Imagine making a whole career off of convincing people you had an annoying voice.
This generation is fucked because they believe everything on the internet. THIS IS A JOKE!!! LISTEN TO THE SHOW, THATS NOT HIS VOICE
@@TheSYPHERIA You don't even know what generation I belong to, so uh.. what?
I remember hearing Gilbert was pissed about them playing that message of his real voice. It's really impressive how he has managed to appear in his character for decades without almost ever being heard using his real voice.
Yeah. We all knew that it wasn't his real voice, it's just really weird that no one looked him straight in the eye and told him to chill tf out and talk like a normal person.
It was a different time back then.
He spent a season on SNL using his real voice. He did plenty of movies and tv in his real voice in the 80's. It's not a real mystery.
He actually does use his real voice during part of his old stand up routine, but it seems like he's doing an impression of a normal sounding person. Kinda genius really.
@@Iampatrix I feel kind of stupid not knowing this, that he used to use his normal voice all the time. I just had never heard it before, being from after that time.
Thanks for the info on it.
@@Karemaker yeah, I'm old enough to remember his standup heh. But he does stay in character the majority of the time so lots of people don't know. Even during his routine the audience usually didn't know that was his real voice, which is why it always got a huge laugh. This man who's always hunched over, squinting, and screaming suddenly looks normal out of nowhere...it was a good bit.

Staying in character for so long to appease strangers for gratification is a living nightmare. Maybe now he can rest lol king?

If you want to listen to a whole interview in his real voice, one was released after he died ua-cam.com/video/6x9U9ojBeyQ/v-deo.html
I'm not sad, I'm impressed. Guy never stops acting until he's in private. His life itself could be a movie
Oh very much think all the movies that have been made that we're all lost interest in . You go Gilbert
Guy: "Hey, aren't you Gilbert Gottfried?"
Gilbert: *in his normal voice* "No, but I get that a lot."
Guy: "Oh, okay."
*guy leaves*
Gilbert: "Works every time."
It’s still hard to believe that this is his real voice. Especially crazy that this and his SNL work are the only examples I’ve been able to find where he’s not doing the voice. He recorded hundreds of episodes of his own podcast “in character”, talking for hours at a time in a voice that’s apparently not natural to him, and it never slipped or faltered once. I guess since he’s done the voice consistently through his career, it became pretty natural to him.
Still weird though, imagine being his personal friend and doing something like a podcast with him, and having an hour long conversation with him using a totally different voice than he does in private.
After he died someone on spotify released a pre-interview from 2008 and it's the same voice at the beginning as here. Proof it wasn't a bit.

I met Gilbert Gottfried when I was the Front Office Manager at a hotel he was staying at. I asked him for his autograph (which I really shouldn't have done - but it was back in the 80's - a long time ago) and he looked and sounded completely normal and totally unlike his persona. He was sad that he didn't have any pictures with him to sign for me but was very happy to sign a message on the hotel's letterhead. I thought he was very kind and good-hearted. A really nice man. I still have that autograph framed on my rec room wall.
Honestly Gilbert just seems like the kind of guy who's just fun to hang around with
'80s* Don't know why people write it like "80's." That would mean something that belongs to the number 80, or "80 is/has." :-P I know, even professionals make that mistake, but it gets grating seeing it all the time. 🤣
You say it's on your rec room wall? Where do you live, and what is your address? Oh and what times are you not home?😏😃
I am just so blown away right now. my entire life I thought he really spoke like that. Him and Bobcat Goldthwait have shocked me for life.
+AceTheFace954 -- Yeah, but Bobcat Goldthwait's natural voice is just a calmer version of his onstage voice. I can still recognize his voice. It still has that nervouse, shaky tone. Whereas Gilbert Gottfried sounds like an utterly different person.
Also, I can't talk about Bobcat without mentioning what a great filmmaker I think he is. _World's Greatest Dad_ was a masterpiece, IMO, the best movie Robin Williams ever starred in. Bobcat wrote and directed that. _Shakes the Clown_ was very impressive for a first-time, low-budget film. I think writing and directing was his true calling in life, although he is very funny in stand-up and the Police Academy movies. I used to listen to his first album, _Meat Bob,_ repeatedly! I'm a big fan, is what I'm saying.
As for Gilbert Gottfried, his _Dirty Jokes_ album is delightful. A modern-day comedian simply telling one joke after another. No stories, no recurring themes -- just simple, filthy-dirty jokes. What a concept!
Ben Culture I never knew he made his own films. I always just thought he was one of the funniest guys I had ever seen growing up. someone I can never take serious because he's so damn funny lol. well I'm impressed. that's quite a talent.

I'm part of a...uh..religion ! that believes, views, and worships The Gottfried as the true returned messiah, this video is a test that each brother has to endure to test our faith, so to me, this is like findig out that Jesus never resurrected.
I believe this religion pre-dates Zoroastrianism and even Atenism. Gottfrieidism is the original monotheistic faith according to Donald A. Mackenzie, anthropologist and historian.

Oh snaps, I'm almost 40 years old and I've gone my whole life thinking that that is how that man actually sounds when he speaks 🤣🤣🤣
I can’t believe he has kept up that character for all these years.
Yea. It used to be that people got famous on their stage character and played that character in every movie and show they were in since their name and character were what drew people in. Now a days it seems to be entirely about if the actor can pull off the adapted fictional character more than playing his own persona.
Look at Tiny Lister he stayed in character as Debo(and a little bit of zeus) until the day he died. 😂

rest easy Gilbert. thank you for the years of laughs.
Oh he sounds like a normal person and not a baby that chain smokes.
Man, now that makes me wonder why he never did the voice of Baby Hermann. That woulda been cool.
I can confirm this. About 30 years ago (!) I saw him at Caroline's. This was a couple of years after he was canned from SNL. He did his set in the voice we all know, and KILLED. A guy at my table was hyperventilating because he couldn't stop laughing to catch his breath.
After the show, I spot Gilbert at the bar and go up to thank him, and tell him how I was a fan since SNL. He said, I must really be a fan to still like him after that season. He was super friendly, and yes, his voice was smooth and calm, just like this. His eyes were also wide open, and not squinting like they are whenever we see him on TV, etc.
My take is that every time he's on air, in whatever context, he's doing part of his act.
I understand he was a very kind man. Thank you for the laughs Mr. Gottfried. RIP
He was a very talented man! I just loved how shrill his voice was in TV shows and cartoons. RIP
Is that the voice you imagine a serial killer being? It sounded like a perfectly normal person to me....
I worked with him a few times on the Tonight Show. I totally remember this about him. The voice we all know recorded for the pre-tape jokes was 100% dead on that we shot. One of those days after he came into the wardrobe main room, asked to use our phone and I was floored how gentle and almost quiet he was. He’s a very kind man, good to all departments he worked with, was very sweet with me. I really got a kick to hear and see him off camera.

I discovered this in 2005, I was managing a restaurant at a casino where he was performing, and I sent our room service server home since it was slow, so I ended up taking food up to Gilbert's room, and I got to hear that normal voice, mind blowing! They've talked about Teller not talking many many times in various interviews. The first time I heard him speak, it was very unsettling, but you get used to it after a while. I got to meet the duo in Milwaukee like 27-ish years ago, and he and I had a nice chat about bear traps. He signed very few autographs, as people were shy about approaching him. Penn, on the other hand, was on the other side of the theater, wiped the stage blood off of his face with my then GF's shirt, _THEN_ he signed it.

I remember years ago seeing Gilbert Gottfried in an episode of the Nickelodeon show "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" He played someone working at an afterlife radio station. This kid who was played by Ryan Gosling kept hearing a strange voice coming from the radio of a car and traced it to Gilbert at this creepy radio station. What made the whole thing so great was that the voice Gilbert was doing was that of the actor James Mason. I mean it was an incredible impression of Mason; Gilbert nailed it. Of course 99.999% of the kids watching that show didn't have a clue who James Mason was or that Gilbert was doing an impression of him. I don't think Gilbert cared though. He just did James Mason's voice because it amused him. That's what makes him so great.
