This worked sooo well for me, the buns were fluffy and full of flavor and the custard was creamy and not too sweet. I baked 4 and steamed 4 and I have to say I prefer the steamed ones, although the baked ones were still incredibly delicious. I didn't have a steamer on hand so I looked up substitutes and ended up using balls of tin foil and a plate to steam them and I can safely say that it works. Either way, I'm going to the supermarket as soon as possible to buy a proper steamer for when I next make these. Thank you so much for the recipe!!
Instead of a steamer, you can get your biggest cooking bowl and put a small bowl inside it. Pour water into the bowl about 3/4 ish and pour water around the inner bowl as well. Place a plate on top and put the buns inside it over parchment paper. Hope this helps, I saw it in a different video, but I think it would work!

heres the full recipe written out! custard buns ingredients: custard - 2 egg yolks (can substitute with 100g boiled + mashed sweet potato) - 30g sugar (1/4c) - 20g butter - 200g milk - 20g starch powder (2tbsp) {any starch: potato, corn, etc} - 3-4 drops vanilla essence/extract bun skin - 260g all purpose flour - 26g sugar - 4g salt - 4g baking powder - 3g yeast - 160g warm milk - 10g cooking oil + chocolate pen for decoration! instructions: making custard! add your 2 egg yolks or sweet potato into a medium sized bowl and mix with 30g of sugar until combined. next, put a saucepan on low heat and add in your 20g butter and 200g milk. stir until the butter has melted. pour the milk mixture into the sugar and egg yolks and stir well. add in 20g of starch powder and mix well. pour the mixture back into the pot and add in 3-4 drops of vanilla essence. boil the mixture over low heat until it thickens to a thick pudding texture, constantly stirring to ensure the mixture doesn’t burn. pour the mixture into an airtight container and put the mixture into the freezer for 20 minutes. take the mixture out and divide it into 8 equal parts. roll each part into a ball using your hands. put your balls of custard into the container again and freeze for at least 3 hours. making the bun skin! mix 260g all purpose flour, 26g sugar, and 4g salt together in a large bowl. add 4g baking powder and 3g of yeast. then, add in 160g of warm milk and mix well. use your hands to knead the dough well together. flatten your dough slightly onto an unfloured work surface and add in 10g cooking oil to make the dough smooth. knead the oil in for 3-5 minutes. once the dough is smooth and springy, divide it into 8 equal parts. each ball of dough should be 56-57g. cover the dough balls with plastic wrap to keep them from drying out as you roll each piece of dough into a smooth ball. rest under plastic wrap for 5 minutes. using a bowl, trace the top edge of a bowl onto 8 pieces of parchment paper, and cut those pieces out. take a ball of dough, and flatten it with your palm until it is about 10cm in diameter. take a ball of frozen custard and put it in the center of your flattened dough circle. wrap the custard with the dough, and pinch to close the bun. make sure the bun is round. put the bun onto one of the pieces of parchment paper. you can use a bit of extra dough to make the ears and the nose of the bear. cooking the buns! put the buns in a hot steamer but with water that is not too hot to touch (warm water.) wait for 30 minutes. steam the buns for 12 minutes in boiling water (medium-high heat.) after twelve minutes, turn off the heat but do not open the lid for 5 minutes. use a chocolate pen to draw the eyes and nose of the bear. and youre done! enjoy your custard buns ^^

I made these buns today. It was amazing! My only query to the creator is how did you roll up the custard into balls. I followed exactly as stated in the video, but I wasnt able to roll them. I weighed equally and somehow formed them into ragged balls. Because I couldnt roll the custard well, the buns after filling weren't smooth. I decided that this will be my first and last trial. But after they were steamed and let cool, I took a bite. The custard buns are not overly sweet and tasted just right to the tastebuds. I would make them again with alternate fillings or just plain! Loved the texture of steamed buns. The recipe measurements are spot on.

Got the custard cooling in the freezer... going to make balls . Then might make the buns today, might tomorrow. While waiting I beat the egg whites and added a little salt and sugar and made meringue. It's happy in the fan oven. 100°c for at least 90 minutes.
Hi! thanks for the recipie, i love it! I have a doubt about the "starch" you use to make the custard filling because i followed the instruction on the video and the result was a very creamy though liquid custard and couldn't make the balls even after putting it in the fridge. Thanks you so much!
@buni Yes, opening that pot while they are supposed to be resting is really not good for the product Leave it alone. It needs the slightly warm environment and repeatedly (or at all) opening the lid messes everything up.
@@may-zz1uo Opening a steamer lets the steam escape. So leave the steamer alone to let it do its work. (When the buns are resting before cooking, they are just being incubated, basically, or warmed. When they are being cooked, the lid prevents the steam from escaping. In both cases, opening the lid to "check" on them is doing a disservice to the buns.) I hope you make them and enjoy them. :-)

I just ate one from the first batch and they are delicious! I made the custard last night which was nice because I didn't have to do all that today as well. The ears did slide off of my buns while steaming, so now it's not much of a teddy bun anymore, but it still tastes amazing! I would definitely reccomend anyone who watches to try and make these.
So, here are my bits: It tastes like homemade sweet bread and the custard's flavour is very subtle, I would definitely add more sugar or honey. The dough comes very sticky, so I added more flour, like 3 spoons, but then, its easier for the ears to fall off, just use a bit of water in the spot. I've baked in the oven, for the crunchy texture, which I prefer.
I just made this! Tasted really good, however my dough wasn’t as smooth as the video. I kneaded it for 20 over minutes and followed the measurements. I’m not sure why it wasn’t smooth, but it still turned out good and yummy. Also, my custard wasn’t as hmm starchy (?) as the video was. It just turned out like regular custard despite adding the same amount as instructed. Not sure if it needs to stay on heat longer but I rlly didn’t wanna burn it. Eitherways, Will definitely make again and try different fillings!
This worked sooo well for me, the buns were fluffy and full of flavor and the custard was creamy and not too sweet. I baked 4 and steamed 4 and I have to say I prefer the steamed ones, although the baked ones were still incredibly delicious.

Ahhh muchas gracias uwu jsjsjs . Ya quiero hacerlos 👀
JALO A HACERLO
Did you use starch powder like the recipe called for in the custard? Or flour substitute?
@@nafl350 I used cornstarch.
I sent these with my sister for her lunch and she shared with her friends and they loved it!
I want to make this for my grandparents when they come back home. That looks so delicious and great!!!
I never thought that custard buns could be steamed...
They look so delicious 😍🤤
I just want to eat them straight away from my screen 🤤😂
just made these and they are so delicious!!! will definately try again I love them so much. I didnt have a chocolate pen so I used some nutella and a skewer to apply his eyes and nose
the whole time the bread was being kneeded i was thinking of the dream richard waterson was having about being a bun... "Im a bun im a bun, im a tasty tasty bun. to be baked and kneeded oh how fun, you can have me as a snack you can have me with your lunch" something something yatta yatta its a great song
😀
I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who peels steamed buns 🤣
I made these today and they were amazing, I layed them on the table while my family sit there and we ate these delicious buns. they enjoyed it so much. 10/10 I’d definitely recommend this recipe.

I made these today & they were SO DELICIOUS. Everyone loved them :D
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS RECIPE 🐱
I recently tried to cook for the first time and now I want to make all of these recipes!
Oi pessoal ! Brasileira aqui!
Beijos!

I wanna cook this but freezing something for 4 hours and keeping it secret from my parent's won't go together
If this isn't me--
Why lol? I first thought that u were talking about small siblings but then what's the problem with ur parents?
@@chief4923 that they don't want me to get fatter
@@kaedesakura9274 Oh Same with my grandma , I think we should start exercising or dieting or just our best! :D
I know this is old but you could try doing exercise regularly and then try a new recipe each saturday or sunday! that way your parents won't be as strict :3
I can’t tear them in half if they’re gonna keep staring at me like that...😂 too cute!
(notes to myself)
- rest the buns in the steamer for 20 mins with warm water in the steamer (hot but not too hot that it burns your finger)
@buni
Yes, opening that pot while they are supposed to be resting is really not good for the product Leave it alone. It needs the slightly warm environment and repeatedly (or at all) opening the lid messes everything up.
@@lisahinton9682 thanks, i didnt expect ppl to see this comment 😭
@@may-zz1uo Opening a steamer lets the steam escape. So leave the steamer alone to let it do its work. (When the buns are resting before cooking, they are just being incubated, basically, or warmed. When they are being cooked, the lid prevents the steam from escaping. In both cases, opening the lid to "check" on them is doing a disservice to the buns.)
I hope you make them and enjoy them. :-)
Tq for your recipe .. I have tried it today and my buns turn out beautiful and yummy .. At first i though i would fail but it does not fail at all .. I'm really weak at making dough actually so i'm still practising .. I hope u have a good day 😉❤
what type of starch powder did you use? and cooking oil?
@@julianavan4054 I'm using corn starch and cooking oil but if u want to use corn oil is also okay.
What kind of yeast did you use?
I made these. The conversion from gram to tbsp was a little awkward and I did have to make my own adjustments during the process to get the same result. I coated the custard balls with a layer of chocolate and they turned out very delicious. I used chocolate chips to make the eyes and nose. When I placed them on the hot finished buns they melted a little bit and stayed perfectly in place. My family loved them.
Thanks!
I literally screamed when you peeled the bear’s face off 😱 I mean, what are you gonna do when unfortunately they are so delicious 🤤
These buns are sooo cute😍 it doesn't even bother me that I'm allergic to them & vegan. This is a really cute, relaxing video
"3-4 drops of vanilla"
매일맛나 delicious day: "I'll just do 7 drops."
I notice too ㅋㅋㅋ
To be fair, I also tried to do 3-4 drops and the bottle of vanilla would let me do a drop at a time, so it was more like a splash of vanilla.
just finished making these and eating out, yum! Thanx for this amazing recipe, it was my first try and it went very smoothly!

oii gente eu fiz e deu merda
OBRIGADAAAAA

Tried this today came out good
Recommended to add a bit more sugar and steam for a longer time.
Also make sure the outer bread is really thin.
i stand by this
also, when ur adding salt while making the dough, if it looks like too much, it is. it’s better to have them without salt than to have them really salty and gross.

So, here are my bits:
It tastes like homemade sweet bread and the custard's flavour is very subtle, I would definitely add more sugar or honey. The dough comes very sticky, so I added more flour, like 3 spoons, but then, its easier for the ears to fall off, just use a bit of water in the spot. I've baked in the oven, for the crunchy texture, which I prefer.
for how long did u bake it for and at what temp?
@@sab990 For 20min, it's soft with a crunchy exterior. My oven doesn't have any markings, but I guess it was 185°C.
@@donthugme9691 alright thank you
Too cute to eat. She literally splits the first one's head open and eats its brain. Second one gets its face peeled off :(
I just made this!
