Thanks I just picked up a $60 m50 and wanted to get the head off . This helps that I can do it without the specialty tools . Just like the m20 ❤

Looking into tackling this job myself and this video is gonna be HUGE for me. I’ve got the entire cooling system overhaul on the way (water pump, thermostat+housing, radiator, etc.) but before I do that I gotta pull the head to do the gasket and get it checked for warps/cracks at a machine shop. big thanks for the vid

valve cover note, mine also had the random oil at times even with a gasket replacement at a shop, I ended up replacing the whole valve cover and gasket myself. My valve cover had like micro fractures in the plastic and the oil would basically swet through the fractures. and then found the shop used zero gasket sealer so probably added on to it some

I’m having head gasket issues with mine or worse could even be a possible cracked head. Either way both jobs require the same labor so this video is going to help me out A LOT. Thanks brother lol.

Gotta put a magnet on those l8fters to keep them in place. They need to go back on the bore they came out of. Bare minimum label them with a sharpee and place where they came out

Video was great and very descriptive but when I was removing the Vanos system without the proper Vanos tool I stripped the gear and had to buy a new Vanos gear. It was cheap at the junkyard, but just to warn anyone trying to do this, it is worth it to buy the Vanos tool.

Just slightly rotate the crank while your pulling it out and it works just like having the tool

just blew my HG of S52turbo, stock unopen engine after 1y of beating start build pressure in coolant , no misfire or wet exhaust , so just boost lift the head I guess. And same thing - leaking out of cyl.3 and cyl.4

    Hollow cams..
    How awsome..
Just don't sneeze while loosing the cam bolts and you will probably be ok..
    Maybe..

Probably loose head bolts or a cracked head, not just gasket! Check head bolts first and re-torque to 65-75 lb-ft. Forget liberal TTY BS, if they are loose torque them! :)

Are you sure you have to take the cams out to take the head off

I'm asking everywhere i can before taking to much apart on my 92 325is and hope you might be able to answer a question.
To replace worn and brittle timing chain guide rails (the one operated by the plunger type tensioner on the side of the cylinder head), do you need to take off the tmobile chain front cover?

Did you get your answer ?

    • @DamonFeyOutdoors
      @DamonFeyOutdoors 21 день тому

Turns out the answer was yes. Thanks for asking.
I'm running into another issue after pulling and surfacing the head, and I'm not sure it's worth it to me to keep messing around with it as it seems I may need to remove the engine to work on it or replace it.
      Thanks again for checking in

kinda late response but the head can easily be pulled without pulling the engine. youd spend much much more time doing that. only difference is just leave the manifold bolted to head just undo the lower connection down the pipe.

For now I just want to get it to a point where it's essentially fully refreshed and 100% reliable. I want to keep it NA for as long as possible and maybe do cams and M50 intake in the future.
