    My high school has a construction class which I’m in currently and I really love it. I love creating things and seeing them come to life. My interests are building, plants, and the outdoors so landscape architecture sounds perfect for me. My yard at home has also inspired me to learn about landscaping because the design is extensive so my yard looks like a park. I help my parents take care of it all the time and I actually like doing the work. So much work was put into the design 20+ years ago and it still looks amazing. I would really like creating things people can enjoy for a long time. For a long time I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life but I think this is it.

    Interesting video by Janice working in a high profile private landscape architectural company. For all of you high school students and perhaps disillusioned first year college students (honestly folks a degree in history or music appreciation does not pay the bills), the field of landscape architecture is a very rewarding vocation and profession to enter. It's takes hard work to learn and practice, but in the end when you are standing in front of that park, or waterfront, or college campus that you helped design and watching people enjoy using it everyday, it's all worth it. I would take issue with Janice on one item, Most important things in landscape architecture are the ability to convey your designs to your client and the public in graphic, verbal and written forms. People who must sign on the dotted line and fund your dream need to fully understand and buy into your dream, you need to move that dream into reality through your graphic, written and verbal skills. Good luck students from a 44-year long, licensed landscape architect......what a ride it's been.

      Hi, I'm a college student with 1 year of generals under my belt, I have been considering landscape architecture and am wondering what is the best path to pursue it. Is there a possibility of getting hired and being trained on the job without college? Is a regular architecture or design degree necessary, and also how much of the job is office work, and how much of it is visiting the work site?

    • @richarddrum9970
      @richarddrum9970 3 роки тому +1

      Peter Fenter .........this is a long answer so I'm responding in two separate replies. First, nearly all if not all states in the United States require you to be licensed through a state board to both practice the profession of landscape architecture and to refer to yourself as a landscape architect in a public venue. Acquiring that license usually requires a 4 year degree from an accredited university and a few years experience under the mentorship of a practicing landscape architect and to take and pass the national LA licensing exam. Sounds like a lot but remember you will be designing outdoor structures, roadways, utilities and other features as a professional landscape architect that could pose a threat to people's health and safety. So taking the required classes at an accredited university is the pathway to get licensed and get a good paying job in a private practice office or in one of several Federal or state government agencies. Even the US Navy hires civilian landscape architects to do design at their bases, they are very cool people. The second replay will have another pathway.

    • @richarddrum9970
      @richarddrum9970 3 роки тому +2

      Peter Fenter .........OK, so here is the second pathway to maybe attaining work as a landscape designer or just maybe a landscape architect. You need to find a well-established landscaping company that both designs and constructs landscapes including hardscapes, pools, fountains, parking lots, storm sewers and plant materials for residential, commercial and institutional locations. If that company has a landscape architect on the payroll doing design work, you might be able to be mentored as a landscape designer (not fully a landscape architect per se) and gain experience over time that might qualify you to take the national LA licensing exam, maybe, depends upon the state you are in and what their requirements are to take the test. Meanwhile if you are in college, I recommend that you take classes in biology, botany, horticulture, environmental sciences, and art (hand drawing), and become skilled in using computer aided design such as Sketchup to be better able to handle a job in the landscape industry and be trained there. It's hard work, but I enjoyed my time at a design/build landscape company where I honed my skills as a landscape architect, never understand your designs until you have to build them, ouch😳good luck Peter.

    My grandfather who is a Civil Engineer told me that here in the Philippines people now don’t use architect’s since anyone can access pictures on internet and can easily tell what design of house they want to build… Then he told me he doesn’t want to discourage me from wanting to be a architect, but his point was right and also it was a good timing because I was struggling to pick a course in college since I was still not sure in architecture but then I realize I was really fond of nature and I like designing parks especially in roblox… So I was so happy that I finally found my career!!! I’m proud to say I’m a future Landscape Architect (Sorry for my bad english)
