This was a free mower, but once I cleaned it, it looks to be in really good shape. So why would someone give this mower away?

I used to think like that, but I had a snowblower that I beat my brains out trying to get the old carb to work, without success (it sort of worked). Replaced it and so far so good. I think I spent $15 for the new carb. But I did have to wait 3 weeks for it.

Tecumseh Engines are usually simple, and easy to service. It's true that many people don't like them, and the company had quality control issues prior to the end of production in late 2008. Tecumseh got an undeserved bad reputation many years earlier, because people simply didn't take time to understand how to service them correctly, or know what they were working on. I really like Tecumseh Engines, and I preserve all of them I can get. This is the cleanest free lawn mower I have ever seen.

At my shop we always try to save original parts. So we definitely do more rebuilds than replacing carbs. The original carbs on these are a lot better compared to the chinese replacements. That's saying a lot considering how much I hate Tecumseh engines lol. I've seen these aftermarket carbs come back after just a couple months with all sorts of issues. Heated ultrasonic cleaner with simple green gets 90% of these varnished carbs back to new.

thank you Kevin Brown, and yes, I would suspect that the carbs will have issues come up later on Sooner than later, but the thing is, it was going to happen anyway, because the person using the mower isn't going to take care of it anyway. It's just a real shame.

Detailed tutorial and logical sequence. Still have to disassemble old carb to see if it is reusable. In this case, the old carb was cleaned and reinstalled to show that it still leaks. This, replacement was necessary. If it is just a solo project, then rebuilding would be also a good option. Really enjoy the calm narration and understandable pace. Excellent DIY video and worthy of sharing with others which I will do.

Even if the motor was damaged it was worth picking up. Properly maintained engines will out-live multiple mower decks. I have a "Frankenstein" mower with the motor off a Poulin that rusted out, and the deck from an MTD that had a damaged engine. Almost all store brands were built by MTD anyway.

I recently worked on my father's Earthquake Versa garden tiller and narrowed the problem to the carb. I knew someone else had worked on it and tried to clean the carb with with some kind of ultrasonic device with limited success. I noticed a new carb was only $20 online, so I ordered a new one and it runs perfectly. I judged that another removal and cleaning of the carb with low chance of success was well worth $20 and I was right in that instance. I recently worked on a two year old mower for a customer. It had a Honda GCV160 engine. He was using ethanol gas, and the entire fuel system was destroyed. I replaced everything but the tank. All of the gaskets crumbled in my hand, and both fuel lines were collapsed internally. That was the worst fuel system I have ever seen, and I have worked on 20 year old mowers that sat outdoors for years. I was amazed that ethanol could do that much damage in such a short amount of time.

I'd add a disclaimer on the "use brake cleaner instead," only use non-Chlorinated brake cleaner to clean intake and fuel system parts as the Chlorinated kind (usually labeled non-flammable) can decompose to phosgene gas if some of it gets into the combustion chamber and someone breaths just a tiny amount of the exhaust, it only takes a few ppm to do permeant lung damage and/or kill someone, many welders have found out the hard way using chlorinated brake clean to prep weld surfaces.

It’s a real shame that the only thing preventing you from saving the original carb was a replacement needle seat, especially given how easy and inexpensive that replacement is. There’s a special, inexpensive tool to remove and install the seat and the seats themselves are dirt cheap, especially if purchased in bulk. I just replaced my first one on a mower after cleaning and it started first pull and ran flawlessly. The carb is so simple and easy to clean compared to some 2-cycle engines I was amazed at the simplicity of the design.

Since I’m just teaching myself small engine work and acquiring abandoned equipment to repair and sell on I’ll try to repair everything I can before replacing any parts. I want to see exactly what causes issues so I have mental images for the future, plus I’m just a curious person and like to understand how things work and/or fail. Also the satisfaction of solving an issue myself rather than throwing parts at it. Since this is hopefully going to be a secondary income for me my time is less valuable and also I’m not doing repairs for customers so there isn’t someone waiting for their equipment. I tried fixing up a Honda HRR mower that was overrevving but there were several things wrong with it that made me conclude that the engine was a total loss. The first is that the oil was low and completely burnt, meaning that this thing was revving very high with low dirty oil. It made a scraping noise as it ran, which meant that the piston was rubbing against the cylinder wall. Second, someone screwed with the engine so bad that even the slightest adjustment to the governor would cause the engine to either run at a very low speed or an extremely high speed, there was no in between. It couldn’t have been the carburetor because it was completely spotless on the inside. This one was free, so I decided to use it for parts since the carburetor was still good along with several other parts

Here in Australia I have three old Tecumseh Victa mowers I have come to, non run. All have a similar engine to this.
One runs when you use starter spray. It has oil weeping it near the carburettor area and the air cleaner like this one is saturated in oil and dirt.
The other has a cracked fuel tank and the previous owner said he replaced the carburettor but the motor stalls when it warms up.
The third I got for the fuel tank and any other parts I can use for the other two. Person I got it off says the engine is no good -didn't specify.

Looking at the overall condition of this mower, it looks like it was used for a season or two, and then had likely been sitting for at least four or five years, if not longer. It was likely still running when they stopped using it. The issues it had were related to it sitting.

a simple storage trick to keep the carb clean is to run the mower until there is no gas left in the system. then put half a cup of transmission fluid in the gas tank. pull the engine a few times to work the fluid through the system.
the trans fluid prevents any drying gasoline residue from forming sludge thus keeping the carb clean. tranny fluid will not harm any of the plastic or rubber components.
in the spring then fill the tank with fresh gas and let the mower sit for an hour. the mower will then start normally. the first tank will be smoky as the mower burns of the tranny fluid gas mixture. just use the mower normally and refill with fresh gas for the rest of the season.
this works for any gas powered equipment.

Every carb can be saved if you clean it for hours in a ultra sonic cleaner and rebuild it. Or you can just order a new one and be done. Carbs in the states seem to be more or less free. Here in Sweden a Briggs carb can cost up to 100 dollars

For instance, the OEM carb on a GCV160 engine is $13. If the gaskets on the old carb need to be replaced, the cost of the gaskets will exceed the cost of a new carb. Ethenol gasoline sells more carburators than any other cause.
Most small engine repair shops agree fuel damaged carbs are the most common repair they see!
Everyone seems to think it should be covered by warranty (because the owners manual didn't specifically tell them to not store the equipment for long periods of time with gas in it) the owners manual says it can RUN on fuel with up to 10, or 15% ethenol!
Their argument is there is fuel in my car all year long....
Another note: Tecumseh carburetor frequently leak if improperly assembled (the seat for the float needle if installed upsidedown will leak nonstop)! I have often found homeowners install a shutoff valve in the fuel line instead of correctly reinstalling the seat.

These tecumseh motors are not my favorite at all. You must take the muffler off to acess the bolt to remove the carb with a deep socket. You should not remove the intake manifold. Doing so tears the gasket which will cause it to leak not drawing a correct vacuum to pull in fuel. I always blast these in the ultrasonic cleaner at full temperature. After it's boiling for a while you can push out the emulsion tube. You must replace the O-rings (size 006). The idle circuit also is very weak and the only way I get them going is with the ultrasonic cleaner.

If that is a LEV 115 or LEV 120 engine it will be very powerful if the carburetor is adjusted properly. I wonder if the replacement carburetor has any provision for adjustment (such as different calibration bowl nuts to choose from)
the LEV engine seems to have reversed the placement of the exhaust and intake valves and ports compared to older model Tecumseh engines. The original carb might have had a plastic part inside the "center leg" that could get damaged by carburetor cleaner. "Nozzle" ?
Should splice a fuel shut off valve into the fuel line and use it before putting machine away after use.

For example, I have an older Homelite trimmer and I don't even know where to begin. Are there more specialized sellers you would recommend above Amazon? Do I need to remove the old carb first to identify it? I would rather remove it immediately before replacing it, otherwise I'll probably screw up putting the new one on. Personally I'm a fan of Tecumseh, especially with the muffler and carb on one side. It makes tipping it over really easy and eliminates guesswork on which side to tip it onto. I don't understand why you need to remove the muffler to get to the carb, I just use a skinny Phillips head and go bottom to top and boom it's off! The only thing that bothers me is the linkage, I'm always worried I'll stretch the springs. My personal opinion on the worst small engine is the newer Briggs classics that have plastic shrouding, for some reason the carburators are so volatile, too fast, too slow, and if it's not right it overheats. There's some sciences with that I need to understand better but until I do it just feels scary. This is all fairly biased because the first mower I ever had was a Briggs quantum that had a short rope and never ran for me, and the first one that did was a Tecumseh. I suppose the carb issues are from putting diaphragm and gaskets in the wrong order though. Great video and keep up the good work! I look forward to more!
