- A legend of rock and roll, Tom Petty formed his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers shortly after his stint with a group called Mudcrutch failed to gain a following. Their first album was released in 1976, and it marked the beginning of an incredible career for the musician. Not only did his band put out 13 studio albums, but he had three of his own solo albums. Petty was truly a rock star to the very end. He sadly died shortly after going on tour for his band’s 40th anniversary. But how exactly did it happen? Saw him at Forest Hills on the last tour. As a Nurse I could tell that it would be his last tour. He was clearly in pain. I think it was about keeping his word and going out with his boots on. There’s dignity in that. And even though he was in pain, he was doing the work that he loved. He was an amazing person. RIP, condolences to the family.
The combinations of drugs that caused his death could kill someone even in perfect health.
I'm a disabled RN, I've had pain for decades. I worked for years in pain. I have 16 screws in my back now and had to stop working awhile ago after 20 yrs as a nurse.
I don't want to assume I know how he felt. But for me, it's about defining who I am on MY terms. NOT on being disabled's terms or pain's terms. Because screw that.
I decide WHO I am & HOW I want to be remembered when my time is up. I still do what I can every day, it's not nearly what I used to be able to accomplish, but I'm definitely NOT a spring chicken 🐔 anymore either 😄.
I'm also looking at my 25th surgery soon to fix my R Achilles tendon, it never ends 🤦♀️
I definitely understand if he wanted to just get through this tour and *then* deal with his hip which I'm SURE was very painful. If he was on a few different meds for pain/anxiety you do get a tolerance over the years so you need more than others would for it to work well enough, it's not hard to take more than you should, especially if your pain is getting worse & worse.

We were there too, came for Peter Wolf who opened the show. He and his band were fabulous, Tom Petty and the HB were very disappointing. We didn't know he was sick, but we saw something was wrong.....
Right. it wasn't performing that killed him, it was the opiates that he got some relief from. what if my employer told me it might kill him to keep me employed? but Tom didn't have the heart to wrap it up and send everyone scattering. he was the real deal.

Tom Petty was one of my father's favorites. 3 and a half weeks ago my dad went into sudden cardiac arrest after a heart attack at home. None of us in the family knew he was dealing with significant heart disease. Even though he was on disability he continued to work a few days a week doing lawn maintenance with his friend for cash to help my mother work less because of her own health related issues. This past Sunday he passed away after 5 days of being removed from a ventilator. My father never went to a doctor. He just pushed through whatever was bothering him. My father didn't drink, smoke or use drugs. He was just a couple weeks away from his 69th birthday. You never know when your time will come.

It was so sad to find out that Tom Petty continued on performing with a broken hip because he didn't want to disappoint his fans and crew. My heart goes out to his family. Thank you Tom for the many years of joy and happiness you brought us.
So sad the the band and others couldn't convince him to take a break. I assume that they saw the risk of him taking pain meds in order to perform with a cracked hip. Sad. :(
What's more sad is that he'd still be here today probably if he would have gotten the hip surgery. But, as was said, he didn't want to disappoint fans or his band members. He needed to be like old willie and just sit in a chair and sing and play guitar
All he needed was a hip replacement.

I to suffer with some these injuries, and did the pain meds but quit. Its called live with it.

His voice is so calming. I love Tom. I saw him in 2014. I really got into his music then as I was going through some personal struggles. ( I was a kid in the 80s so I didn't appreciate him back then ) . Just 3 years later after my first Petty concert, my bf told me he died. I got so sad like as if a family member passed. Over 4 yrs and I'm still crying over Tom 💔 I feel a little guilty having seen him in Berkeley about a week before he died. He didn't have to go out on tour. I really wish he had gotten that hip replacement and stayed home, not felt so obligated to everyone. 💔 But that's how he rolled.
I cannot imagine how this man suffered. How he survived as long as he did with such injuries, and coped is a testament to his strength and will. Love him. RIP Tommy Petty. Will never ever forget you

I'm all for romanticizing the departed but there's nothing romantic about drug dependency. That tour wouldn't have happened without the painkillers.
Er, how is becoming addicted to heroin to deal with your divorce any kind of strength. It's the opposite, and only possible when you've hot more money than sense.
I had both hips go out at the same time and the pain and hell of that sneaks up on you slow at first than at break neck speed. The day to day things like putting on socks to standing up and walking went from just bearable to constant pain and agony and that lasted three years. I finally said yes to two new hips and the only regret I had was not saying yes much sooner. If you need new hips get them. There's not much to it now a days. It's a new lease on life you'll never regret.
Such a tremendous loss in the world of music. Every time I hear one of his songs now, I get a little ‘pang’ of sadness when I realize he is actually gone. RIP, Tom. You are gone way too soon, but your music will live on forever! 😢💔🙏🏻

So sad. As a Brit, I was a late fan of Tom's - I fell in love with him when he played with the Travelling Wilburys, a band of internationally acclaimed musicians who had already left their mark on the world of rock so had nothing left to prove. They were such a fun, relaxed and mega-talented band. And Tom had the loveliest smile. I seem to remember reading that the legacy of a horrible childhood left him vulnerable to low self-esteem, hence the extreme drug use. I think Tom's parents have a lot to answer for actually.
Tom Petty was like a father figure to me. His music is all I had at times and he kept me company when I was alone. He is a LEGEND. Got to see him perform on May 25, 1994 and I'll never forget it

It broke my heart when I heard the news that Tom had died. And I hate that it was such a tragic death that I've lost too many friends to already. I never met him but having listened to his music so long it feels like I lost another friend. If you're in pain and you're taking that shit to cope please be careful, it's too easy to go push it too far, and nobody wants that.

@@jnagarya519 I had a friend who got messed up with oxy 20 years ago. I saw what was happening and tried to talk to him. He was wasted, he laughed and said it was God. I knew then it was too late. Within 5 years his wife Oded and then him. Later the guy who got them hooked. There's been more but those two are the ones that really hurt me. They had so much going for them and lost it all.

I caught the Mountain Jam tour in New York that May. He headlined it. Gotta say I gasped when he came out. You could tell he was in pain and highly medicated. Gave a great shoe though. Miss him much.

Saw him in Napa at Bottle Rock Festival in May of that last tour. A few short months later he was gone.
He's from my hometown, that I still live in. I graduated from the same High School, Gainesville High. His memory is everywhere in this town...Even University of Florida...the fans sing his songs during the games. He's a Legend...RIP TP❣

I had the unexpected pleasure of a surprise meeting with Tom Petty and his band during a meal break backstage. They couldn't have been more kind, thoughtful and decent people. I grew up listening to Tom and the Heartbreakers, and each album seems to remind me of different times in my life. He is greatly missed by fans everywhere.
What a shock. I didn't know and I attended one of his last shows. His body seemed stiff, but he accomplished his goal -the audience was ecstatic. It was an incredible show. So many hits! The crowd on their feet, dancing the entire time. My first record ever was Tom Petty. I played the B side Fooled Again again and again. I am saddened to learn he felt compelled to go on. He must not have beleive this would be his last tour, but to Tom: I thank you for the treasured memories.
It's been a rough few years we lost some rock icons. What's really sad is there not being replaced no one has that talent

The music that is being promoted in media these days is by less talented people that get by on their image. There still are a lot of really talented artists all around, but you need to look elsewhere to find the good stuff.
He went on tour "as is" because he had all these fans paying huge amounts of money to see him on stage and didn't want to disappoint them all since he didn't know how much time he had left. That's one hell of a commitment!

It's respectable but in hindsight I really wish he would have slotted the tour and got the help he needed. It's been almost 5 years and I still miss him.

The man was the soundtrack to my life growing up. He was tremendously badass.
Saw him on his final tour on May 17th, 2017, at the University of Illinois in Champaign Illinois. I am SO glad I did! I was completely shocked when I heard of his death. I was driving home from work and had to pull off the road to compose myself. God bless him!
Was fortunate enough to catch a show of his at the Hollywood Bowl. A night to remember. Petty stayed true to rock-n-roll in a time when other genres were pushing ahead. He kept it cool -- he kept it real.
My band covers a lot of his songs. I never cared for his music as a young rocker, but once I started to play his songs I realized what a wonderful songwriter he was and I love playing his music

That's such a sad story! His music was superlative. I've been listening to him for more than 35 years and his music never gets old. God bless his soul. God bless and comfort his family. I pray he's at peace.
In 2010 my physician put me on pain killers for arthritis I literally had hundreds per month. I used till 2019, and finally managed with the grace of God to take myself off the meds. I didn't realize how dangerous painkillers are till I started hearing about people over dosing. My doctor never said a word.

I too was addicted to pain killers for back pain. My doctor decided one day that he wasn't going to prescribe me anymore. Well...I managed to quit but trust me it was Not easy. RIP Tom Petty your music makes me happy and upbeat.
Yes they are. I've had a 5 abdominal surgeries between 2009-2014. I needed the pain meds and glad for morphine. But even tho you need it it's like it sucks you in. At first I hated the effects of like hit flash and sweating and my skin would itch. But learned to like it . I was riding the edge of addiction. Last time I had them was 2018. I asked to be taken off them and we tried gabapentin which works ok, not as good as the Percocet but not half wasted all day.
What worries me now is they have refused pain meds when people need them. Ya my arm is broke in 3 places and a cracked skull and the doc gives you Tylenol. 😒
Big pharma gets the doctor to push these dangerous drugs :(

So grateful for this info release. When someone dies of an OD it’s multilayered however the person is vilified. Most people are horrified and don’t want to talk about it. He was a beautiful, hard working artist who found his way to cope with pain. I’m sure he tried very hard . RIP

He was a very strong man. There's no way I'd be able to do what he did. He did a full concert in excruciating pain. I just don't know how he did that even with the pain medication. IT was very SAD when he died. He was an amazing performer. Rest In Peace TOM PETTY.❤️✝️.
You would be surprised at what oxycontin can do, you can be in agony and it would take that away and make you feel like a million bucks but you build a tolerance up to it really quick and then you find yourself doing 2-3 even 4 times as much . Just saying

It's really sad that his judgement was probably clouded by pain and pills. He will never be forgotten but the circumstances of his death are sure heartbreaking, literally, for his family and fans. RIP.

I would say Tom Petty is one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived. He had a huge volume of work with very few weak songs. It is a shame that in his efforts not to disappoint his fans, he gave them the ultimate disappointment, which is never seeing him on stage again, or putting out more music.
I'm grateful that I got to see him twice in concert and that I will be enjoying his music until it's time for me to cross over.
I wouldn't call it disappointment. Artists always give back to the people who made their success possible. Tom was no different. But, you put the fans ahead of his family and the closest friends Tom ever had, The Heartbreakers and I find that disappointing. The reason this was the last tour was because of his devotion to his family. Part of that family were, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, Ron Blair, Howie Epstein, Scott Thurston and Steve Ferrone.
I think grief stricken is how we fans are, not disappointed. I find it very sad to watch the very last performance at the Hollywood Bowl and see how he could barely walk across the stage. To know how much he suffered just so he could deliver one last time brings tears to my eyes. I don't believe Tom had any idea of the risk and danger he was in because it wasn't anything that happened from addiction or drug abuse. He simply was trying to mask the pain.
I will always stand by my opinion that the two greatest American Rock Bands ever were, The Eagles and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
I was lucky to work with both several times as a Stagehand and Production Manager. Tom Petty and Joe Walsh are the two coolest rockers and absolutely great people. Tom has left an incredible body of work for sure but, he has also left an emptiness inside of me that will never again be filled.
Rather than dwell on exploitative videos like this one, I would rather remember Tom as we all knew him, one of the greatest live performers to ever grace a stage. RIP

@@craigjgomez I'd disagree with the beetles being the greatest.... They only spanned their period, and their evolution left current fans of the time period disappointed. Lennon largely struggled on his own as did Paul for a period of time. The beetles stayed big, sure, but the death of Lennon did wonders for modern popularity. Meanwhile an artist like Petty managed to reinvent and evolve himself to either remain relevant or regain peak relevance with new fans in a way the beetles never did, while remaining relevant and not alienating his core fan base. When I was in high school, you had your share of beetles fans still, but far more so, you had people jamming to Mary Jane's last dance and you don't know how it feels. Very few artists were able to continue making music and be relevant at the level Petty was through his whole career, even if they had more total sales of their biggest albums.

I so miss the man. I can't believe it has been so long. I cannot even tell you how many times I have seen him live. From the Orange Show in OC, to Pacific Amphitheatre, to I even think Devore. He never disappointed. I'm pretty sure we never saw him at Universal Amphitheatre. But it must have been at least 10 times at different venues around S. Cal.
Just days before he died I had just finished reading his biography,thank you Tom for that great music that got me through trying times . May you rest in peace.

I was lucky to see Tom in 1977. Houston. It stands out as one of the more memorable shows I saw, and I saw a lot of them. When I heard Tom died, I was honestly saddened by the news. @@rheuss1 he needed to go to the hospital straight from his last show. No one likes the hospital, I’m a nurse, and if he did go, have a hip replacement we all would have him today. We saw him at his last concert, we had the privilege of seeing him 4 times, I thought we would see him 4 more. He was a millionaire, he could have had surgery, stayed a few days ,then go home with PT, nurses, anything one could have in a hospital. I could just see him now, 3-4 days after surgery, sitting up in a hospital bed, strumming his guitar. He’s up there with the best. ✌🏻💜
@@franditri7185 being an rn you might appreciate this; when my now x husband was 35 he had a heart attack. I was a medic at the time and saw it clearly but no one else did. He fought me to not call ems and than fell to the ground. I gave him aspirin and called ems; he almost went unconscious and i had him set up for cpr. By the time ems got there his vitals were better and he convinced them it was just anxiety and they were about to leave when i had a fit and threatened to call thier chief if they did not take him to the er that i worked at which was also the closest. So they did take him but did not follow protocol on the way there and i was so mad. In the er the doctor who i knew said ok, lets just take some blood work to calm her down (me). He came back twenty minutes later and said; you are in the middle of an mi (heart attack). He was there for 3 days. I was allowed in the cath lab because i had done procedures with this particular doctor before. He had two stents put in; 98% blockages in two arteries and one was widow maker. He even tried to leave the hospital and i had to stay until 5am until the doctor showed up and he heard it from him. He wanted to leave because he was going to miss a fishing tournament. Doctor said i saved his life. It is not so easy to get someone, usually men to go to the hospital. I tell everyone about this so they understand that younger people can indeed have heart attacks. I think in Tom Petty's case the pain medication gave him a false sense of security; masking the pain. He is truly missed.
Sad to learn about this...what a great man and musician. Grateful to have friends who were close with him and to have seen him live....he is still inspiring us from the cosmos!

My husband and I still listen to his SeriusXM show, I loved the Heartbreakers, Traveling Wilbery’s. I love Mary Jane & of course Free Falling. Was so sad when he died in 2017, I completely understand his determination to finish his final tour. I too have been dealing with debilitating chronic hip pain, knees, neck, etc., from work injuries & I was a work addict until my wheels finally fell off…
I do suffer from excruciating hip pain knee pain and neck pain and have had four back surgeries that cared for my husband until I had to take him off life support and now I’m caring for my elderly father and there really isn’t time to go and have surgery because he would care for me but that’s all right I can just imagine what Tom must’ve gone through and totally understand he was a legend
I loved Tom Petty from the first time I heard him. Such energy. His passing left such a gaping void. I am saddened to hear of how he suffered.
It figures Tom wouldn't quit, even for his own health. The man loved his fans like they were family and his sense of loyalty and dedication led him to great heights, despite the immense physical suffering. Thanks for loving your fans back, Tom. RIP
Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. Tom was known for his stubborn streak and he was also an artist who really appreciated that people who were fans/admirers of an artist were an important part of that artists success. If no one likes or appreciates your talent it's hard to have a career. But...as the Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone said "not one member of the band or the would have minded if Tom had taken care of his health issues instead of doing what turned out to be the last tour." As a fan of Tom and the Heartbreakers I'm sure that the fans feel the same. We miss Tom's presence and are deeply saddened that he left us way too soon.

I cried when I heard the news of his passing. Grew up on his music.🎶
I loved his music since 1976 when I was a kid. “Breakdown” was killer. My favorite was “I Need to Know!” I saw him in 1979 as a 12 year old. I remember I called my Mom on a pay phone in the Portland Paramount theater to tell her I was all right and how the show was. From the lobby where the phone was I heard the beginning chords of “I Need to Know,” and I said “Mom, I gotta go, they’re playing my favorite song!!!”
Also of note The Fabulous Poodles opened for the show. A cool band from the late ‘70s!
Such a cool, authentic memory! Your mom was pretty hip to let you go to the show at that age.
That's how parents raised their kids back then. If you were back home by ten and had a pulse, all was fine! I should know, I was one of those kids.
Leaving the show to make a call from a payphone was ... an unusual choice. But "Breakdown" is indeed an amazing number.

I had hip replacement surgery and was prescribed oxycodone. I still have half a bottle left. You have to be really careful with that stuff. Totally not worth getting addicted to. I’m really sorry for Mr. Petty. I can’t imagine the pain he was going through trying to do those tours.
My husband & I saw Tom Petty on that last tour just a few stops before the end in Seattle, WA. What an AMAZING experience it was, a total bucket list check off but I would have gladly waited too. Sigh. I miss him so much, what a beautiful soul gone way too soon. May you rest, sweet Tom. It's time to move on, it's time to get goin' ...

Excellant...Kudos to his family for being open and to the point about addiction and not trying to cover it up. Great job...now more people need to heed the message.
I always loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I saw them play in Hartford, Ct. in the late 80's The suprising thing was the Civic Center was only 2/3 capacity. The Radio stations gave their listeners hell for not filling the place up and rightly so. I'm not a crowd person so it took some convincing to get me to go. My sister bought me a ticket for my Birthday. Tom and the band did not disappoint! As far as drug use goes, we all have our demons. Tom petty put his fans first and, in retrospect, that was the cause of his demise. His music will last forever! Thanks for all that great music, Tom and Company!

It’s true. I’ve been on OxyContin for 16 years. Failed back surgery syndrome.

I hate hearing about people overdosing accidentally...it’s getting harder for people that actually need their medicine to even get it:(
I had a script for OxyContin and oxcodone, still had 5 refills on each (30 per month) I refused them both. I thought the pharmacy was going to have kittens! Still refused them. When your in pain you’ll do damn near anything to make it stop! Im down to gabapentin and still take it. It’s been two years and many surgeries, I feel for anyone going through the pain. I personally can’t handle being a numbskull, literally. It so easy to fall into the trap, it does feel good (and fun). I was sure I’d fall and do more damage. We’ve lost so many great souls to pain killers from no fault of their own. Keep the faith! ♥️

I have a friend that worked for Tom as a sound engineer. He said Tom was a great guy to work for.
I still grieve my favorite singer. I was fortunate to see him live. Gone way to soon. I have been listening to his CD for over a year every day. Still listening.

Last few years have been rough on my childhood memories, Petty, Van Halen and others passing. So many great songs though, still listen to him to this day.

Tom Petty’s wife’s brother was my sister’s boyfriend in college at MSU. They were a really great family, very sad as well that Tom Petty died before his time. What a talented guy.
