I never understood the appeal of PCD. That's not a girl band, it's just Nicole and her dancers, with Melody providing backup vocals every so often.
I agree. They were clearly trying to capitalize off of the success of other girl groups from the Y2K era. To me their music wasn’t good or memorable at all but we’re still pushed to be the new it girl group of the industry
Their discography is fantastic and so were their videos. If only all of the girls were given a fair chance.
I agree I loved they’re songs growing up and still do but I wouldn’t really consider them a girl group. Even when they got back together just before covid it was still just Nicole singing and the rest as backing dancers.

She was smart not to sign that contract though. TLC ended up bankrupt and received little to no money for years while Crystal was better off financially.
Yes that is why contracts! contracts! and more contracts! Are important! Crystal should’ve had a contract signed with the members that she created the group and the band name and that she should have rights to the name, etc. She should’ve trademarked TLC.

Spice Girls, NSYNC, you name it and everyone has heard of that group. Girl groups and boy groups typically don't last for very long. Members leave the group for a number of reasons. Maybe they want to prioritize other matters in their lives apart from performing with their co-members. Being a performer, in general, is strict business. You aren't always granted the freedom to do whatever you want. Music labels have so much control over their artists that it's practically insane just to think about.
This is especially prevalent in Kpop. Absolute majority of Kpop groups have a longevity of 1-2yrs max. South Korea churns out kpop groups daily, and the music industry in there is absolutely cruel. Artists don't even have enough freedom to look a certain way, let alone artistic freedom.

@@JollyWanker Doubt it will be so. They are arguably bigger than any of the one's you've mentioned. At best they won't be the most streamed Kpop group, but they will most certainly not be forgotten, not in Korea. Take a look at BTS, they're still thriving after almost a decade, so, little to worry about. BTS and Blackpink are the biggest boy and girl band in Kpop, don't believe it will change so easily.
TLC is and will always be THAT girl group

@@maty3161 They were played non-stop on Skyrock and Générations with Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill etc... they definitely had their fanbase for those who listened to this type of music. It's just that R&B and hip hop culture in general was not front and centre back in the day as it now. It was all about pop in France at that time.

I’m 41 and me and my boss were talking about destiny’s Child. I mention Latoya and Latavia being in the group and she was like “Who?😭😭 I believe 10 years younger than me but I was quite surprised that she didn’t know that group was a 4 member group

Destiny's child is huge. I come from Eastern Europe and I remember their cassettes being everywhere. Spice girls were also known there but dc was massive internationally
DC had cassettes while Spice Girls had Cd's everywhere.

Some groups are better as groups. Some groups are really a showcase for one member for them to go solo later. Some groups can go on for decades, others for a few years.
You didn't go QUITE that far back but before The Supremes scored mainstream success they went through 2 other members. Betty McGlown and Barbara Martin. Diana, Mary and Flo are of course the most iconic incarnation of the group and Flo was later replaced by Cindy Birdsong in 1967. Diana left in 1970 for solo stardom but The Surpemes endured until 1977.

OMG Crystal was about to find out there was something wrong with the contract so they had her booted from the group that she founded. Puts that award show speech into a different context.
Worth noting: the most commercially successful solo music career of the Spice Girls was Sporty Spice, whose solo career was quite successful in the UK

You said the Spice Girls don’t rely on a particular lead member to succeed and they could carry on without one member and that’s true in the case of Posh. This configuration clearly works, however, If you take a Sporty or Ginger spice out of the equation, the result is not quite the same.
Mel C has always been the driving force of the group vocally speaking, if she doesn’t turn up, no one can take over her and carry those hard tunes. Her voice is a trademark. Equally a lineup without Ginger lacks some flavour/character and we’ve seen that earlier in the career when she left, they didn’t last long, something was off. I’d argue that that would be the case if either Mel B or Emma weren’t part of the group anymore, whilst with Posh, yeah ofc something is missing (visually) but you’ll pretty much forget she’s not on stage quickly as the other 4 do make up smoothly for their absence and can carry on and fans won’t even notice her absence throughout a concert. Victoria’s main contribution to the group was pointing and yeah acting ‘posh’ but that’s about it. The bottom line is as in the case of Destiny’s Child and Pussycat Dolls, their success depends on any of these four and certainly, doesn’t rest on Victoria.
Farrah never contributed any vocals on any songs the writings on the wall album ( jumping jumping) was already out before she entered the group

Left Eye wasn't gonna leave TLC, I don't know why people keep saying that, she wanted to do solo activities outside of the group but NOT ACTUALLY LEAVE. Her issues were with the Label (creative issues and empty promises) and Chilli & T-Boz were caught in the crossfire of that.

Yes, her name was Kim Hill and she came to will-I-am and suggested they make the group. They opened for Eminem & Outlast and lots of major acts. She left because she wasn't happy with how sexualized they wanted her to be. Fergie didn't join until 2002.
