The kids were good sports about doing the service. They got a little distracted at times and needed to be redirected, but all in all they got the job done and learned to tie cool knots. The end outtakes we’re so funny I still laugh -Holly

The sound of the river is pretty relaxing. I’m currently watching this video for a change of pace between computer networking sections in my studies for an exam that I am studying for and hope to take by about mid-September or so.
When I was around Simon’s current age I already liked water like Ezra does here. Given that I was still level two at that age my parents usually had to at least hold my hands and sometimes I was on the late 1970s equivalent of a toddler leash. This was something that goes around the arm or wrist. My sister (who has always been level one) also had one of those until I think age eight or nine. After that she no longer needed this.
If in the next couple of years Ezra begins to become more aware of danger and wander less you might eventually be able to gradually transition him to something more like that and keep the harness and leash handy for any more dangerous situations where it would still be necessary.

Ezra not needing the harness would be a huge improvement in growth and hopefully someday he can make it there!😊

The sound of the waterfall reminds me of the sound of a white noise machine. How does Ezra react to white noise machines (or white noise apps (e.g. for iPhone or iPad))?
If he responds the same way to white noise maybe you can get him to sit on your lap and/or cuddle just like what Simon likes to do sometimes.
If this works I only see two potential downsides:
    1. Simon might get jealous of the extra time and attention that Ezra is getting while sitting on mom’s lap.
    2. Ezra might have a temporary increase in potty accidents while sitting on mom’s lap if he gets too involved in the sitting on mom’s lap experience (including playing with mom’s hair, etc). This would be just like what would sometimes happen with Simon when he was starting to potty train. Given that this is likely to be a temporary downside (like it was with Simon) it’s probably worth it. The extra bonding is probably worth a little extra laundry in the short-term.
These two downsides might be worth it, though, if there is an improvement in math, reading, communication, or other important skills at the same time. Who knows, Ezra might learn to say a few words here and there and also learn to do more with his iPad in terms of communication.
As long as Simon continues to get the level of comfort and one-on-one attention from everyone that he needs to, and continues to move forward developmentally things should work out pretty well in the long term for both of them.

Water is very calming for someone with autism but it's also killed many autistic kids drowning in pond's.

Yeah, have to be very careful around water for sure. 😊

That’s true. It’s also why it’s important for Ezra to have the toddler leash. It allows him to enjoy these things as safely as possible.

I notice in many of these scenes Simon seems to act almost neurotypical even though he’s level one.
I wonder if maybe the onesie that he’s wearing (and possibly the diaper as well) might provide enough compression to be calming for him.
You may notice the same thing with Simon at his current age at nighttime with his pajamas and his nighttime diaper (especially if it’s wet). There’s a possibility that if you check his nighttime diaper before he has gone to bed he might have already used it (for urination). If you notice this Simon’s wetting at night might not actually be sleep wetting. Don’t worry about it this is still pretty normal (and doesn’t actually count as misbehavior since it’s not being done for manipulation or out of spite) even at his current age and it can be a very effective method for relaxation/self-soothing especially in the early years. The warmth and the swelling of the sodium polyacrylate crystals from the wetness is likely to be calming for him much like a hug. As long as the evening/nighttime and early morning diaper usage doesn’t have too much of an effect on his daytime training the pros of letting him continue with this probably outweigh the cons (at least currently).
By the time Simon gets into kindergarten or first grade you might look into easing Simon into other relaxation techniques that might be similarly effective for him at nighttime and in the early morning. At that point you can begin to work on his nighttime training if he is interested. Given his possible PDA you probably don’t want to push this too soon, though.
