of the intake. Did you measure the bore? Never seen anything but an HS on a 61/266 either. I know I'm way late...
Hey man! The oil cap on my early 80’s 61 broke… I was wondering what oil cap you used?! They dont make the original part number 501564101 anymore… would be greatly appreciated, as some people say part number 501626602 is too big? Anyone else have this issue?
Man, that's a very open ended question haha. It could be ANY number of things..........bad fuel line, fuel filter, spark plug, clogged air filter, loss of compression, crank seals, air leak at the carb/intake block.......... on and on. If you want to shoot me an email samishsawworks@gmail.com I'd be happy to help you work on diagnosing it though.
Mine was really hard to start, I watched a video on how to tune the carb on it and it fired up on the 3rd pull. Used it today and couldn't believe how well it ran and cut after sitting for 5 or 6 years
I found a real mint black top last winter too, I am lucky to have a Huskey dealer in my area that gets me OEM parts for all my vintage saws. Good luck to you, these saws are fun.
Northwest Washington State. This winter has been abnormally mild here. We're usually around the 40°-50°F mark and rainy most of the year. We get a cold freeze once in a while, but not for any extended periods of time. The constant wet makes it seem cooler than it actually is for us who live here.
@@samishsawworks5870 I am almost as far in the other direction as you can go at this latitude, and we just had 3 days of bouncing between 10 above and 10 below. Saws all have to be retuned to cut at these temps. Rebuilding a saw involves scurrying in and out for short bursts to avoid frostbite

Interesting.I have a 1983 61 . It came with the Tillotson carb.
My dad bought this saw in 1990 and it still runs like new!
It's important to know that not all Husqy 61s had Walbro carbs on them. Thanks for the info.

Hello from Moscow bro ! This is old chainsaw and very good . Sorry, my English is bad ..
Seen alot of these that just need love and some simple fixes to revive.

How do you tell what year it is?
Mine has a Walbro on it...
I have one with a broken brake band… part is no longer available. What can I use/do to have a working brake?

A friend pulled an Echo CS-5100 out of his neighbours bin for me today, haven't got it yet but pics look ok
Nice score! I have a cs-4600 on the shelf I'm excited to dig into myself. Echo makes a great saw. Great find bud! I love "garbage pail" saws!
@@samishsawworks5870 it's my first garbage bin saw, lets hope to save it
Good you got this one going btw, sorry got sidetracked lol

The PNW must be lousy with these things. I picked up the exact same saw last winter in better condition! Now to find a carb kit . . .

It is, they're everywhere here! haha. Not to hard to run across one if a person is looking, that's for sure.
Do you live in Melbourne?
Which corner of the country are you in? Looks relatively warm, I cant work outside this time of year
