Really appreciate this honest review. They may be..actually, THIS may be my favorite all time album. I realize though that a lot of my enjoyment comes from my situations growing up with it and even though I would love for other people to love it I am secretly a little bit pleased when people don't like it. It makes the "club" all that more exclusive.
I'm glad you picked up that creativity, and interesting texture was the bigger priority for the music. I hope you'll continue on with reviewing their albums. These first two, as you likely noticed, carry a raw feeling, and sound like the band could be playing them right in front of you. The production definitely becomes more polished with the next album, and there's plenty to be appreciated there as well. Something I love about Pixies is how eclectic yet cohesive the albums can be, while also maintaining a trademark style and sound that lets you always know it's them. Then there's the Frank Black solo work, and Kim's band The Breeders, and... well, okay, let's not get too far ahead of things, but there's a lot to explore. :D My initial reaction to their music was along the lines of "Well, this is rather mad. I love it!" It just clicked with me right away. I also highly recommend giving these albums regular revisits to see how differently they can strike you in the long run. What I would consider my favorites throughout the years has certainly gone full circle, and then even completely changed again. Regardless of whether or not their grip on you is really solid at this point (or ultimately even will be), something that's clear to me is that you _get_ them as a band. That goes a long way.
Hello, mate. Let me start by telling you I got a little ahead of you and kept listening the album despite of my thoughts on it, haha. You were right; this record strikes you better in the long run, but I still think it's better appreciated when you focus on the creative part, and not so much on the technique or lyrics. I still haven't listen to Doolittle, but for sure this month I'll have the reaction uploaded to the channel. I've been building hype for it, so I think it'll be an interesting one. Thanks for wathcing. Looking forward to hear from you again!
Great reaction/review! Kim Deal bassist/vocals also started the band Breeders which you should check out. I love Surfer Rosa/Come on You Pilgrim but I think Doolittle is their masterpiece and you will enjoy more.
When I see your reactions to the Pixies I can't help remembering my mother's first time I played the Pixies at her home during the summertime. For some reason I had a casette tape with The Cranberries on one side and Pixues on the other. She liked the Pixies more and asked: "who are them? the bangers of the neighbourhood?"
Also David Bowie did a cover of the song Cactus. He was a big Pixies fan as is Thom Yorke. I was lucky enough to see the Pixies reunite in the early 2000's back to back with Radiohead at Coachella. One of the best concerts ever.
I think the appeal of PIXIES to me is the fact most of the time I have no idea what the lyrics mean yet they compliment the instruments perfectly. You said it correct when you said don't try and anylise it just enjoy it!
I hope you react to two albums that are important to 90s rock and nu metal lol Angel Dust by FAITH NO MORE and Mr.bungle first album and their second album. But i warn you if you think pixies are werid you are in for a treat. MR.BUNGLE known for mixing over 35 plus genres into their 3 albums... they are the weridest band in the world.
Like somebody mentioned, you would definitely enjoy Kim Deal's other band, The Breeders. Good stuff. I would also recommend Velvet Underground. I feel like they are a common link between most of the bands you react to. You can definitely hear how Pixies influenced Nirvana, if you go back long enough, you can listen to the bands that influenced the bands that influenced Pixies, and VU is one of them. I would recommend listening to the first four albums in chronological order. Here's a little sample of how they sounded live: ua-cam.com/video/kym3xgrEISA/v-deo.html
Maybe my favorite band of all time, certainly they had a huge impact on me (and my peer group) at that time. I saw them in the UK about 30 years ago and they blew my goddam mind. Dam we had it good lol. "imagine listening to that high" ... I was young, and I was most definitely not imagining that part :p honestly I have such nostalgia goggles for the Pixies I cannot even judge if they are good now, I love all the songs on the first two albums without any discrimination, they are just fucking amazing to me still.
I remember hearing Vamos for the first time and knowing that I had to own every Pixies record ever made. Your reactions seemed to say that you liked it more than your final comments. Most of the music I love was not love at first listen, but that was true for Pixies.
I first remember the Pixies in the late 80's seeing them late night on MTV. I particularly remember Here comes your man video and didnt get it as a 12-13 year old but rediscovered them in around 1995 as a 19yr old and have been listening to them ever sense. Doolittle, and Bossanova are definitely in the top 10 of most repeat listened to albums of my life. Doolittle is probably #2 or #3 in that regard.
Hey Tony, great reaction. I think you might find Pere Ubu's "The Modern Dance" a fantastic and weird album to add to your reaction video collection. Pere Ubu are probably one of the most influential bands in the art/noise-punk genre of rock, and "The Modern Dance" is their best album. I hear a slight connection in the noisy, messy compositions and strange vocal styles of The Pixies and Pere Ubu, a band that released "The Modern Dance" in 1978 (!) which is amazing considering what was going on in popular music at that time. Thanks! :)
I first heard this album in 1990. Couldn’t make heads or tails out of it at first. But it haunted me and I have come back to it many many times over the years. It has a lot to offer if you let it. BTW, the original packaging of the LP was amazing. The cover had that gorgeous sepia Polaroid transfer print and had additional images inside. 4AD knew what they were doing with the design of that album.
Pixies were visionary, Perfectly ignored in U.S, huge in Europe (England and France in particulary) , Smell like teen Spirit was an accelerate Where is my mind rip off, I remember the first time I heard Nirvana , I said to myself : Fuck They stole the Pixies !!!!
I remember hearing Hey a couple years back. I though I sounded so cool and unique but for some reason I didn’t dig more in there catalog until this winter. And boy it is good. Doolittle is as far as I know a complete perfect album and surfer Rosa is not far from it. Bossanova and le Monde got som real bangers too!
Francisco the singer said in a interview once. Surfa rosa and most tbeir albums are meant to be short on purposes to create a psychological effect on the listeners they beleived if a song is short and eneegetic it can alter our brains and makes us want more and make the song enter our subconscious more so whenever we arent listening to them their songs will pop into our head making us wanna listen to them. :) thats why most of their songs are under 3 mintues. Their dootittle album mixes surfa rosas crazy reckeless attitude mix with a more popish style of rock and it sounds like a refreshing album but at the same.time you feel the same psychological effect that Francis aimed for with the short song effect :) also their guitarist uses the quiet and loud method of playing whuch creates their atmospheric sound you talk about how he switches from loud to soft or aggersive to mellow the same with their Rhythm guitar parts :)
Very good, well thought out review. I like that you included more thoughts after more listens, as well. Well done. I will watch if you move on to Doolittle. I love, love Surfer Rosa, but Doolittle is their masterpiece.
My man you need to listen to the album Atomizer by Big Black. Legendary noise rock band formed by Steve Albini the dude who produced and recorded both In Utero and Surfer Rosa
Tony and you younger people that just heard this reaction of the Surfer Rosa......... The sound you hear on this record was created by a group called The Talking Heads. They created this weird type of music. Search The Talking Heads on UA-cam that were formed in 1975 thirteen years before this debut album above of the Pixies. The reason Kurt liked The Pixies version was because it was more hardcore rock than The Talking Heads which weren't as much closer to Grunge. The heads were more punk/eccentric types.
hey Tony .... try one of the albums from Black's bands after pixies..... frank black, frank black and the Catholics, or black francis ...... you won't be disappointed .....start with....teenager of the year or cult of Ray
"Oh my god, I'm falling in love with her". Yep, that's what happens when you discover Kim Deal.
Pixies is the best!!
Kim Deal is my favourite person ever I love her
U kno whatsup
I just saw the Pixies when they opened for Weezer. They still sound amazing!
Saw them at MSG in April!!
me too bro
Weezer should have opened for Pixies.
@@tambert3897 nah weezer stole the show
Why would a superior band open for an inferior band?

I would LOVE to see a review of the album Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division. Love your reviews btw!
One of the best alternative rock albums ever made. Awesome!!!

@@ijustneedmyself "European Son" the drums and the noise.

Loved this album - Pixies always leave you wanting to hear more. I could have listened to 15 minute-long versions of 'Brick Is Red' or 'Cactus'.
surfer rosa was produced by steve albini. same guy who produced in utero

Vamos is just astounding. At second listen I was taken back, really good!

I love you bro! I love those types of videos!

which one would you say is your fav pixies album at the moment ?
It's hard to not fall in love with Kim Deal. Although her replacement, Paz, is equally good, imo.
The entire band is incredible :)

TOTY is so amazing!
“Im falling in love with her” oooooh I can see the darkness going through
Once you notice kim deal you cant move back 😬
re: Vamos. Watch some live videos. Joey changes the insane guitar solo every time.
So dang perceptive, Tony!
It’s like skipping school on a sunny day and hang out with your friends at the arcade.
12:32 literally me rn
Please tell me you've heard 'cannonball' by the breeders - Kim deals band. If not please react!
Was going to comment this. I think he'd appreciate the entire album, but "Cannonball" is a great song.
radiohead list them as a primary inspiration
I have only ONE single complaint with Surfer Rosa, and that’s the fact that it’s not long enough. Seriously, it’s incredibly short.
shout out to Kim Deal the bass queen
Possibly the greatest rock album of all time. So fun, wild and full of energy.
@12:31 I have many many times, my man 😉
Yah what is Oofda in Spanish. :)
Black Francis referred to his lyrics as 80% bullshit 20% crap. They're just a vocal harmony really.
I haven’t seen Fight Club....
Watch it
You should try Meat Puppets 2 by Meat Puppets.
1. Doolittle 2. Trompe Le Monde 3. Bossanova 4. Surfer Rosa 5. Come On Pilgrim - like if you disagree!
You should check out modest mouse all tjere albums are pretty good but I'd start with good news for people who like bad news
Have you heard of the band Fishmans? You should react to their album Long Season
You could have included so much more without getting pinged by UA-cam. Check out Section 107 of the 1976 Copyright Act.
