  • With just two weeks left until our Centenary, we've reached number two in our countdown of our most iconic aircraft. This one's definitely an instant icon: the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II.
    The F-35A Lightning II is our fifth-generation multi-role fighter that - in conjunction with the F/A-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler - is the backbone of Australia’s air combat capability.
    It incorporates comprehensive stealth technology, electronic protection and attack, and advanced countermeasures. Its fused, multi-spectral sensors and advanced networking capabilities provide an unprecedented level of situation awareness.
    With only one week to go, which aircraft do you think is at the top of our list?

      nearly a trillion dollars JSP of pure state of the art design and technology that no other country can copy or recreate it perfectly. We should thank the British because they were the first to introduce VTOL technologies.
      A stealth fighter with vertical takeoff and landing. Just imagine how they integrated two unique technologies into a single aircraft.

    Even if your view about WW2 is that its in the dim dark past (which speaks volumes if that is the case with the RAAF) and you chose a jet. Can someone explain to me how the F35 is more iconic than the Mirage III? Mach 2 fighter,......delta wing and one of the most beautiful and sleek jets to ever serve anywhere??
    I'm genuinely flabbergasted!

      Cant agree more.. though, my father worked on the mirage, and i grew up around them, williamtown and butterworth. If we use the term iconic as the ones most people remember, or feel things about, the f-111 will be more so, though i do have more mirage models than F-111's super hard to split them, i just think that public opinion will win over.. though this list has surprised me before..Cheers

    • @PL4GU3d
      @PL4GU3d 3 роки тому

      It has been in development and has been known about for 20+ years it’s fair to say it’s gained an iconic status given how well known it is, how capable it is and how long it’s been around, even if we on started training/flying our RAAF F-35’s within the last 5-8 years.

    • @doemacmonkey
      @doemacmonkey 3 роки тому +2

      @@PL4GU3d I guess what I’m asking you is, what is your definition of iconic? Yes it’s been in development for ages, yes it’s recognized, although not as widely recognized outside aviation fandom as for instance the Tomcat due to the obvious movie. The F111 was almost unique to the RAAF and at one point WAS unique to the RAAF, and as such I would definitely consider the F111 iconic, we deployed hornets to war zones and flew they for ages, as did we with mirages, but I don’t believe the F35 has done anything yet to earn the title of an iconic RAAF plane. It’s still relatively new, unblooded so to speak, far from unique to our country, is it really already iconic of RAAF operations. In terms of plane type, I would say the VTOL f-35 is more iconic.

  • @christianoakley1686
    @christianoakley1686 3 роки тому +9

    Yeah,..I dont understand this decision?
    It certainly isn't iconic,...it barely has done anything yet. Only 30odd are in Australia and its barely made to a restricted IOC. You have picked an aircraft that has served for 5 minutes in the past 100 years! I hope the RAAF didn't choose this as a prop for a controversial aircraft. I assume the F111 will be number one.
    So aircraft like the Spitfire and the P40 miss out. Two aircraft that defended Australia and bore the brunt of fighting in the Pacific.
    Not to mention the RAAF SQN's such as 3 SQN in the Med that fought with all the MKs of the P40. Also Clive Caldwell, Australia's most prolific Fighter Pilot of WW2 flew both the Spit and P40 and became an ACE in both,...the only man to do so in two theaters.
    The Mirage III misses out, our first Mach 2 fighter. The Canberra Bomber misses out. Served in both Malaya and Vietnam without a break. The longest serving Bomber SQN on operations globally from the end of WW2 to the commencement on the War on Terror.
    Bobby Gibbes, Clive Caldwell, "woof" Arthur, the Jackson brothers, Lou Spence, Dick Cresswell,.....iconic names in the RAAF who flew truly iconic aircarft. All have been ignored for the sake of a glossy promotional moment for an aircraft that barely is in service.
    Terrible decision and in my view is defeats the point of remembering the past 100 years of the Royal Australian Air Force. You have picked an aircraft from the next 100 years.
    Its glossy advertising for the F35 , which is a bit of a disgrace.
    What is the RAAF's definition of iconic and history??

    • @doemacmonkey

      @@doemacmonkey Completely agree. Just a really odd decision. The F35 is the future,..not the past 100 years. I'm convinced good sense has been taken over with a cheap opportunity to promote the F35. Sadly, in my view it suggests volumes on how the modern RAAF revere the past 100 years.

      i could add the beaufighter to your list. remember though ,this is a list of ten out of over 100 aircraft types flown by the RAAF over the years, its not a history lesson, though i have learnt things, my fathers sqdn was 77 so i know of Dick cresswell and the p-40's, maybe we will get another list of "Planes of Importance", I Pontificated about the term iconic on a nother post here so i wont go on again. but i agree th canberrs deserves mention

    • @christianoakley1686
      @christianoakley1686 3 роки тому +2

      @@andrewpuckridge7633 Certainly the Beaufighter could certainly be on the list. Completely agree. The thing about the P40 is Australian pilots shot down more aircraft flying the type than any other aircraft. 3 SQN flew the P40 in its various MK's throughout the war. North Africa, Italy, Port Moresby, Milne Bay just to name a few where the type is synonymous. All the great leaders of the war, earn't their name flying P40s. Bobby Gibbes, Wilfred "Woof' Arthur, Caldwell etc etc. These men were the great leaders in the SW Pacific,...some Commanding P40 SQN's and Wings. What is more iconic RAAF than that??
      I understand the argument regarding history vs the iconic. But surely,...an example like the P40 would fit those boxes better than most other RAAF aircraft??

    We all know that we're going to go ahead as planned and make it an even 100, so let's place the order for 28 F 35B's and get the necessary conversions underway on the Canberra class LHD's. We need to if we want to keep China at bay.

    • @sniper.93c14
      @sniper.93c14 3 роки тому +1

      Conversion of the LHDs would decrease the ability of the ADF to conduct amphibious operations so a third ship would have to be acquired in order to preserve the capability. Since the ADF believe that Amphibious capability is more important than carrier capability. Personally, if the intention was to add a carrier capability, one or two new ships would need to be added to the fleet, and in turn another two or three AWD and it would be better to carry a mix of manned and unmanned fighters (think F-35Bs and navalised Loyal Wingmen) plus helicopters

    • @sniper.93c14
      @sniper.93c14 3 роки тому +2

      @@mike9347 satellite guided isn’t particularly encouraging since satellites are easily jammed. Now you can add in more guidance systems but that increases weight which means you need a bigger engine and in turn the missile becomes bigger and more complex. So a swarm of hypersonic weapons can be countered by EW or they can’t be but because they can’t be countered they are too large and too expensive to have very many of and can be defeated by ships.
      When torpedoes were first invented it was believed that they would make the battleship obsolete but they did not and the doctrine of swarms of small ships armed with torpedoes was proved flawed in the early 20th century and large capital ships endured then as they will continue to now, because they project force. Missiles do not project force they can at best deny areas.
      It’s not just light infantry that are landed but also their accompanying armoured vehicles and would receive fire support from AirPower and warships. So in such a realistic world, yes of course the Infantry can take and hold a beachhead because the only time they would do so is with sufficient support

    • @sniper.93c14
      @sniper.93c14 3 роки тому +1

      @@mike9347 well I’m sorry that got deleted Mike cause I am interested in what you would have said. In a peer on peer conflict ADF is pitiful but I think that what the LHDs really represent is the ability for us to add on to an American task force, while giving us the flexibility to conduct smaller operations ourselves or use them for humanitarian missions.
      Whilst I wouldn’t call the ADF a joke it’s probably a third or a quarter of what it would need to be to really stand on its own. Which is unfortunate but it would cost too much and be difficult to get manpower and other resources more than anything. Defence is really as much an economic problem as a military one.
      So while the ADF may not be enough it definitely is something and in a prolonged war I can easily see it being crafted in something much larger and more capable.

    How many F-35A's are in squadron service with the RAAF at time of writing? Are any of them based in the far north, where they will be needed if they're needed at all? What's its real payload and range, under stealth? How much has it cost to upgrade bases in the north of Australia to provide the enormously elaborate facilities it requires? What are its actual availability and sortie rate figures, in RAAF service? It's on the answers to those questions and others about its real deployability and serviceability that its real value to Australia depends. It's not good enough to trot out a pilot or two to say how gosh-wow it is, if everything goes right. Far more important is how often does something go wrong? And how quickly is it fixed when it does?

    • @devonlord99

      @@devonlord99 Unfortunately, no. If anything is wrong with this aircraft's programming, its systems prevent operation. To put it simply, it doesn't start. There's no such thing as a workaround. That's what "fully integrated systems" means. It's down, until corrected, or if it's a hardware problem, until parts come through, which at present can take weeks. Any glitch at all does that. That's one reason for its wretched availability numbers, as reported by other air forces. Another is false positives. Its average availability for all missions is still below 60%, and the latest numbers I can find on its sortie rate is .4 a day - three a week.

    75 F35’s isn’t enough for the security of Australia. We need to double that, at least. 3 bases should we built . One in Northern WA QLD and NT. We cannot rely on the USA, so independence we must commit. Unstable areas in our region is growing ... rapidly

      We couldn't defend Australia alone regardless, we don't have the budget to compete in numbers, and we have more allies than just the US. Besides, any actual invasion of Australia would be useless and a waste of resources.

    The F35 hasn't earned its place on this list. I can think of three aircraft that deserve to be the top 10 based on their service over the 100 year history and there is only one position to go. Personally, I'd put the CT4 above the F35 given that as the ab initio trainer for over 40 years (including its service at the ADF Basic Flying Training School) it has probably been flown by more RAAF pilots than any other aircraft.

    Maybe you should tell the Australian public that it cost $800k for a helmet for this.
    Maybe you should tell the public that it's not really stealth.
    Maybe you should tell the public how maintenance heavy this F35 is.
    Even the Americans don't like this fighter jet and are considereding a replacement.

  • @Jaiysful
    @Jaiysful Рік тому

    So it sounds like, F35 is designed for stealth (stealth over its own territory?), short range combat (USA's B variant is degisned to work with its navy fleets) what are our A variants for? And collective combat network (so, in other words we have to spend a lot of $$$ and send a lot of it out in order to receive the benefits?). It's almost like Aus is propping up US defence contracts, just like how it scrapped the very capable French sub deal just to re-align with US's naval capability. Peer pressure is one hell of a drug. Poor tax payers.

    The F-35 is an absolute joke and has failed at every step of the way. Not to mention it's about 15 years late!
    It's a great example of how not to design an aircraft. A lesson that should have been learnt back with the developement of the F-111.
