Aalap is very essential part of the traditional music ...srila Prabhupada sang many bhajans in slow alap style and also bhakti vinod thakur has given us the gaura arati which is sung in very beautiful alap kiba jayo ....there can be nothing more traditional than gaur arati ... Sripad aindra Prabhu was the perfect example of some one who inspired millions by his pure chanting ... Alaps are very inspiring and they take you to the deep slow meditative mood of focussing on each word of the holy names .... The whole point is that one should present krishna with the most exquisite form of clasical ragas and raginis ... Automatically as one keeps chanting krishna inspires him with more and more deeper nuances in the science of music which comes from the spiritual realm . As far as non devotional spirit is concerned , it does not matter how you sing it a karm misra Bhakta will always have ulterior motives to impress others that has nothing to do with the alankars and techniques of devotional service As our moment evolves devotees will become better at music and better at shastras and better at using technology None of our acharyas preached in UA-cam but that is also essential in the modern age .. Hence when lord Chaitanya says there are no hard and fast technical rules for chanting ....we need to take the mukya vritti of this statement and accept it as it is ...the most important thing is to chant as much as possible and without offences ...and without ulterior motives .. techniques and details are not important...osrila Prabhupada would have extensively elucidated it in his books which are law books of ISKCON if he felt that ragas and alaps etc were not needed or needed ...both are simply details and donnot effect the mantra in any way .. If the focus is more on musical performance or something else rather than kirtan itself, it is definitely distracting and it is not kirtan anymore. It's a show - to show off musical skills, hairstyle, clothes etc. If we keep kirtan simple, we can definitely focus on it more. That's my experience and experience of many others.
Its very nice we have started discussing how our Hare Krishna kirtans should be. If there's something you don't agree with, no need to be extremely critical or negative about the whole discussion. From such discussions slowly the right way of kirtan will emerge as devotees get more knowlegeable about how Srila Prabhupad wanted these kirtans.
1) Rock music is good for attracting Gen Z people. But normally Rock tune suppresses Holy name, so our focus should be Holy name in kirtans as we advance in Devotional Service. 2) Some devotees have misunderstood about raag and alaap. You accepted what Aindra Prabhu was doing in kirtan was right, but why now you are picking on his style of kirtan by criticising alaap and alankar? Devotees who don't know how to use them, shouldn't use them. But of those kirtaniyas who know how to do it, what do you gain by suppressing them.

For pure devotees there are no rules cause their renunciation is perfect. But why are we mad after chanting Ramo? Why can't say Ram simply and admit the instructions
The interviewers should have included all those western instruments that have been included in kirtans. There's even saxophone , electric guitar in traditional kirtans. Even Krishna Caitanya Swami was using his trumpet for more than a decade in kirtans. Only after sannyasa we don't see him using his trumpet. All these western musical instruments which are born out of mode of passion should be banned in ISKCON. I am surprise they didn't talk about all that is going on in the name of kirtan in the west. Kirtan leaders wearing shorts, some participants wearing bikinis, kirtan leaders with no tilak, no neck beads, - these are the point they should be talking about. Harinam with some dancing matajis like mannequin parade. These are not standards that was set by Srila Prabhupada . Instead they pick on kurtas. At least they are still using kurta, not some t- shirts and pants. How about a podcast on bridge preaching and mantra lounge? These diluted form of preaching that's going on in the form of mantra lounge has influenced even the youths in the east.
