  • In this video, we discuss how to gauge the oncoming traffic's distance for a safe gap to make a left turn. We also discuss what to do when making a left turn if the oncoming traffic is clearly planning on running through a yellow or red light.
We are a driving school in Victoria BC Canada.

Why the car can turn left on red light, instead of waiting for the next green light?

Once in the intersection, you need to turn left on red (if you haven’t made your turn earlier), because the traffic going the other way will now have a green light & you will be sitting directly in their way. So, it’s safer for you to finish the left turn & clear the intersection, than to sit in the way & either hold cars up or have them try to go around you, which puts them in the path of other traffic (if it’s more than one lane), so collisions are more likely. If you are still behind the crosswalk/stop line, then you absolutely have to wait for the next green light. Left on red is only allowed if you are already in the intersection, when the light turns red. Hope this made sense and was helpful!

If they consistently do that, then yeah absolutely. But for the first few times, it's alright to cut some slack, even if it seems ridiculous.
