Normally, that tournament is known to be really rowdy. Especially in the 16th hole, and the course it TPC Scottsdale. Also, Tiger Woods was arguably the hottest athlete at the time
I'm no Tiger lover, but this might partially explain it: "Uresti has expounded upon his memory of the event in recent weeks, revealing that he never actually saw the shot go in, as part of a strategy to avoid watching Woods swing and consequently falling out of rhythm in seeing a player who swiped so violently at the ball. He also gave clarity as to the duo’s awful first high five attempt following the hole-in-one, stating that the fear of the extra adrenaline in Woods’ high-five caused him to hesitate and induce the awkward moment."
Daniel Barwatt, yeah, I can agree to that but Bill Russell, Sam Jones, Tom Heinsohn, K. C. Jones, Tom "Satch" Sanders, John Havlicek, Jim Loscutoff, Frank Ramsey, and Robert Horry all have more NBA championships then Michael Jordon but that doesn't make them better champions or players.
sure, but the pure stat of just more majors won or heck even tournaments in general isn't such a big deal to claim someone as the greatest champion. if you want to go on who won the most then you should say sam snead is the greatest champion to ever live having won the most tournaments. I think to say someone is the greatest champion is all about not how many they won, but how they won. Tiger winning by 12 shots in my books makes him a far greater champion and like you say, player in general.
This would be one of the best golf moments and videos ever caught on camera. The commentary, tigers hit, the cheer after only hitting the ball, gets a hole in 1 and tigers celebration. Could watch this over and over
@@Bubbles99718 You should hear some Long Drivers hit long irons. I was up to 134mph clubhead speed with a 48" driver on my best day, but hearing a couple of guys with mid-high 140mph driver clubhead speeds while they hit long irons made me put my clubs in the car and go home.
This shot is what literally started the road to the 16th hole being the loudest hole on Earth. I live here in Phoenix, and have been to the Open at least a dozen times. They literally built the stadium around that hole, and down the full length of the fairway over the next couple years after Tiger's shot. Now it feels and sounds like a packed college football stadium, only louder!
Right with you, Sean..I carried a "ten" for a very long time, and have many, MANY times been in the '70's. But no ace. Perhaps 20 eagles, though, and one missed albatross by a foot.
I find it absolutely amazing that he managed to get a hole-in-one on this particular hole. One of the best spectator holes in golf. No other par 3 on tour holds so many spectators. It's as if he said in his head - "Listen Tiger...you may as well get a hole-in-one now, look at all these people."
I really hope he recovers and is able to play again. I know he’ll never be like he was in his prime, but his presence on the course is just unexplainable. We’ll never see anyone like Tiger again. He’s the greatest golfer of all time; I don’t give a dam what anyone says.
Yeah even if there ever is anyone else just as good at some point in the future, like in a few hundred/thousand years, Tiger Woods will always be remembered as the original iconic legend
+notformebeaky I would imagine hes off his game due to not whoring around anymore. A man has to spread his seed and when hes not doing that.. he sucks at golf.
Not only did he get a hole in one, but he did it with thousands watching him from behind him and ahead of him at the green. This is like making a near full court shot to win the NCAA championship game or NBA Finals, or hitting the game winning home run to win the World Series in the 7th game.
That has to be one of the greatest moments in golf , people are throwing their hats and bottles and everything out of admiration and respect , unbelievable scene
I was there. Watching on a different hole. Everyone stopped, wondering what happened. A camera man up on a platform yelled down and told Everyone what happened.
Tiger has literally done it all in his career. 6-peat Jr and Amateur titles, 15 Majors, and 20 hole-in-ones over his career (3 on the PGA tour '96/97/98).
He is bigger than the sport of Golf. Only Athlete I have seen that transcends their sport. Looks like a crazy South American Match with that crowd. Unreal.
I saw this live on television when I was just a kid and I thought this was normal golf. I had no idea I was watching one of the greatest hits of all time.

To have the crowd already that excited and then to hole your shot???? Tiger was unreal during his prime reign. Just amazing.
that crowd is always excited lol...it's called beer :)
No doubt lol
To be fair, the crowd at the 16th in Phoenix is pretty shit faced by 8 in the morning lol.
U.S fans are disgustingly behaved during tournaments.
Yeah it's crazy...the difference between this tournament and the Masters. You burp at the Masters and you'd probably get thrown out...lol

"They're gonna go nuts when he hits this thing" and that's with not even expecting an ace. What a memorable shot.
When can u expect an ace? xD
It's actually a tradition fans do on that hole of that course. As soon as the ball is hit, they scream & go nuts.

Nvm. I take that back. Crowd was definitely more hyped here.
