In this WWII era thriller, a man just released from prison decides to enter the tire-stealing-for-resell racket, now that the government has clamped down on the sale of tires.
Love these old black& white movies. Thank you for offering them to us. I have watched movies that I have never seen before. These old classics are wonderful. Seen actors that only worked in the 30's. Just great. Love the costumes. They all looked like they stepped out of a magazine spread. Oh, nostalgia. Oh, by the way I am 70 and it brings back the good old days of Cinema. Takes you back.🤔
My first job after high school.(late 1960s) was with a car dealership. The used car manager would routinely put regrooved (not retread) tires on older used cars.
Fun to see a forgotten fact of WW2, the saga of the "search for good tires" everyone dealt with back then. Of course, then was now if you lived thru it and it was no joke. Tires worth more than the car. Wow! Good chance you would have them stolen at night at that price. Fun to see all the old cars. In one scene, a beautiful old 'Woodie' station wagon can be seen foe a couple of hundred dollars. That's a $50,000.00 car now. What crumbs some crooks were to try and get rich while other men sacrificed their very lives for freedom and patriotism. Thanks for the download. Very interesting.
Having PTSD flashbacks of time spent in Akron, OH, and Les Schwab waiting rooms. Noxious. Great panoramas of old cars. Refreshing racket subject; prohibition, drugs, furs, jewels, banks, warehouse heists... timeworn. If I were a gang member, I would want Ricardo Cortez as my boss. Loved him in 1931 "Maltese Falcon." Best Sam Spade.
I love his work too but Bogart was far and away the best!
People back then started a sentence with the word"Say" Now they start a sentence with the word "So"
This was better than I had expected. The racial/ethnic aspect seems pretty advanced for the time. Then there is the good old fight.
This movie is captivating on multiple fronts.
These classic movies always have great fight scenes and they do without making a bunch of noise and swearing!

Love the snappy hep cat dialogue from all the cast through out the entire movie. I kept thinking I need to write the chatter down, such great slang. Great seeing Rochelle Hudson and Bill Henry. Both had such long careers although Bill's last 10 years were mostly uncredited performances. Alan Hale was so tall in this film and such a baby face.
